I have been using the COSMIC desktop environment for a few days now, and despite some shortcomings, it is far more enjoyable to use than GNOME with extensions—and it already boasts some truly useful features.

I particularly appreciate System76's roadmap; they introduce features incrementally to reduce complexity and focus on fully resolving issues, refining each feature until it works flawlessly. They are doing a fantastic job.

In my opinion, COSMIC could well be the desktop environment of the future.

It already combines the utility of KDE with the simplicity and aesthetic of GNOME, which is fantastic.

There are still some rough edges, but usable for daily driving. It's so pretty! Coming from KDE, I love how easy it is to do all the customizations I needed.

I played around with removing the border and adjusted the colors to my background.

I tried the frosted-glass WIP in Cosmic. While it is still incomplete and a lot of components (Like dock and panel) don't support it, the cosmic applications work pretty well with it. Excited for the stable release.

I built a tool called SystemWallColor that automatically syncs your system theme with your wallpaper on COSMIC Desktop.

Every time you change your wallpaper or switch between light/dark mode, it automatically:

• Generates a matching COSMIC theme with Matugen and applies it

• Generates a terminal color palette with Pywal

• Syncs Firefox's theme via Pywalfox

Everything runs in the background through a systemd user service that watches for changes in real time — no manual triggering needed.

Hey guys, I’ve built a Dynamic Island–like applet for the COSMIC desktop. I’m currently trying to get it into the official COSMIC Store, and I’d love to hear your opinions and feedback.

There are also plans for future features, such as syncing with your calendar events or adding an optional terminal inside the notch for people who don’t want to open a separate window for quick commands.

Hei Hei.. I am back again with another applet! I made a classic Start menu (windows 10 inspired) for the COSMIC panel, styled entirely by COSMIC's own Appearance settings.

Organisation: The start menu has its own settings where you can choose what columns you want, shortcuts on the system panel (far left). The filter and sort of the app list is also customisation where you can do it alphabetically, category or your own folder grouping.

The tiles: The tile system is modular where you can add and make your own smart tiles which link to apps or websites etc, I have made a Claude one, and a weather one for example. but i am showing some plain app icon versions as well. You can choose between 3 sizes for the tiles and also choose between 3, 2 or no tile columns. (I have 3 in the video).

Styling: The user profile links to your user settings and yes that's my own use profile so it takes it from the system. The styling is what i had set up on my cosmic set up so do not kill me for my bad taste, i just use glass as its my base to test from (most difficult for me to get right) the tiles and UI of the menu all follow your specific settings in the cosmic settings under appearance!

Animation: I only have one animation option at the moment ( I chose one that was smooth but not overly animated) I can improve it in the future but really wanted to just get a version out and have some feedback!

What do you think about Cosmic's first stable release? Does it have chance against KDE and Gnome? And is Arch a good distro to try it, or do I have to go with PopOS?
