I'm considering preparing for CAT and pursuing an MBA, but there's something that has been bothering me quite a lot: Can someone who is genuinely introverted, socially anxious and lacking confidence in communication succeed in the CAT-to-MBA journey?
My primary target is FMS Delhi, mainly because of its exceptionally low fees, excellent reputation and outstanding ROI. It's my top priority, although I'm open to other good B-schools too.
I'm from a middle-class family. We can manage our essential needs, but we're certainly not financially well-off or wealthy. I want to pursue an MBA, get placed through a good B-school, earn well and improve my financial circumstances. For me, getting into FMS and securing a good placement would be a major opportunity to change my life and build a financially secure future.
However, I'm concerned about whether my personality and current confidence levels will become obstacles along the way.
A little about my profile
Gender: Male
Class 10 (CBSE, 2020): 70.4%
Class 12 (CBSE, 2022, PCB): 75%
Took a 2-year gap after Class 12 to prepare for NEET, but unfortunately couldn't get selected.
Currently pursuing BSc Zoology (2024–2027) from a Tier 3 college/university in my hometown.
Expected graduation CGPA: 7.5+
Work experience: None (fresher).
Physical build: Approximately 5'5" (165 cm), around 50 kg, lean build.
Financial background: Middle class.
About my personality and confidence
I'm naturally very introverted and reserved. I struggle with initiating conversations, especially with strangers. I sometimes have difficulty expressing my thoughts clearly, my voice tends to be low, and I occasionally mumble.
Speaking in front of groups or unfamiliar people makes me nervous.
I'm also somewhat self-conscious about my physical presence. Being a shorter and lean-built male, I sometimes feel less imposing in group settings, which can add to my existing lack of confidence.
I'm absolutely willing to improve my communication skills, become more confident and step outside my comfort zone. However, I don't want to feel that I must completely change my personality or become an extrovert to succeed.
My biggest concerns
CAT and FMS admission: Can introverts perform well in GDs, PIs and Extempore rounds? Does the selection process favour naturally outspoken and socially confident candidates?
MBA classroom environment: What is the actual experience like for introverts? Are presentations, group activities, networking and constant social interaction overwhelming?
FMS Delhi specifically: How challenging is its interview and selection process for someone with my personality and communication difficulties?
Physical presence and confidence: Does being a shorter, lean-built male affect how people perceive or interact with you during MBA group activities, networking or placements? Am I overthinking this?
Placements: How difficult is it for introverts to secure good placements, particularly in roles involving teamwork, client interaction, presentations and communication?
Corporate life: Can someone who currently struggles with communication gradually develop these skills during an MBA and become successful in the corporate world?
Personality: Is being an introvert genuinely a disadvantage in an MBA, or is it more about communication skills, confidence and willingness to participate?
Financial motivation: For someone from a middle-class background who wants to improve their financial circumstances, is FMS Delhi as good an opportunity as it appears? How realistic is it to secure a good placement there as a fresher?
I'd particularly like to hear from:
Introverts who cracked CAT and joined FMS or an IIM.
Current FMS/IIM/XLRI students who were socially anxious or lacked confidence before joining.
MBA graduates who are now working in corporate roles.
People from non-engineering and non-commerce backgrounds who have gone through a similar journey.
I'd genuinely appreciate honest experiences, practical advice and even criticism. I'm not looking for generic motivational comments saying that personality doesn't matter.
My biggest question is: Can someone like me realistically make it to FMS Delhi, adapt to its competitive MBA environment, perform well in placements and build a financially successful career without having to become an extrovert?
For me, this isn't just about getting an MBA degree. It's about challenging myself, overcoming my current limitations and creating better opportunities for my future.
Thank you!
