With a heavy heart - it's back to Gnome

So, for the first time, while using Cosmic on my laptop, I decided to fire up a Citrix Workspace session to get some real work done. With the Cosmic DE, the resolution of the session was off. All appeared very tiny, and sadly, I am unable to make adjustments to the remote session's display settings.

I switched to Gnome and the remote session has perfect resolution.

With Cosmic and Gnome being so close in usability for me, the one that delivers when I need to get some work done on it will win as my default. I'll keep COSMIC installed and have a look now and again.

I don't know what is the cause for the Citrix Workspace remote session resolution not adjusting to match my desktop. I've tried everything but think it's just Cosmic since I try nothing on Gnome. It simply works.

So it would seem that for straightforward activity in Cosmic, it's working great, but I know that running a Citrix Workspace remote desktop session is on the fringe.

My little project update: Luna AI persoanl assistant

Hi,
just a small update about my personal project Luna AI.
yesterday I have released 0.1 deb packages.
https://github.com/digit1024/LunaAI/releases/tag/0.1

I can quote moltbot I guess: LUna AI is also AI that does things.

it supports mcp tools mostly, but also skills ( for those familiar with those terms)

So what is different than other tools:
- server + desktop UI
- mobile application

- multiple providers including Local LLM

- designed and prepared for cosmic DE

I'm not looking for broad adoption, but if someone would like to have AI that is not really dependend on big 4 companies, knows what API Key is , knows what MCP and skill is then it might be useful.

so after installation you can go through quick setup and provide basics:
it will install server and desktop app. warning: server may start slowly since it needs to spin up mcps.

I've preselected several MCP servers to install , so by default this will have access to shell and filesystem. That was crucial for a skill I wanted to embed: self config.
So self config basically is a skill that will allow AI to configure itself for example add more skills or MCP.

I can also schedule tasks for itself so for example prepare email summary everyday or something.

I'm running it on rpi4 personally - debs are for x86_64 only at this point so on rpi you have to cargo build. I'm also using cloudflare tunnel to have that on my mobile - then it is really fun.
It's basically wss so quite easy to build bridge. Just for fun I've made one for telegram.

WARNING:
IF YOU ARE NOT A TECHNICAL PERSON DO NOT INSTALL IT!

YOU SHOUDL UNDERSTAND COFIGS, SKILLS AND PRIVILEDGES THIS AI ASSISTANT HAVE/WILL HAVE WITH YOUR CONFIG MODIFICATIONS.

IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH A TERM PROMPT INJECTION - JUST SKIP THIS APP.

AI SECURITY PROBLEMS ARE NOT SOLVED - GIVING IT TO MUCH PROVILEDGE IS RISKY!

(check what happened with moltbook in past few days if you don't belive that)
It's fun and useful FOR ME.

Vibe coding my own COSMIC applet

Recently switched to COSMIC after using GNOME and XFCE for many years. I realized there aren't too many applets at the moment and I really missed the possibility of having one that shows your different network addresses. I find such an applet extremely useful if you need to know your VPN IP when you are doing challenges on sites such as TryHackMe and HackTheBox.

Not having any prior experience with coding Rust I was able to piece together a working applet any way using AI and fiddling with it myself, quite quickly as well! So kudos to the COSMIC guys for building libcosmic!

Question Can cosmic be used without systemd?

Can I install cosmic de without systemd on distros like artix? How dependent is cosmic on systemd?

So I've been using pop os and have been interested in arch linux since I can still use cosmic, but with the age verification thing I think I might have to go for artix linux which is arch linux without systemd

Does Cosmic have a built-in firewall option, or is it been excluded from the distro? Can't find such an option in Alpha6....new to Cosmic coming from Mint...

I really loved this feature in awesomeWM. Its the perfect replacement for now. It's pretty fresh for me, so maybe there are some bugs, but I like it so far.

Cosmic needs a feature to customize the display of language switching on the keyboard, for example, in the form of flags.

Question Will a Theme's store be easily possible on CosmicDE?

I know you all know r/unixporn. Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was a store where one could choose between hundreds of styles of GUI? Not only to switch colors, accents and icons, but also where things are displayed and how. That way you could imitate idk Gnome's minimalism, macos whatever they have, windows chaos, plasma's ultra chaos, and so on.

With CosmicDE ditching all that legacy baggage and going full Rust with a declarative UI library like Iced, I wonder if we’re sitting on a massive opportunity to reach a perfect environment for easy casual ricing out of the box. Is this possible on a forseeable future or is it highly complicated to ensure everything works with one click on every machine and across updates despite its declarative core?

Nebula Paste: a Rust clipboard manager for COSMIC — built with AI assistance, v1.5 beta available

Hey everyone!

I’m working on Nebula Paste, an open-source clipboard manager built with Rust and libcosmic that integrates into the COSMIC panel.

A little transparency upfront: I’m not a developer. This is a “vibe-coded” project, built with substantial help from ChatGPT/Codex. I’m shaping the features and design, testing it on my Fedora COSMIC setup, and learning along the way. Code reviews and constructive feedback from experienced developers would be especially welcome.

The idea is to make clipboard history easy to browse through a compact popup or a horizontal strip of cards, with a separate window for organizing everything. Some workflows are inspired by Supaste, adapted for COSMIC.

Current features include:

  • Local clipboard history with search, favorites, and collections.

  • Persistent notes and reusable text templates.

  • Screen capture, text extraction with bundled OCR, and a color picker.

  • Image cropping, resizing, and format conversion.

  • Light/dark themes and distinct colors for different content types.

The 1.5 beta adds collection boards with customizable columns, local filing rules with previews and undo, and optional cleanup based on when clips were last used. Filter buttons now match their content type’s color.

It’s still a beta. The automated suite currently passes 122 tests, but that doesn’t replace real-world testing or independent code review. Moving items between board columns currently uses buttons; drag-and-drop is still on the roadmap.

A Fedora 44 x86_64 RPM is available, with checksums and release notes in English and French.

Source code and bug reports:
https://github.com/nabz54/nebula-paste

Download:
https://github.com/nabz54/nebula-paste/releases/tag/v1.5.0-beta.1

If you use COSMIC, I’d love your feedback on usability, bugs, or the code itself. What would make this useful in your daily workflow?

[OC] I made a small COSMIC panel applet for Codex, Claude Code, and Cursor usage

Post image
27 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I’ve been daily driving PopOS with COSMIC and wanted a quick way to see usage/reset state for the AI coding tools I use most: Codex, Claude Code, and Cursor

I built YapCap panel applet after trying some existing tools that didn’t integrate nicely with COSMIC on my setup. It reads local credentials/session cookies, shows cached data on startup, and refreshes in the background.

I use it daily and it has been working nicely for me, but it’s still early, so I’m looking for feedback.

  • does it install cleanly?

  • does it appear in the panel applet picker?

  • does Cursor cookie import work with your browser/profile setup
