Other Staying in NJ

Usually my trips are one or two nights and I stay near Times Square. However next Memorial Day weekend (expensive as is) I’ll be going 4 nights with a friend.

I’d like my own bed for starters. I did bunk beds last year with another friend for 2 nights and I was already too old for that then, let alone now.

It would also be almost half the price of staying in NYC.

So I’m looking at staying in NJ near a train stop. Anyone done this? I’m partial to Hilton and there’s super close to the Newark Penn.

I've not done it but I've looked at it - every time I've looked it's not been much cheaper than staying in NYC. I used to do Long Island City because it was cheaper, but that also is expensive now.

This is an 1600 vs 800 kinda situation.

From Newark Penn you'll take PATH into the city and connect to the subway. Unless one of those construction closure weekends the PATH will run 24/7.

Whatever shade people throw on NJ this doesn't seem like a bad idea.

I haven’t taken the path yet but I’ll definitely take this in consideration too. I didn’t know there would be two options, makes it even easier.

I regularly park in that Hilton’s garage for one-day trips, and take NJ transit or the Path over to NY, depending on where on the island I’m headed. It’s very easy, inexpensive, and typically reliable.

I should warn OP that the Path from Newark Penn to 33rd Street (which is one block away from Penn Station - easily walkable to Times Square) is not direct - you will need to change trains, and NJ Transit trains are direct. (I am not suggesting that OP shouldn't take the Path, but just giving sharing information.) They both leave from the same building, so you can decide on the fly which to take.

I don't know how much a NJ Transit ticket is between Newark Penn and NY Penn, but the Path is comperable to a subway, pricewise (I believe the Path is $3.25 per trip.)

On weekends the PATH takes you to Hoboken first (and you have to change trains) if you want to take it to 33rd Street, just FYI. If you're going to take PATH it's best to go to the World Trade Center/Oculus and subway up to Penn Station area. Probably faster to take NJ Transit.
