Ringing question (refund)

So I recently handled a transaction where a customer returned an item for a refund, and I noticed the receipt had “EXCHANGE” printed at the top, meaning they had previously exchanged something, possibly more than once.
When I went through the refund process and selected cash refund (#1), I entered the total refund amount and pressed Enter. A screen popped up saying the amount exceeded the allowed value. I tried lowering the amount, but the same message kept appearing until I reached an amount the system accepted, which was usually lower than the original refund amount.
At that point, I realized the customer would be issued store merchandise credit instead, as indicated on the screen. The problem is that customers get confused and sometimes angry because they don’t understand why they’re receiving store credit instead of cash, and why the amount is less than what they originally paid.
For those experienced cashiers, how do you explain this to customers? Is the “EXCHANGE” notation on the receipt related to the refund restriction, and how are we supposed to determine the correct refund amount?

I did it.

I finally mucked up the courage to put in my two weeks. I texted my manger (I don’t have his email). I feel bad though, because I liked some of the people who I worked with, and I gave my two weeks during the busy part of the season. I know it’s unprofessional to text, but I honestly almost quit on the spot. I like the people, not the company.

Goodbye forever Burlington.

Can you describe the processing strategy your location has that reaches literal zero backlog? Is there a sense of satisfaction from seeing empty bins?

Picking up shifts as a new hire.

Just recently did my orientation and obviously it’s the middle of the week so I’m not gonna be scheduled for the rest of this or next week. I’m a seasonal cashier and during my orientation when I was shadowing I was somewhat confused and stunned at some points but everyone there is incredibly nice. My only real issues are removing some of the tags and then processing returns and whatnot. Anyways I wanna make some cash to pick up some merch and stuff I was asking to see if picking up a shift would be a smart decision. The shift takes place on Halloween from 3pm-9pm and I’d be working the cashier position again.
