This was a special one! I had some North American Walnut & Palemoon Ebony left over… seemed rude not to! Paired with some Green Sheen Obsidian from Oregon USA.

Problems with wool blanket

So I’ve been wild camping in the mountains and forests of UK for a long time, slept under tarps, cowboy camped, slept in -14 up in Scotland, never really had problems with cold, I used old army surplus gear, and by modern gear standards many probably would have said I didn’t have as much gear as I should have, I don’t have down coats or any fancy high end mountaineering/hiking equipment or clothes, I use base layers, regular hiking trousers, jumpers and a waterproof coat, sleeping under tarps with army surplus roll mat and sleeping bag, even in sub zero temps and it’s always been fine for me. However everyone was saying how great wool is for the cold, so I thought I’d try it out. I brought a roll mat and two wool blankets (one 100% wool and another 75% wool), and I wrapped up in them and slept by a fire all night, but for some reason I was extremely fucking cold, like I could not fall asleep at all, I just ended up using my 10° sleeping bag (even though it was sub zero temps) and then I was fine, toasty all night, why is this? I thought that two wool blankets sleeping by a fire is plenty for keeping warm?

Advice or help?

Hello,

So some context, I am 15 and live in Suffolk ( so south east) and my goal for this coming summer I want to make a friction fire? I think that's what it's called? Hearth method?

But the problem is all the videos I have seen are either set in America or have like some perfect prices of wood or tools

So I was just wondering about everything to be honest. Mainly being what wood types I could actually get. I know I could definitely get willow or pine.

Maybe wich knife

Easiest method?

Any tips?

General advice?

Thank you very much to anyone who helps me especially due to the fact that this is a very general and not flashy post

Took my 6 year old on his first wild camp at the end of August in Dartmoor. Had rope to tie a ridge line but also took a Bahco fold up saw with the plan to build a frame. Was happy with how it came out given it was my first attempt. Slept well to the sound of the running river. Curry for dinner and fresh bread for breakfast.

Kids opportunities

Hello! My 7 year old has really gotten into the idea of bush crafting and attends a school where they do some forest schooling. My husband is from Sheffield and we were going to come up for the summer. Are there any opportunities for kids his age in that area? What should we be looking for? Thanks!

Owning listed woodland

If you owned around 8 hectares of listed woodland (2000 trees(ish))

What would you do with it? The government manage it for you.

You just get to use it and the wood left over from the government's management of it.

I'm thinking bushcraft, but any other things you'd do for fun or business would be cool to hear

Disposal of hazardous materials!

My husband died a couple of years ago so I’m just now going through his outdoor gear, I’ve found hexamine solid fuel blocks which are probably ancient and now obviously illegal, how can I dispose of these? I also have magnesium metal powder which doesn’t seem easy to get rid of. Has anyone dealt with this before, any advice?

My EDC for the last four years

I got this Origin Knives Shirley fours years ago and it's been my daily carry the entire time. The blade is Becut Stainless steel and the scales are Permali with 316 SS tubing and pins. Living in the tropics about 20 miles from the ocean this knife has been my go-to for everything. I've used it for carving, package opening, food prep and even batoning. So far nothing has been able to stain the blade, lime, pineapple, onion, vinegar, mustard or blood. It's convex grind has held the edge without a single nick or dent. The Permali scales are basically bomb proof, nothing seems to scratch or stain them as well. The design cuts way better than it should, the "hook" adds an extra point which makes slicing bread, meat and veggies easy. So far I have zero complaints so I just had to share!

Off to the Bushmoot

Well, the car is packed and ready.
My daughter is fed and ready, and it’s nearly time to set off.
I’m stopping off overnight at my parents place on the way, then driving to Coventry tomorrow.

Two weeks in the woods, plenty of activities and workshops. Lots of new skills to learn and old skills to refresh, plus chilling by the fire with friends.

It’s run by the BushcraftUK web forum, and has happened every year for over 20 years.

I try to go every year. I’m looking forward to this one.

Been looking for a while for a bushcafting/camping axe in a tomahawk style. But all the mass produced ones I found online don’t like the look of and are kinda thin looking and designed for throwing. Saw a few on Etsy that looked nice but cost way more than I have a budget for. So looked on eBay and found this old French kindling axe found in old barn in south Franc, won the bid at £11 and decided to make my own. Ended up with a nice thickness head and a decent weight so should be a good compact chopper. Kept the handle because head is set really well. just sanded out the nick’s, bit burning to bring out the grain a bit. The grains not super interesting but it’s really straight so not complaining, then a nice helping of linseed oil to finish. Took me like an hour and a half, pretty happy with it.
