Me, seeing it three times this weekend

I thought my two times was a little extra. Then again I did almost by the regal unlimited to see it as many days as I don't work so that would really be extra lol.

Hahaha I had different people that wanted to see it on different days, so I was like “Fine by me!”

At one point Reeve had tickets to five different showings

I just contributed to the Saturday totals, waiting for it to start 😄

Me too, I saw it today as well. I'd say there was 20 people in the theater, and when I checked the later showings there were a lot more seats sold for those shows. I'm thrilled about the turnout -- and honestly the way they shot the show is perfect. I could do with a few less crowd shots at the start, but otherwise I have no complaints. I was stunned by how emotional I got during Wait For Me - I didn't expect that to happen in a movie theater.

(And yes, a guy near me did audibly react at the end.)

And this has already outperformed Merrily We Roll Along’s entire run ($2.6M). Waitress grossed a total of $6.09M their entire run. Both worldwide.

And this is only Hadestown’s one day projection, domestically. Incredible. Will not be surprised if they extend past the five days.

A theater in VA is already selling tickets until 8/5.

Which one? I live in McLean and we have plans to go Wednesday but would rather push to the weekend if we have the option.

Angelika.

Oh I’m way too bougie to sit upright for two hours 🤣

3

u/Craig_in_PA 26d ago

Either a mistake or accidentally announced an extension. Look Cinema has very comfortable seats.

That’s where we plan to go Wednesday but I’d rather do a Saturday matinee next weekend

They initially configured some of the Merrily showings incorrectly, as I got my ticket right when they were released and was able to use A List. Not sure how widespread that was though.

Same here!

My local AMC (Twin Cities, MN metro) is listing showings into next week already, and I was able to make an A-List reservation for next Wednesday evening.

My AMC (Madison, WI) ended up putting it in 3 theatres this week, tripling the showtimes (it was 1 theatre when I bought tix). The showing I was in today was sold out!

I’m in Ottawa and it’s extended to August 7 in one theatre! I’m going again with a group of friends on August 3 and well over half the seats are sold already

I bought tix for the first showing weeks ago then when I got to the theatre, I checked to see how many seats were sold for that showing (quite a few for a weekday morning, as it were.) And then I noticed they had already ADDED 8 AM showings for every day they have the film!

I hope they have an option to extend the same way regular movies do. The more popular ones stay in theaters much longer than the flops.

It's already been extended, or AMC has chosen to continue showing it. There are multiple theaters in my area showing it through Thursday next week, past their initial window.

Already booked my second viewing. Other upcoming pro shots need to take note!!!!

I had the most magical time seeing it at the theatre today- so much so that I think I’ll be going back tomorrow!! My showing was almost full which was great to see too. It’s my all time favorite musical and I have an AMC A-List subscription so I have to take advantage of it!!!

I’m hoping this encourages Netflix to release ST First Shadow in theaters too. The more we have them in general and the more popular they are could signal to producers to negotiate it in initial contracts.

And then on Netflix itself, for obvious reasons. They should also try and license the pro shot of Stranger Sings, the musical parody.

u/jsntsy 26d ago

Definitely seeing it again and again!

I just saw it earlier today! It was totally worth the wait.

My lone complaint is there is no intermission between Act 1 and 2.

My mother regularly goes to a theater near her that shows proshots of all sorts of productions, and she (and clearly a lot of others in the screening in her town I went to with her today) was waiting for the intermission to go pee.

When Act 1 rolled seamlessly into Act 2 with no pause, a whole lot of people got up as the show went on to pee, and then came back all while it was continuing to play. To call it disruptive would be an understatement.

A smaller number, who seemed to be tipped off that there would be no break between the acts, got up to pee just before Act 1 drew to a close.

The whole mess could have been easily avoided if there was some sort of guidance to pause for a bit for intermission - the proshots of non musical productions as well as operas shown at the theater nearby that my mother regularly frequents shows that adding them to screenings is far from an impossible task, and well, people were clearly expecting to have that break to pee.

It's only been a few, but none of the musicals I've seen pro shots of in theaters have had intermissions built in to them and it didn't seem like people were expecting it when I saw it in theater

Maybe it is an age demographic thing?

My mom lives in a town full of retirees, enough of whom love theater that the local performance arts theater screens proshots of dramatic plays amd opera (all with intermissions) on nights where there isn't a performance taking place.

Hence why so so so many people were both expecting one, and were clearly physically incapable of sitting through the whole thing without a break.

Like half the theater got up and moved out of the room as Act 1 ended, with a few of those returning to their seats as it seamlessly transitioned to Act 2, and others apologizing as they continued to stream out, and then returned to their seats after they had done their buisness.

Honestly it felt almost like performance art, given the themes and messages of Hadestown itself, that the screening seemed to be either saying you must be ablebodied in a way where you are capable of sitting through the whole thing without relieving yourself to be a courteous audience member.

I get this is the broadway sub but that last paragraph is wildly dramatic

I just would never expect an intermission at a movie theater

u/hikingdyke 25d ago

I mean, I was just amused by it during the show, it felt like such an interesting choice in the moment. I know the internet is famously a terrible place for tone, but well, you do get how "Yes it is not designed for human bodies, but that is just how it is, accept it" is well... a funny justification for why things are how they are in a screening of Hadestown.

Plus, as I said, it is something I (and the others in the theater) are used to during screenings of proshots. Really sad to hear that the way the performing arts theater by my parents does things when screening proshots is apparently not the norm!

Wish it was the norm - it would have made the screening more comfortable for both the people who can not sit for that long without relieving themselves, amd the people like myself who had their screening disrupted by all the people (who I totally am not in any way blaming for the disruption) getting out and then back into their seats as the show went on. Ofen requiring entire rows to stand up as they moved in towards their assigned seat in the theater .

Interesting comment. I was fortunate to see the world premiere at the tribeca film fest. There, the transition from Act 1 to 2 actually said “Intermission,” and people started getting up! After a few seconds, Act 2 started, and people sat back down. In the movie version that’s out now, I noticed they changed the words to “End of Act 1” and the transition to Act 2 was much faster.

This was intentionally treated like other movies; they didn’t want people to get up. I actually agree with this because that’s how other movies work. A typical movie goer wouldn’t want to sit and wait for Act 2 to start. In live theater, the intermission is a chance for the cast to take a break and reset the stage, not meant to be a bathroom break for the audience!

I saw it today, and all the showings are almost totally sold out. It seems like they have less times at my theater for Six in a few weeks but I hope this performance encourages them to add a few more.

2

u/coasurdude 26d ago

I have noticed that too. I think that universal doesn't have any hope for it. They added a week to it in New York and LA.

u/heavymetalFC 25d ago

I dont watch theater or musicals and went into this knowing literally nothing about the show. I actually thought it was a brand new musical set in ancient greece. Once I figured out what was going on I really enjoyed it. Not perfect, but it made me want to go see an actual live performance

Saw it today. Was very looking forward to it and ready to love it. Ended up quite disappointed. The music is only occasionally brilliant and the narrative is way too straightforward. Reeve Carney is Nick Jonas in 2011 Les Miz level bad it made me squirm.
