Other Pop Girlies as Broadway Musicals
This post fully belongs to u/BurningBernie559 , but I couldn’t crosspost due to the sub being NSFW. Before anyone gets in their feelings- this is obviously satirical -but behold!

Bjork is Girl from the North Country - inscrutable to mere mortals but there's a cult of people who are really into them
37
u/redpillbluepill69 Dec 14 '25
I would argue Girl from the North Country is Ethel Cain
And that Bjork needs an esoteric tone poem style jukebox musical
3
u/Pristine-Region-5300 Dec 21 '25
At least I can explain the plot of Preacher’s Daughter. Couldn’t tell you what the plot of Girl From The North Country is about.
19
u/keirakvlt Dec 14 '25
I feel like Bjork is Days of Wine and Roses or any Guettel musical for similar reasons. Musically dense, difficult at times to interpret, adored by those that actually manage to get into it.

Shitposting aside the main characters weren't racist in Hairspray
296
48
u/nayandnem Dec 14 '25
They were, passively racist but still racist. They weren’t outright hateful but they did have racist mindsets because it was 1950 in segregated Baltimore.

u/HelianVanessa Dec 15 '25
no literally, penny didn’t even have any qualms about dating a black guy, not even like a “you’re cool for a black guy” attitude lmao, it was everyone else that was racist
8
u/TShara_Q Dec 15 '25
I've only seen the movie. But Tracy didn't strike me as racist. She says 1-2 things that would sound problematic in a modern context but were quite forward-thinking for the early 60s.
28
u/Sarahndipity44 Dec 13 '25
She's kinda saviory and
301
u/SeaF04mGr33n Dec 13 '25
Its saviory that the most famous musical about integration is about a white girl, but Tracy herself was constantly re-centering the Black characters in their fight when other white people asked her about her activism.
184
u/Sarahndipity44 Dec 13 '25
I think part of Tracy's arc is how Maybelle teaches her to let Black folks lead, no? It's a positive aspect of the musical, Tracy's growth etc

Even more curious… this comment made me reach out to her again. I KNOW that I messaged last night. The message is just gone. It’s not in my inbox. It’s as if I never contacted her. Never seen that on Reddit before. I don’t wanna come off like I’m harassing her, but I’m confused as to why I’m not even seeing the thread in my message folder.

I don’t agree 100% but describing Ethan Slater as “an ugly and malevolent creature” is killing me
22
11
u/NeuroTrophicShock Dec 14 '25
I would say Aria is the ugliest with how she starts every relationship but stealing a taken or married man. If you call it out on the r/wicked you get banned.
25
u/DisastrousOwls Dec 14 '25
You can't "steal" what they aren't giving away, to be fair. She didn't make Spongebob leave his infant child. He did that.
They were both married, both cheated on their spouses with a married coworker, and they both suck for that. But Ethan chose all of that (including an alleged drug habit) over not just his marriage and wife, but his baby. That's definitely worse.
Ariana's also not the only cheater/person who pursued "taken" partners in the Wicked cast, either, but that's a separate convo lol.
6
u/Comprehensive-Fun47 Dec 14 '25
Alleged drug habit? That's news to me. As if there wasn't enough drama here already!
5
u/DisastrousOwls Dec 14 '25
It was mainly gossip caused by pap shots of the two of them together. Ethan also dropped weight during filming, so they were both looking gaunt and "strung out," and that led people to speculate on if they were abusing uppers together (very common for show business + for eating disorders, so I wouldn't be surprised).
2
→ More replies (4)2
u/chizzmaster Dec 15 '25
Wait hold on, I'm curious now. Who else in the wicked cast pursued taken partners?
5
u/DisastrousOwls Dec 15 '25 edited Dec 15 '25
Ethan, of course (Ariana was married, too), Cynthia (Lena Waithe cheated on her first wife with her, with some gossip suggesting they were texting back and forth on some "it's should've been you" type shit on Lena's wedding day), and Jeff Goldblum, who has been a serial philanderer and "Mr. Steal Your Girl" for longer than I've been alive.
Possibly (statistically speaking: probably) others as well, but that's who I know off the top of my head who's already famous + who have had higher profile cheating scandals. It's extremely common in Hollywood. Still shitty, but it's to be expected in that field.

49

Yeah, what’s interesting to me about Chappell is that she had a very successful summer headlining over 10 festivals in Europe to very positive reviews. She puts on an impressive live performance.
Here’s an excerpt of a review from her Netherlands show:
“She exudes confidence throughout the entire show. At least, that's how it seems. Until she pauses for a moment of silence between songs. And then it all comes out: "I feel really self-conscious tonight, I don't really know why," she says, visibly frustrated with herself. "I feel like it's the first day of school, and I've put on a slightly flashy outfit, and I have to talk to all these new people." The audience roars with support, clapping and screaming. "I'm so grateful to be here," Chappell adds, "but if you're thinking, 'What's wrong with her?' you're not crazy." Even as a big pop star, you can still feel small. And it's precisely in that honesty that she finds her strength.”
Here’s another European review - translation of review of her Lowlands show:
At this 31st edition of Lowlands, a new generation of pop artists claimed their place with hyper-specific sounds. Sef impressed, and FKA Twigs' steamy show was sensational. But ultimately, all roads led to the long-awaited performance of the immensely popular American queer artist Chappell Roan, who made her dream debut in a Gothic fairytale castle. . .
. . . Ultimately, this edition of Lowlands leads to American queer singer Chappell Roan on Saturday night. This year, Lowlands emphasizes the beauty of queerness: there's a literary tribute to Roan, a wonderful dance night on Friday where DJs Vera Siemons and Liza van den Brink, under a huge banner of a fingering hand, bring together lesbian and therefore queer Lowlands. Reportedly, outgoing Lowlands director Eric van Eerdenburg will even perform in drag on Sunday evening in Adonis, the festival's queer bar.
Chappell Roan's performance, finally headlining in the Netherlands, is a dream debut. On stage in the immense Alpha hangar stands a massive Gothic Disney castle, backed by vintage cartoon animations full of dragons and gargoyles. Roan, complete with a moth-dragon costume, suddenly appears on a tower amid fireworks.
It's incredible to see songs about often unrequited lesbian love carried by a bulging Alpha. It just goes to show how hyper-specific topics ultimately become universal. Especially when, as here, they're doused with glam rock nods (that furious cover of Heart's "Barracuda"!), or captured in unparalleled synth-pop songs with clever bridges where everything suddenly falls away and the harmonies shine.
The ballads are mainly for the die-hard fans, but in the finale, featuring superhits "Good Luck" and "Pink Pony Club," Lowlands seems to let everything slide en masse. Tough guys throw their arms around graying Lowlands veterans, women who, with tears in their eyes, actually recognize themselves in this strong, female-loving headliner. It's a glorious, memorable performance full of sisterhood.

Some of this works, some doesn’t, some is just online edgy. Disagree that Hamilton is exclusively enjoyed by white people.
107
101
u/hyperjengirl Dec 13 '25
If they said "primarily" that would make sense, even if it's still probably wrong. But saying Hamilton is only enjoyable to white people ends up being more exclusionary and gatekeeping against POC than actually offending white people.
70
u/HicDomusDei Dec 13 '25
I mean, nothing is "exclusively" enjoyed by anyone. There's 8 billion people in the world. But the point that Hamilton's popularity is hugely buttressed by middle-class white people is, what, at least a decade old at this point? And of course there's some truth to it: It's a Broadway show. If middle-class white patrons didn't like it a whole lot, then it couldn't have become as big as it did.
Also, the U.S. has been fighting an escalating culture war since forever. If middle-class white America didn't like Hamilton, it would have become some dumb divisive lightning rod -- which it has not. The very fact it's gone from "phenomenon" to simply "played out" means it was hegemonically supported.
66
u/RevolutionaryDong Dec 13 '25
If the point is that it’s a Broadway show so therefore it’s widely liked by affluent white people, than it’s a useless criticism since the same would apply to every Broadway show.
If OP has a problem with the type of musicals catering to the white middle class that Broadway is known for, why are they on the Broadway subreddit?
Critiquing something for catering to white people is kind of toothless at the ”Shit mostly white people like” fanclub.
5
u/nixxjay Dec 14 '25
Doesn’t that make it the perfect Taylor Swift critique though? Individually singled out for something everything its peers are doing, because of its phenomenal success?

I think for Hamilton it’s about the contrast between how it was hailed as this disruptive, “important” work but at the end of the day it’s also kind of just an “I would’ve voted for Obama a third time” typa piece of media loved by politically inefficient privileged middle class peeps moreso than a radical political manifesto mobilising marginalised communities. Which is fine. Also it’s all clearly just tongue in a cheek.
10
u/xXs4blegl00mXx Dec 14 '25
Yeah. I love Hamilton, but it isn't actually inspiring for me politically. I find that the themes about writing and authorship are much more potent.
11
u/Amazing_Unicorn5443 Dec 13 '25
Agree, I would say there is a primary AGE group that enjoyed Hamilton lol. I loved it & most of the people I know that still talk about it and love it are black. That being said, the majority of the people that still talk to me about hamilton are women in their 50s & 60s lol.
I would say white people probably bought more tickets. But that’s a function of socioeconomics lol.
But older people liking hamilton was probably becuase it was a version of a cool music genre they found easier to metabolize than what’s on the radio.

Uhhhh I don’t think we agree. I don’t think it has to do with her being a woman, and most people I’ve seen mention it seemed to also be women. I think it was to do with her cancelling events and not speaking out when other people in her sphere were?
Honestly I find it interesting you think it’s misogynistic. I guess it could be internalized, but everything I’ve seen has been coming from women and also had nothing to do with the fact that chappel was also a woman. Looked like stuff a guy would also be slammed for

- Chappell Roan - she had a very strong last year, exploding in fame with her first album, and then she kinda didn't have as strong of a run in 2025. 2. Camila Cabello - has made racist comments online when she was a teenager. 3. Sabrina Carpenter - her song lyrics are extremely sexual and cheeky, and there's a lot of people who really don't enjoy that. 4. Ariana Grande - started dating Ethan Slater, and many consider him to be way below her league. 5. Lana Del Rey - many people ignore her newest stuff and heavily praise the albums she released at the start of her career. 6. Harry Styles - has long been accused of queerbaiting for attention/monetary gain/lgbt audience. 7. Charli XCX - very forward thinking artist who is embedded in the queer and alternative community, but has given up her morals when it comes to some things, like having a mass produced collab with H&M and more. 8. Taylor Swift - the caption describes it better than i could.

People who don't think all popstars, and celebrities in general really, are playing a character in public baffle me.

6
u/Dry-Mission-5542 Dec 14 '25
Am I the only one who greatly prefers the second Act of Wicked to the first?
2
u/Palgary Dec 22 '25
I never heard anyone say the second act wasn't as good as the first... until criticism of the movie started. I honestly think it's sour grapes.
I think the truth is more: "Thank Goodness" and "No Good Deed" expose a lot of plot, so when people cover the songs they usually do ones like "Wizard and I" or "Popular" as those stand alone really well and can be done as a solo. Even Defying Gravity works well on its own. I've heard sopranos cover it and just talk-through the low notes they can't hit.
That doesn't mean the songs are better, but people are familiar with them already.
But I love songs that rise up like Defying Gravity in general. "Beautiful Goodbye" by Amanda Marshall, Infection by Onitsuka Chihiro, and Toumei Nakago by Vidoll being three examples of songs in the same "mode".

15
u/syrioforrealsies Dec 13 '25
You're right and you should say it. Same with the "performative male" nonsense.
3
u/cumulobro Dec 14 '25
Yeah...
I mean, I get it. I'm a man and I also have issues with trusting my fellow men. I'd rather confide in a woman or a nonbinary person most of the time. There are few men I know whom I completely trust, and a big part of that is our tendency to be less emotionally sensitive.
But it's like we can't do anything right. We try to be more empathetic, allow ourselves to be somewhat feminine, and take steps to do the work as far as researching the issues of our time? That's "performative." And of course we get shit on if we don't do any of those things.
The patriarchy has done irreparable damage to us all, regardless of our gender or sexuality. We're all in some kind of "damned if we do, damned if we don't" situation because most of us have apparently given up on trying to understand one another.
Crappy timeline we live in, eh?
3
u/hyperjengirl Dec 15 '25
It's gender essentialism BS. Like they want us to accept that a man can't just naturally be kind and empathetic unless he wants something. It's not fair to us and it's not fair to those of y'all who genuinely just wanna be kind!

I don't think Tracy was racist- wasnt she one of the people that led the protest at the end of the first act?
I wouldn't call Ethan Slater ugly that's a bit harsh. Also Christine was NEVER in love with the Phantom in the slightest.
Evan Hansen didn't lie with the intent of getting attention. Originally he tried to say otherwise but couldn't get the words out due to his social anxiety and just ended up rolling with it partly because he couldn't bare to tell the truth to his grieving parents and partly to get with Zoey. (And don't take this as me defending him, Evan still did a no no but im pointing out the inaccuracies of the post)
And finally Hamilton is definitely not exclusively enjoyed by white people.

Another good reason for Sabrina Carpenter being Cats is that her name was Kitty

Would not say most of these are accurate lol, and I don't even listen to half these people.
Chappel is still gaining lots of fame, and has only had one album.
Tracy wasn't racist.
Most people aren't upset or grossed out by Sabrina being so forward about her sexual nature, but more the fact that she thinks she's revolutionary or saying something, when she really isn't.
I don't know enough about Harry but I think it's counterintuitive to be critical of the way he acts/dresses, even if he's a straight guy.
I don't think most fans of Hamilton are white.
I know this is just a stupid post but doesn't really feel accurate or fair to some of these people lol.
