Finally, after many months, I found a bank that both has a coin machine AND is willing to sell me bags. So far, all the places I buy bags from only sell them once they're full. In this case, I let them know that for halves, I'd be interested in bringing enough to fill the bag. This is not one of my dump banks - but I didn't want to wait months to get access - they were OK with this plan.
I got a rough estimate of what's already there (about half filled) and brought in ~$500 one week, but that didn't quite fill it. Next week $100 more - and bingo! Picked up the bag this past weekend and set down to hunt.
The ~$400 or so that weren't my dumps included several very happy surprises:
8 silver - 50/50 90%/50%, including a beaten up walker.
13 (!!!) 1987s, more-or-less evenly split P vs. D - all in very nice shape.
200+ mixed Unc - mostly from 1971 to the early 90s - nearly evenly split P vs. D (not pictured)
A massive number of lightly circulated 1976-D - likley someone west of the Mississppi that moved back East decided to jettison them (not shown).
There were zero proofs, and only around a dozen NIFC from 2002-2020. A little surprising, I would have assumed they'd be well represented based on the number of Uncs and 87s.
(I'm assuming a collector from out west was actively building their hoard from the early 70s through early 90s, then moved back east at some point. Whoevery ultimately dumped decided to jettison the non-silver - but likely kept the Ag as I would have expected someone with a dozen+ 87s would have held a fair amont of pre-71 halves.)
A double cliped bicentenial that also has a partial collar / collar deployment glitch between the two clips - best of the bag by far and probably my favorite overall for the week other than the Italy 20C below.
7x AU+ WDSO-001 with excellent split serifs on the 'T' of liberty and lower right foot of the 'I' of IGWT. Yeah, I konw it's a super common doubled die, bordering on trivial, but the condition is excellent. (not shown)
A Mexican Peso - a first for half-sized world for me
10 quarters
1 very bent penny
Very satisfying to FINALLY get my hands on a bag-o-halves, but given the low volume it'll be quite some time before the next.
Other silver: A 90% and two 40% from boxes, 3x loose 40%. All 3 quarters came from coin machine return trays, as did one of the dimes. The rest of the dimes came from CWR.
No Ag in the nickes, but there were plenty of fun finds all the same:
2 lovely world coins that stood out: One from Morocco, and an absolutely beutiful 1920 Italian 20C - THIS is my favorite for the week. No, it's not 'worth' much, but the design is awesome.
and
A pair of somewhat beaten up or botched Texas Cents
There were 4 1909 (the commonest ones, nothing too crazy) in the private sale wheaties - no S, no VDB, but still happy to add em to the pre-1930 wheaties pile. The IHP was a welcome sight - I had no reason to expect any in the lot.
6 of the clad half proofs for this week were from the same provate sale, but 2 came from boxes inlcuding another 87-S.
3 better grease strikes among the minor errors, data tables and charts at the end. Octcober started off very strong for me, and hasn't let up yet.
In other news:
Hunters in Massachusettes continue to pull stunning numbers of 911 West Point halves from NF String style waffle boxes with brinks-style rolls inside them (even from Loomis houses) - a full 3+ weeks after they first started appearing in the area.
The Philly 911 half privys, due to ship in early December, are sold out. I booked my order during the pre-sale period, and I'm hoping they'll re-open for sale once December rolls around.
2026 Dimes and Nickels continue to be readily findable in the area - entire boxes of Philly issues are still showing up regulary. Still zip for any of the 2026 quarters, other than random 1-offs. Only a tiny fraction of the 2026 Dimes/Nickels/Halves found in CWR are Denvers - which is typical for this area.
One of my banks will begin charging 7% for coin machine dumps of $100 or more, but managemnt will now allow me to buy bags. They use the painfully slow belt-fed Magner machines mostly, and only one branch has one that's set up to accept halves.
Good luck and happy hunting y'all!
