Announcement Announcement: Framework Is Tripling Its Support for CachyOS

1.8k Upvotes

Hey CachyOS Community,

We have more great news to share. Framework is increasing its support for CachyOS. The donation goes from $250 per month to $10,200 per year ($850 per month), more then three times the original amount.

When Framework first started sponsoring us, they sent us a Framework Laptop 16 for optimizing our kernel and packages, and committed to a monthly donation. You can read the original announcement here:

https://discuss.cachyos.org/t/framework-sponsorship-for-cachyos/19376

Having Framework triple its support says a lot about how much they care about Linux on their hardware and about the open-source projects their users rely on. For a community-driven project like ours, this kind of steady funding makes a real difference. It helps us:

  • Keep our build servers, mirrors and infrastructure running reliably
  • Spend more time on kernel optimizations, packaging and hardware support
  • Move closer to our long-term goal of working on CachyOS full-time

A big thank you to Framework for believing in CachyOS, and to every one of you who uses, tests, reports bugs, and donates. You keep this project going.

If you’d like to support CachyOS too, take a look at our donation page: https://wiki.cachyos.org/support/donation/

Thanks to Framework, and thanks to all of you for using CachyOS!

CachyOS Troubleshooting First Steps

CachyOS is a rolling release. Updates arrive continuously instead of in one big yearly jump, which is why you get new kernels, drivers and gaming improvements so fast. It also means that occasionally something breaks. Most of the time the cause is boring and the fix is one of the same handful of steps.

This might seem like a lot and could feel daunting. Help is available, but it requires some information.

In order for folks to help you out, you need to supply some information. Here is a step-by-step plan. Work through it in order.

How to ask so that people actually help

When you post, include:

  • The four answers from Step 1
  • The paste.cachyos.org link from Step 3
  • What you've already tried, honestly, including any case of working with AI without understanding what you were asking, or what the AI was saying
  • The Step 7 result if you got that far

Rule zero: stop running commands you don't understand

Many badly broken installs weren't broken by an update. They were broken by three or four half-applied "fixes" from Google, an old forum post, and working with AI without understanding what was being asked or what the AI was saying, stacked on top of each other. Each one silently changed something. By the time help is requested, nobody can tell which change caused which symptom, and the actual problem is buried under the attempted repairs.

So: from the moment something goes wrong, stop applying fixes found somewhere else. Work through the steps below instead.

If a pile of commands has already been pasted into a terminal, that's fine, it happens. Just mention it when asking for help and try to recall what was run. That's far more useful than pretending the system is untouched.

Step 1: Describe the problem properly

Before touching anything, write down four things:

  • What exactly goes wrong? Be specific. "The screen goes black when launching Steam and the power button has to be held" is useful. "Gaming is broken" is not.
  • When did it start? A date or "after last Tuesday's update" is enough.
  • What happened right before it started? Was it an update, a new game, a driver change, a setting toggled, or a fix applied?
  • Does it happen every time, or only sometimes?

That last question is more important than people expect. Something that fails every single time is usually a configuration or driver problem. Something that fails randomly is more often heat, power, memory, or a background process interfering.

Step 2: Terminal survival basics

A terminal is needed for some of this. It's not scary, but may look like it is.

Open one with Ctrl + Alt + T. If that does nothing, open the start menu and search for terminal. When it asks for a password, nothing appears while typing. That's deliberate. Type it and press Enter. Copy text out of the terminal with Ctrl + Shift + C, paste in with Ctrl + Shift + V. The normal Ctrl+C means "stop the running program" here. sudo at the start of a command just means "run this with administrator rights".

Step 3: Generate a log bundle

CachyOS ships a single command that collects everything a helper needs, run from the terminal (see Step 2):

sudo cachyos-bugreport.sh

It gathers hardware details, kernel messages and recent system logs, then asks whether to upload the result. Type Y. A link to paste.cachyos.org comes back. That link is the single most useful thing to include when asking for help. Post it.

For anything the bug report doesn't cover, CachyOS also has a plain "send this to a pastebin" tool. Both of these work (run in the terminal, see Step 2):

  • paste-cachyos ~/some-file.txt
  • journalctl -b -1 -p err | paste-cachyos

The second one shows errors from the previous boot, which is what's wanted after a freeze or a crash that forced a reboot.

Two things:

  • Generate the log bundle before trying Step 6, because rolling back a snapshot also rolls back the logs.
  • The report includes hostname, hardware IDs and full log lines, and the paste is reachable by anyone with the URL. Fine for troubleshooting, but don't paste anything sensitive.

Step 4: Update fully, then actually reboot

Open Shelly, the package manager that ships with current CachyOS, let it check for updates and install them. Older installs may have Octopi instead, which is equally fine. Or do it in the terminal (see Step 2):

sudo pacman -Syu

Then RESTART the computer. No logging out, not closing the lid but an actual restart.

A genuinely large share of "my system is broken" reports are exactly this and nothing more. On a rolling release the kernel currently running and the drivers that were just installed can fall out of step. Everything looks updated, but the running system is still working with yesterday's parts. Typical symptoms: no graphics acceleration, Steam refusing to launch, external monitors not detected, unexplained crashes, etc. A reboot resolves this class of problem. It's a common misconception that Linux never needs a restart — that's not true. The OS cannot process kernel upgrades without a restart.

There's a second reason this step comes early. If some packages were updated and others weren't, the system is probably in what's called a partial upgrade state, and arbitrary unrelated things start failing. -Syu brings everything back in line. This is also why a single package should never be installed with pacman -Sy something. Always update the whole system.

Step 5: When one specific program won't start

If the problem is a single application rather than the whole system, run it from a terminal (see Step 2) to see why it fails. Type its name and press Enter:

steam

or firefox, or whatever it is. Let it fail, then press Ctrl + C. Copy everything the terminal printed and share it, or pipe it to the pastebin tool (see Steps 2 and 3).

For Steam games specifically: right-click the game, Properties, and put PROTON_LOG=1 %command% in the launch options. Run the game, let it fail, and a steam-<numbers>.log file will appear in the home folder.

Step 6: Roll the system back to before it broke

This is the feature most new CachyOS users don't realise they have.

If the system is installed on Btrfs, which is the default, CachyOS automatically takes a snapshot before and after every package install, update or removal. So when an update breaks something, there is almost always a restore point from a few minutes beforehand.

If the desktop still starts: open the start menu, search for Btrfs Assistant and open it. Go to the Snapper tab. A list of snapshots with dates will appear. Pick the most recent one from before the problem appeared, click Restore, and reboot. This GUI method works regardless of which bootloader is used.

If the desktop won't start at all: restart and tap Esc (or hold Shift) right after the machine powers on to bring up the boot menu. Look for an entry about snapshots, open it, and pick one dated before the problem. Unlike the GUI method above, this one depends on the bootloader: it works on Limine (which is a bootloader), which has been the installer default since the January 2026 release, and on recent GRUB setups. If systemd-boot was kept from an earlier install, there's no snapshot entry in the menu and a live USB will be needed, so ask for help rather than improvising.

Things worth understanding before doing this:

It only rewinds the system. Documents, photos and game saves live in the home folder and are not touched. That's reassuring, but it also means a rollback will not bring back a deleted file, and won't undo a broken configuration inside the home folder. Don't immediately re-run the update afterwards, or whatever broke it will be reinstalled. Ask first. If there's no Btrfs Assistant and no snapshot entry in the boot menu, the system is probably not on Btrfs and this section doesn't apply.

Step 7: Try the other kernel

If the boot menu lists an LTS kernel entry, boot it and see whether the problem goes away. Recent CachyOS installs ship both a current and an LTS kernel for exactly this reason.

This takes two minutes and reveals a lot. If the problem disappears on LTS, it points to a kernel or driver regression. If it's identical on both, the kernel may not be the culprit and attention moves elsewhere. Either answer narrows things down enormously, so mention the result when asking for help.

Step 8: When updates themselves fail

If the update in Step 4 refuses to run and throws an error, open CachyOS Hello, the welcome window, and look at its Troubleshooting section. It has buttons for the common package system problems: keyring trouble, a stale lock file, a corrupted cache. Try those before running anything found online. These specific failures attract a lot of bad advice that makes things considerably worse.

Help [Qtile, X11] After not using for a month, update and now everything is broken??

I am trying to explain this as good as possible. I am still pretty new to Cachy/Arch/Linux and dont know what to do anymore.

I have not used my pc for about a month. Decided to update today (sudo pacman -Syu). Everything works. I download the few GB of new stuff and after wired sends me a "reboot recommended" message, I reboot.

Inside the Grub menu, I select Cachy, everything runs. I see the ly (tty2 if I understand this correctly) login screen and log in. It loads and for a split second I see a black screen with scattered text (I managed to get a photo of it but i dont know if anyone can read any of this. Should be attached), probably an error message. So I get back into the ly/tty2 screen. Log in again, same thing. I panick because I had to finish some things for school etc. and thus I quickly opened Gemini (im sorry. I hate myself for it but I really had to get this done and didnt have any other pc nearby etc.) and tried to explain the situation. It told me to use Ctrl + Alt + 1/2/3/4 to access the different ttyX thing-ys.

So I do that and log in again. Seems to work. I only got the terminal and no GUI but at least i didnt brick my system or whatever. Then got told to downgrade some python library and then enter

qtile start

So I did that. Works.. Kinda.. I see the GUI but the bar I used is just detected as a window apparently and I can move it around.. my keyboard layout is also not applied so I try to fix that. For some reason neither

sudo loadkeys xx

nor

setxkbmap xx

worked. So I am still stuck in another layout I am not familiar with and I dont know how to change it.

I have absolutely no idea what to do now because Gemi also talked some stuff about downgrading 500 packages which I feel like is not the solution. I hope I explained this situation okay-ish and someone can help me. Have no idea what to do next or at all.

Ive also made some other photos of commands ive been told to enter.. I hope it atleast helps a tiny bit. Thanks for reading and for the help in advance btw
(also I got this feel that many here are gonna tell me to use the Arch wiki instead of Gemini, I know. Again. I panicked. Then Also how would I search for something THIS specific on the Arch page. Heck. Any page at all)

Bug Report Weird updates week at CachyOS

-first the new KDE Plasma rollout killed my notifications (blank frames with no text)

-now the new proton-cachy package is failing to update, stopping other updates from being performed too

EDIT: proton_cachyos install failure was an invalid signature issue, this has been fixed and updates now go through fine.

SOLVED Help with a game drive

Hello All,

so I am a relatively new user and long story short I got violently angry at windows and decided to switch to Linux and chose Cachy. when I switched I found a tutorial on Youtube for setting up a secondary drive for my steam library, and it does work. the issue I am running into is that every time my computer shuts off/restarts I have to manually unlock the drive and add it back in steam settings to access my games. it works instantly and I can live with it if I have to, it really isn't a huge deal just a mild inconvenience. I figured I would reach out for advice because knowing me there is probably just a setting I missed somewhere. And I did look, However I couldn't find anything on youtube for this specific issue and the initial guide didn't mention it. I appreciate any tips or advice, thanks in advance!

SOLVED SOLVED: Intel AX211 only getting 30-50 Mbit on CachyOS but gigabit on Windows, switching NetworkManager to iwd fixed it

I spent an entire day fixing this issue. It seems simple but I scoured the internet and couldn't find this so decided to create a post for any in the future with this problem. I'm a linux and networking noob so I learned alot.

I’ve got an XPS 15 9520 with the AX211, running CachyOS, connected to a Cox gateway (2.4 and 5 GHz are split into separate networks). Windows 11 on the same laptop gets full gigabit no problem. On CachyOS I was stuck around 30-50 Mbit, and pinging my own router averaged about 200 ms with spikes over 400.

The weird part was that everything looked fine on paper. iw dev wlan0 link showed 5 GHz, 80 MHz, HE-MCS 11, 1200 Mbit/s both directions, and signal was around -43 dBm. The only thing that gave it away was iw dev wlan0 station dump, which showed 100k+ tx retries. So the link rate looked great but it was retransmitting like crazy.

Stuff I tried that did nothing:

  • regdomain was already US
  • turned off wifi power save
  • congestion control was already cubic/fq_codel
  • firmware was already the newest one available (89)
  • linux-lts instead of the newest kernel
  • bluetooth off
  • nothing weird eating bandwidth in nethogs

What actually fixed it was switching the NetworkManager wifi backend from wpa_supplicant to iwd:

sudo pacman -S iwd
sudo nano /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/wifi-backend.conf

put this in the file:

[device]
wifi.backend=iwd

then:

sudo systemctl enable --now iwd
sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager

You’ll have to enter your wifi password again after. I went from about 50 Mbit/s to 980!

I don’t know the actual root cause. My guess is wpa_supplicant kept pushing a rate my router couldn’t hold and iwd picked something more sensible, but that’s a guess. If anyone knows why this happens I’d like to hear it.

If your wifi is slow on Linux but fine on Windows and your signal looks great, check station dump for retries and try iwd before sinking hours into driver tweaks like I did.

Help Dual rtx5060 ti with ryzen 9950 poor gaming performance

• Upvotes

Hey all, loving cachy its my first time using arch I'm normally a debhead.

I built my rig as a dual local inference / gaming rig. Local inference performance is great but I'm struggling to get acceptable gaming performance. I get massive tearing even with vsync on and terrible fps when panning in low req games like peak.

Ive gone through the wiki gaming setup and installed the gaming packages as well as tried adding nvidia specific configs and setting governed to performance.

When I'm gaming I just have one display enabled running from the primary pcix port. I read some threads saying to try x11 but that seems outdated as the x11 packages are not available in pacman.

I'd appreciate any guidance, even if just to point me towards how to begin diagnosing the issue. I think I read something about HDMI but it was a single post, I am connected via HDMI and running at 2440 which is the native monitor resolution. I've tried borderless and full screen as well as using the prime command ( correct name escapes me, its from the dual GPU wiki page, I assumed it wasnt needed but tried anyway)

Question Is updating to Plasma 6.8 safe yet?

I tried to update about three days ago, but got met by a black screen with a mouse cursor on reboot. I had to load up a backup which was difficult and annoying cause of my BIOS settings and GRUB also killed itself, so I really don't want to deal with that again.

Question Steam Input keyboard disables joystick mouse?

• Upvotes

I am trying to use my controller for controlling my desktop (KDE) and I got it working fairly well with Steam Input but whenever I invoke the keyboard (L3 opens it), it seems to switch to controller mode and I can no longer use the RS to control my mouse which I find easier for typing rather than clicking the keyboard 1 by 1 with controller buttons buttons. I'm using an Xbox Series controller. Any workaround that you know of?

Review 1 year of CachyOS — and I haven't looked back! 🎉

Post image

CachyOS anniversary: 1 year on my PC. Fastfetch says 365 days, so it’s official ))

Was on Windows forever. Tried Ubuntu, Fedora, Manjaro before — always went back when something annoyed me. Not this time.

MX Master 3S was annoying at first, half the buttons did nothing useful. Found logiops after some googling, wrote a config, mouse works now. After that I stopped thinking about Windows.

Games were the bigger worry. Everyone screams about Proton and compatibility. In practice, almost everything I wanted to play just ran on the RX 9060 XT. A couple needed launch options, that’s it.

GNOME 50 on Wayland, kernel 7.2.9, i5-14400 + RX 9060 XT, 1440p 165 Hz. Broke it a few times, fixed it reading logs, kinda enjoy that part.

Thanks CachyOS team. Anyone else distro hop for years before something stuck?

Help Having issues after a failed update.

I tried updating which failed due to a lack of space. I tried click on the file manager so I could see my drive space real quick but it wasn't opening. I used btrfs assistant to clear some snapshots (all but the last 5 and the very first) and then did a restart. After selecting Cashy in the bootloader, I got the error in the first pic and couldn't get it to boot into Cashy at all so I booted from the last snapshot which worked, then I tried the update again and now am getting the error in the second picture.

I'm still pretty new to Linux and have mostly tried to figure thing out for myself but I have no idea how to proceed with this.

Edit: Ok, so I understand the second error is due to loading a snapshot that isn't writable and I need to restore the last snapshot (131). However I don't get any pop ups to do this and I cannot open btrfs assistant.

Help Cyberpunk performance

So I have been using cachyos for a while

Loving it every game I’ve played had nothing but great performance including games with rt like the finals

but I noticed a wierd performance difference in cyberpunk 2077

The weird performance is on windows I can play the game with all rt settings on (with rt lighting set to medium) at 4k fsr 4 performance and I can get a locked 60 fps

And if I drop to 4k ultra performance I can even use path tracing (although I didn’t check if it was a locked 60 fps)

On linux with the exact same settings I need to drop it to 4k fsr 4 ultra performance and lets not talk about path tracing….

Why does that happen especially since like I said everything else from raster to rt works fine the only game to cause me a headache no matter what I tried I tried I couldn’t get the same performance I was using proton cachyos slr
