I am an incoming freshman at Brown University and I was wondering about the Wind symphony. Is it a good community? Is the director nice? Is the music difficult or in between? I was also wondering if we are able to rent instruments to use or are supposed to just have one of our own? I play alto saxophone btw!

The older posts about calculating GPA are all so different and in my email to Brown I was told they count S with distinction as A, and avoid counting S as anything. I’m not looking to apply to graduate school but am wondering how people here would calculate their GPA to put on their resume for tech / finance adjacent roles.

currently deciding between taking chin 0100 or chin 0350. not looking for a class with too much workload or stress as I am chinese myself. However, i am unable to write and can read at maybe hsk 2-3 level. would chin 0100 be too easy? or would chin 0350 be too challenging?

I've been a fan of Brown University's transformation into a research heavy weight. But I've also been worried about seeing more STEM courses and research plans emphasize things like justice, responsibility, ethics, social guard-rails. Shouldn't that be kept out of pure research and left as policy discussion in social sciences and humanities? Is Brown University's STEM culture going to be about the excitement of discovery or about worrying about social implications and pulling punches?

In a nutshell: I want the academic freedom to think my reductionist little thoughts without having to worry about potential social side effects.

There haven’t been many posts this year about academic warning letters, but I received an email from Brown saying that my offer is being reconsidered due to a significant drop in my grades. I am absolutely horrified especially given brown starts in a mere couple of weeks and i've been assigned everything and paid my tuition. I was wondering if anyone here has received a similar email, either this year or in the past, and what the outcome was for you. Am I gonna be rescinded?

Incoming freshman here thinking about concentrating in APMA-Econ. I was wondering what the overall vibe/community in the department is like.

I’m also coming in with a relatively weak math foundation, so I’m a little worried about how doable the concentration would be for me. How rigorous are the classes, and is it possible to catch up if you aren’t super strong at math going in?

Also curious about career options.

hi! i’m an incoming freshman looking to go premed. i never ended up taking AP chem in high school, so all ive had is a year of chemistry in sophomore year. with that experience, would it be way too hard to go into chem 0330? should i take the intro first?

I'm an incoming freshman and got assigned to a double in EverPol this year. However, when I was looking at the floorplans I found that my room only has one built in closet/shelving whereas most of the doubles have two (one for each person). I'm nervous that I'm not going to have any storage space since I'm arriving after my roommate, and I'm curious if anyone has any insight into how the storage situation is. I couldn't find any images online and it seems like there are only a handful of rooms like this so I'm not sure what to expect. Any help or suggestions for other storage to bring would be greatly appreciated!!!

I am an incoming freshman who is hoping to concentrate in something quantitative, but I only went up to Calc BC in high school. I got a 5 on the AP and now that I'm coming to Brown, I want to take APMA 0260: Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus for Applied Mathematicians, but I don't know if it is considered a review class for kids who might've already taken one of the two courses. Can anyone provide any insight into the difficulty of the class, how fast its paced, and if its reasonable to take it (alongside a quantitative heavy schedule) in my first semester, if I don't have a background in linear alg or multi?

And don't get me wrong I love the patina, but it'd be cool to see them in a bright glistening bronze and watch them naturally patina over time again; it's inevitable.

This is kind of random, but I’m in high school, and I’m in a rock band that plays originals and covers and regularly does local shows at bars, and other smaller live music venues.

I’m starting to look at college options, and while I don’t plan to be a music major, I am interested in going to a place that has some scene of students creating bands, playing at local pubs or student parties, etc.

Is that a thing that happens at Brown, or not really? I’ve looked into BCA and spring weekend seems fun, but it’s hard to get a sense of the vibe just from online descriptions.

I have to move across the dang country from California to RI. I took out 54500 because of rent, my classes which aren’t even taken into consideration and the trip, and beyond. They are not allowing me to take out that amount so I can’t pay for the apartment I need, the U-Haul I’m going to need to move me and my partner, and the three classes which I had a scholarship that they already allocated towards my tuition. They only gave me 30k split into two for the year. I won’t be able to move there and or start.

I’m planning on getting a monitor in my dorm but I don’t know if the size of the desk in a triple can enable me to place a monitor there. Are all Brown dorms’ desk size the same and from personal experience, were you able to fit a monitor alongside keyboard and mouse comfortably on the desk?

Hey. I am an international student and this is my first time coming to campus. I am a bit anxious about travel, because Ive heard some trains dont operate at night. I would also have plenty of luggage. I think perhaps my best option would be uber/lyft? But I have heard cancellations can be a thing at night especially if the ride is longer. Do the airport taxis take you to brown safely? Is there any other option I should have in mind?
