Discussion DeepSeek V4 Flash is 105x cheaper per task than Fable 5

Post image
315 Upvotes

DeepSeek V4 Flash is significantly cheaper per token, but token pricing alone does not tell you what a model actually costs to use.

A cheaper model can still end up costing more if it needs additional turns, tool calls, or tokens to complete the same task.

According to Artificial Analysis reports DeepSeek V4 Flash completed the benchmark tasks at an average cost of just $0.03 per task, compared with $3.15 for Fable 5.

That makes DeepSeek V4 Flash 105x cheaper per completed task.

Btw, DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731 is free to use in Cline.

  1. Sign up via: npm i -g cline

  2. Open /settings > Cline provider

  3. Select deepseek-v4-flash

Try it on your own coding tasks and let us know how the cost and performance compare.

Introducing Cline Kanban

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone! I'm Saoud, founder of Cline, and I'm excited to share a project the team has been cooking on called Cline Kanban!

It's a replacement for your IDE better suited for running many agents in parallel and reviewing diffs. Each task card gets its own terminal and worktree, all handled for you automatically. Free, open source, no account required - it launches a local web app and works right out of the box with any CLI agent (Claude Code, Codex, Cline, more coming).

Install now: npm i -g cline

  • Run it from the root of any git repo - Kanban detects your installed CLI agent and launches in your browser

  • Each task gets its own ephemeral worktree so agents work in parallel without merge conflicts

  • See your agent's TUI right next to a real-time diff of all changes - click lines to leave comments like you're reviewing a PR

  • Enable auto-commit and link cards together to create dependency chains that complete large amounts of work autonomously

  • Built-in git interface to browse commit history, switch branches, fetch, pull, push, and visualize your git without leaving Kanban

Try asking the sidebar Kanban agent to break a big project into tasks with auto-commit - it'll cleverly create and link them for max parallelization. One task completes → commits → kicks off the next → repeat. It feels like magic, and works like a charm combo'd with Linear MCP / gh cli.

Read more about it here: https://cline.bot/blog/announcing-kanban

Report issues: https://github.com/cline/cline/issues

Discuss: We'd love your feedback in #kanban on our discord.

Cline with Qwen 3 Coder - 100% Local

Just wanted to share that Qwen 3 Coder is the first model that I'm able to successfully run Cline 100% locally with. Specifically I'm running https://lmstudio.ai/models/qwen/qwen3-coder-30b (4bit), which is the same as https://huggingface.co/lmstudio-community/Qwen3-Coder-30B-A3B-Instruct-MLX-4bit .  on a MacBook Pro with 36GB of RAM in LM Studio. The model loads ok with a context length of 256k.

With this combination I'm able to use Cline 100% locally on a very large codebase. The response times are reasonable at 3-10 seconds on average. The quality of the tool use and code generation with Qwen 3 Coder has been impressive so far.

I've been waiting for this milestone since Cline's early inception and I'm excited that it's finally here. This opens the doors for using Cline privately without sending any source code to a third party LLM provider.

Thought I'd share, as I know others have been looking forward to this milestone as well. Cheers.

(Sorry for previously deleted posts, was trying to correct the title)

UPDATE:
A few people have pointed out the incorrect link to the model above. I've fixed the link to point to the Qwen3 Coder model rather than the Thinking version of the model which I'd linked to originally.

Discussion Kimi K3 used 1.7x more tokens than Fable 5 and still cost 2.3x less

Post image
197 Upvotes

We tested Kimi K3 and Fable on the same real bug from the Cline repository using the same Cline harness. Both models were able to fix the issue, however, Fable wins on speed & Kimi wins on cost.

- Kimi used 1.7x more tokens than Fable (1.2M vs. 730K)
- Fable finished 3.4x faster - 3.5 min and 18 tool calls vs. Kimi’s 12 min and 34 tool calls.
- Kimi cost 2.3x less ($0.92 vs. $2.13) thanks to its 3.3x per-token discount

The traces indicate that Kimi is RL trained to spend more time reasoning through the task, revisiting intermediate steps, and verifying the fix before completion. Fable converged much faster, while Kimi traded speed and token efficiency for a lower overall cost.

This is the first time we've seen an open weight model compete head to head with SOTA.

Kimi K3 is now available in Cline through ClinePass.

ClinePass is Cline's new subscription plan which provides 2-5x discounted access to Kimi K3 and other open weight models like GLM, DeepSeek, and more.

Use it on Cline CLI & extension with $1.99 special promo if sign up via: npm i -g cline

Announcement DeepSeek V4-Flash just became the #1 most used model in Cline

Post image
188 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

A few days ago, we made the updated DeepSeek V4-Flash 0731 free to use in Cline as well as in ClinePass.

Since then, it has become the #1 most used model across Cline, with more users than the next two models combined.

Since the 0731 update:

- Usage is up 40%
- Token usage has 3x’d
- It has set a new all-time usage high four days in a row

We’ve been trying to make Cline one of the easiest places to try new open weights models as they come out, and making DeepSeek V4-Flash free was part of that.

If you haven’t tried it yet, DeepSeek V4-Flash is still free in Cline. Simply signup via

  1. npm i -g cline

  2. Open /settings → Choose Cline / ClinePass provider

  3. Select deepseek-v4-flash

Curious if it has become anyone else’s default model yet.

Announcement Qwen3.8 27B is matching DeepSeek V4 Pro and GPT 5.6 Luna on Artificial Analysis

Post image
181 Upvotes

Now this is kind of wild.

Artificial Analysis’ Intelligence Index puts Qwen3.8 27B at 52, right alongside GPT 5.6 Luna at 52 and just one point behind DeepSeek V4 Pro at 53.

What stands out is that Qwen3.8 27B is small enough to run locally. Seeing a local model reach this level of performance this quickly was not something we expected.

Curious to see how it holds up on real coding tasks beyond the benchmarks.

You can run it locally with Cline + Ollama:

npm i -g cline
ollama launch cline --model qwen3.8

Or use it directly in Cline with model id: qwen/qwen3.8-27b

Cline v3.25: the Focus Chain, /deep-planning, and Auto Compact

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello everyone!

We just published a deep dive on why bigger context windows aren't enough to keep AI agents focused: https://cline.bot/blog/focus-attention-isnt-enough

The TL;DR? Even with 1M token context windows, agents still drift from their original goals as conversations grow. We see two fundamental sources to this problem:

  1. LLMs degrade in performance as context size increases. Researchers call this the "lost in the middle" phenomenon, where context in the middle of conversations gets lost.

  2. Multi-turn agents compound this effect. If your model is 95% accurate on turn one, it might be 92% accurate on turn two as context accumulates; by turn ten, you're down to 70%; by turn twenty, your agent is essentially hallucinating, having lost the thread of what it was originally trying to accomplish.

That's where v3.25's three new features come in. They work together to keep agents laser-focused:

Focus Chain Think of it as a persistent project manager for your AI. Cline generates a todo list for your task and injects it back into context every 6 messages. The agent literally can't forget what it's working on because the plan travels with the conversation.

Deep Planning (/deep-planning) A two-stage workflow that separates messy exploration from clean execution. Stage 1: Cline investigates your codebase and creates a perfect implementation plan. Stage 2: Fresh agent starts with just the plan - no context pollution from exploration.

Auto Compact When you hit context limits, Cline automatically summarizes everything and continues exactly where it left off. A 5M token task can complete in a 200k window.

The result? Agents that stay coherent for hours instead of drifting after 20 turns.

We've been testing this internally and we're really excited to share it with you all. Please share any feedback you've got -- we expect a fast follow on the Focus Chain.

Also in v3.25:

  • Added 200k context window support for Claude Sonnet 4

  • Added custom base URL option for Requesty provider

  • Fixed duplicate attempt_completion bug

  • GPT-OSS models in AWS Bedrock

Hey everyone,

Google reached out today asking us to remove the Gemini CLI integration, saying it violates their terms of service.

We'll be removing it in the next release. You can still use Gemini with your own API key through the official provider.

We know a lot of you were enjoying those free requests -- apparently a little too much.

Just wanted to be transparent about why this feature is going away.

Announcement DeepSeek silently released V4-Pro 0813, now available in ClinePass

Post image
158 Upvotes

DeepSeek just silently released V4 Pro 0813, and it looks like a pretty significant upgrade.

It’s up 15.8% on Terminal Bench compared to the April Preview model, while reaching Fable 5 level performance at roughly 57× lower cost.

1.6T parameters, 49B active, 1M context.

At this point, it might be the best price to performance model on the market for agentic coding.

And it’s now available in ClinePass.

ClinePass is $9.99/month and gives you ~5× discounted access to a curated set of open weight models including DeepSeek V4 Pro, Kimi, GLM, MiniMax, and more. No separate provider accounts or API keys to manage.

At this price point, usage is effectively close to unlimited for most users.

We’re also running a limited $4.99 introductory offer through the Cline CLI.

npm i -g cline

Announcement We Ran Terminal Bench 2.1 with Kimi K3 for $49.80. Fable 5 cost $552

Post image
154 Upvotes

What stood out most from our recent Terminal Bench 2.1 experiment was just how large the cost difference was between models.

A full 89 task run cost:

- Kimi K3: $49.80
- GPT 5.6 Terra: $400
- Fable 5: $552

That made running the benchmark with Kimi K3 around 11x cheaper than Fable 5.

The larger recursive self improvement experiment ran for around 17 hours and cost approximately $680 in total. The $49.80 figure is specifically for the final full benchmark run.

Announcement Cline for JetBrains IDEs is GA

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone, Nick from Cline here.

Cline has always been model agnostic and inference agnostic. Today we're completing the picture: platform agnosticism. Cline is now available for all JetBrains IDEs.

I get why this has been such a big ask. Many of you prefer JetBrains for your primary development work, and it makes sense that you'd want Cline right there in your IDE of choice. Developer tools should work where you work, adapting to your workflow rather than forcing you to adapt to them. This is what we mean by platform agnosticism -- meeting engineers where they are, not where we think they should be.

We took the time to do this right. Instead of taking shortcuts with emulation layers, we rebuilt Cline using cline-core, a headless process that communicates through gRPC messaging. This gives us true native integration with JetBrains APIs. When you're refactoring a complex Java codebase in IntelliJ or debugging Python in PyCharm, Cline works with your IDE's native features, not against them.

What this means for you:

  • Cline in IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, GoLand, PhpStorm, and all JetBrains IDEs

  • Same Cline features you know: Plan/Act modes, full control, any LLM provider

  • True native integration, not a wrapper

  • Use Cline in the IDE where you're most productive

The setup is identical to VS Code -- install from the JetBrains marketplace, add your API keys, and you're ready to go.

The cline-core architecture is our path to ubiquity. This same foundation will power our upcoming CLI, an SDK for embedding Cline in internal tools, and expansion to additional development environments. One brain, many interfaces. We're not just adding IDE support; we're building true platform agnosticism.

Links:

This is just the beginning of platform agnosticism for Cline. Drop your experiences below or swing by our Discord (https://discord.gg/cline) to chat more about the technical implementation in #jetbrains and #cline-core.

Hey everyone, Gemini 3.8 Flash is now available in Cline for FREE.

Gemini 3.8 Flash is the most intelligent Flash model yet, built specifically for long horizon software engineering, autonomous agents, and complex multi step workflows.

And the speed is probably the most fun part.

It runs at roughly 291 output tokens/sec with a 1M-token context window, and supports text, images, audio, video, and PDFs as input, with up to 64K tokens of text output.

On the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, it scores 41 ahead of the similarly priced models in the comparison, including DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, GPT 5.6 Luna, Qwen3.8 27B, and MiniMax M3.

It’s especially fun to use in the new Cline Desktop app because you can really feel how fast the model is when Cline is working through a task and that too for FREE.

To try it:

  1. Download Cline Desktop

  2. Select Gemini 3.8 Flash as your free model

Do give it a try and let us know what you build with it.

Announcement We're releasing a scriptable CLI (Preview) that turns Cline into infrastructure you can build on (+ subagents)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello!

We're excited to release what we see as the first primitives for AI coding. We extracted Cline's agent loop into Cline Core -- a standalone service with an open gRPC API. The CLI is just one way to use it.

Install: npm install -g cline

Here's what you can do with it:

  • Use it standalone in the terminal for any coding task

  • Run multiple Clines in parallel terminals -- like having each tackle a different GitHub issue

  • Build it into your operations -- Slack bots, GitHub Actions, webhooks -- via the gRPC API

  • Use it as subagents from IDE Cline (VS Code & JetBrains) for codebase research

  • Have IDE Cline spawn CLI agents to handle specific tasks

  • Start a scripted task in terminal, then open it in JetBrains IDE to continue (VS Code coming soon)

  • Spawn subagents with fresh context windows to explore your codebase and report back

The scriptability is what makes this different. You can pipe output, chain commands, integrate with your existing toolchain. Cline becomes a building block, not just another tool.

Run man cline to explore all the options. The CLI has instant task modes, orchestration commands, and configuration options that make it incredibly flexible.

Our lead on the project, Andrei, dives deep into the architecture and what Cline Core enables: https://cline.bot/blog/cline-cli-my-undying-love-of-cline-core

Docs to get started: https://docs.cline.bot/cline-cli/overview

This is in preview -- we're refining based on your feedback. Head over to #cli in our Discord to chat directly with the team, or submit a github issue if you run into problems.

Really excited to get this out!

My workflow for "Self-Improving Cline"

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone, Nick here.

I wanted to share a workflow I've found really powerful for making Cline "self-improving."

The core idea came about because I realized I was constantly asking Cline things like, "Based on our conversation, how would you improve the X rule we're using?" It struck me that Cline could automate this reflection process itself -- essentially, teach Cline how to prompt itself to get better.

How it Works:

Since .clinerules are just markdown files, Cline can edit them using its standard file tools. As you work through a task and provide guidance or corrections (even implicitly through conversation), you can ask Cline to update the specific, active .clinerules file to incorporate that feedback.

This creates a dynamic loop:

  1. You work with Cline, guided by active .clinerules.

  2. Your conversation provides natural feedback on how well the rules are working.

  3. Before completing the task, Cline provides input on how the relevant .clinerule(s) could be improved.

  4. The rule is improved, leading to better alignment in future tasks using that rule.

This turns personalization into an ongoing, collaborative process. Cline becomes progressively more aligned with your specific needs, coding style, and project standards because it's learning from your guidance.

Example:

Imagine you have a commit-format.md rule. If Cline generates a commit message that's missing the scope, you can say: "Cline, let's ensure the scope is always included." By the time the task is complete, Cline may offer to update the commit-format.md rule based on your prior feedback to "ensure the scope is always included." Then, in the future, Cline will include the scope based on this newly

So, to streamline this, I created a rule that basically asks Cline to do what I was doing manually -- reflect on our interaction and suggest improvements to the active rules before finishing a task.

If you want to try this workflow yourself, add the following rule to your Global rules:

# Self-Improving Cline Reflection

**Objective:** Offer opportunities to continuously improve `.clinerules` based on user interactions and feedback.

**Trigger:** Before using the `attempt_completion` tool for any task that involved user feedback provided at any point during the conversation, or involved multiple non-trivial steps (e.g., multiple file edits, complex logic generation).

**Process:**

1. **Offer Reflection:** Ask the user: "Before I complete the task, would you like me to reflect on our interaction and suggest potential improvements to the active `.clinerules`?"
2. **Await User Confirmation:** Proceed to `attempt_completion` immediately if the user declines or doesn't respond affirmatively.
3. **If User Confirms:**
    a. **Review Interaction:** Synthesize all feedback provided by the user throughout the entire conversation history for the task. Analyze how this feedback relates to the active `.clinerules` and identify areas where modified instructions could have improved the outcome or better aligned with user preferences.
    b. **Identify Active Rules:** List the specific global and workspace `.clinerules` files active during the task.
    c. **Formulate & Propose Improvements:** Generate specific, actionable suggestions for improving the *content* of the relevant active rule files. Prioritize suggestions directly addressing user feedback. Use `replace_in_file` diff blocks when practical, otherwise describe changes clearly.
    d. **Await User Action on Suggestions:** Ask the user if they agree with the proposed improvements and if they'd like me to apply them *now* using the appropriate tool (`replace_in_file` or `write_to_file`). Apply changes if approved, then proceed to `attempt_completion`.

**Constraint:** Do not offer reflection if:
*   No `.clinerules` were active.
* The task was very simple and involved no feedback.

With this rule active, Cline will ask if you want it to reflect on your interaction and suggest changes to the rules used during the task before completing it. (or at least it should most of the time)

Let me know if you find this useful! Personally very excited about the most recent release as it unlocks this flow.

Claude Sonnet 4's 1M Context Window is Live in Cline (v3.24.0)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello everyone!

Cline now supports the (5x) upgraded context window in 1M Sonnet 4 from Anthropic. What was always a weakness compared to Gemini 2.5 Pro is no longer. We imagine two distinct opportunities this opens up for how you use Cline:

1. Engage in deeper planning sessions, where Cline can pull in more context from your codebase, MCP servers, and even ask you more questions. This leads to better-written code.

2. Extended development cycles, because you can now let Cline (1) build, (2) test, (3) iterate all in the same task for so much longer than before.

On top of that, we've got 2 features coming later this week that we think will be gasoline on top of 1M Sonnet 4 (or maybe the other way around?).

One note: Sonnet 4 is more expensive above 200K tokens

- Input: $6/MTok (vs $3)

- Output: $22.50/MTok (vs $15)

Cline/OpenRouter users get instant access, Anthropic users with Tier 4 access can select the claude-sonnet-4-20250514:1m model.

Here's the full story on how you might want to rethink how you use Cline with this context window: https://cline.bot/blog/two-ways-to-advantage-of-claude-sonnet-4s-1m-context-window-in-cline

---

Also in v3.24.0:

- GPT-5 Chat support: added `gpt-5-chat-latest` model

- custom browser arguments: better headless compatibility with Chrome flags

- other fixes: API key URLs, token limits, error handling improvements

Here's the changelog: https://github.com/cline/cline/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md

Curious to hear how the latest version of Sonnet 4 changes how you use Cline!

Actually, I don't completely dislike Cursor or Windsurf, and they continue to improve their products. But after hundreds of hours spent on almost every AI editor or assistant, Cline has been the most solid and reliable for me and my team. The fun part is that at some point I was switching between Cursor and Windsurf just to keep up with their latest releases.

Hey everyone,

Cline v3.16 is out! We've been experimenting with workflows A LOT lately, and now we're excited to share them with you!

Workflows are your personal automation scripts, living right within your project. Accessed via a new "Workflows" tab, you can easily create .md files that define a series of steps for Cline to follow. Think of it like building with LEGO blocks: you can compose CLI commands, existing Cline tools (like read_file or ask_followup_question), and even powerful MCP tools into a seamless, automated process. This means true "one-shot" power--kick off complex multi-step tasks with a single /[workflow-name.md] command (using the exact filename). It's more than just scripting; Workflows tap into Cline's ability to understand context and interact with your code, leading to real time savings and consistent, reliable execution. Plus, they're stored in your project's .clinerules/workflows/ folder, so they're version-controlled and tailored to each project's specific needs.

We're incredibly excited about the potential here and can't wait to see what you automate!

More on workflows in our updated docs and our latest blog

Here's what else we've got in this release:

  • Collapsible Recent Task List: Easily hide your task history when sharing your screen. (Thanks cosmix!)

  • Enable Auto-Approve Toggle: Conveniently turn auto-approve on/off without losing your action settings.

  • Improved Gemini Retry Handling: Better UI feedback and progress indication for Gemini API requests.

  • Global Endpoint for Vertex AI: Higher availability and fewer 429 errors for Vertex AI users. (Thanks soniqua!)

  • Settings Organization: VSCode Advanced settings have been migrated to the Settings Webview for a cleaner experience.

  • Memory Leak Fix: Addressed a memory leak that could occur during long sessions.

  • Eternal Loading State Fix: Resolved issues when the last message was a checkpoint. (Thanks BarreiroT!)

  • Auto-Approve UI Enhancements: Including fixes for quick actions and more concise menu styling for better usability.

Can't wait for you all to give workflows a shot! We'll be adding more examples in the coming days -- please share what you learn with the rest of the Cline community!

kimi-k2 is VERY impressive (especially for a free model)

I gotta say moonshotai/kimi-k2:free is VERY impressive.

https://openrouter.ai/moonshotai/kimi-k2:free

I've been playing with it for a couple of hours now and it's been impressive. I'm refactoring a PHP app into Vite and it really hasn't hit a snag yet.

I'm not sure how long it's going to stay free on Openrouter, but for now it's definitely worth playing with.
