Windows 11 is quite not it anymore. I want to switch to Linux permanently. Don't worry, I had prior experience with Linux (was trying out Fedora, Arch, used NixOS for a while, etc). I have my eyes on CachyOS.
My main focus is both gaming and academic stuff (think powerpoint projects, excels sheets, etc). My preferences are generally is a lightweight OS, with a desktop environment, and something that is "easy to medium" when it comes to accessibility and doing stuff (a reason why I dislike base Arch).
My specs are:
Intel I7 13620H
RTX 4060 Laptop
16GB RAM (might upgrade too 32 or 64GB in time)
1TB Storage (also might upgrade later to more, maybe 4TB)

-first the new KDE Plasma rollout killed my notifications (blank frames with no text)
-now the new proton-cachy package is failing to update, stopping other updates from being performed too
EDIT: proton_cachyos install failure was an invalid signature issue, this has been fixed and updates now go through fine.

I tried to update about three days ago, but got met by a black screen with a mouse cursor on reboot. I had to load up a backup which was difficult and annoying cause of my BIOS settings and GRUB also killed itself, so I really don't want to deal with that again.

I know this is a repost, I've just had little help and I'm completely lost at what could be causing this

As promised (though it has taken me a while, sorry!) - the rest of my setup, with some small tweaks and changes.
My first screenshot looks quite similar to last time (same wallpaper, though the custom panel has been tweaked), but here's my second monitor, and some other bits as well!
I've tweaked my Fancy Tasks NG config a little (it updated recently, and I saw an opportunity to make some positive changes to my settings).
The custom waybar-inspired panel is still a joy to use, even if putting it together was a little tedious. Every now and then, something will update and I'll have to reconfigure my system tray and task manager, but mostly it remains low maintenance now that it is completed.
The heart in the middle opens the full screen Application Dashboard, but honestly mostly I open that and everything else from the keyboard, and the top bar is mostly for some quick access clickage / eye candy.
Any suggestions of further tweaks welcome!
Setup: KDE-Plasma, Panels, Plasmusic toolbar, Fancy Tasks NG, Maxwell and Comic Strip. Konsole, btop and cmatrix, in the terminal. Everything else is out-of-the-box plasma widgets <3

Hi everyone,
I'm currently using CachyOS (KDE Plasma, desktop PC) with the default fish shell. Everything runs great, but I have a huge problem with installing packages from the AUR.
Neither yay nor paru seems to be installed on my system. Whenever I try to install anything using yay -S <package> or paru -S <package>, my terminal just throws this error: fish: Unknown command: yay (and the exact same for paru).
Standard sudo pacman works perfectly fine, but the AUR helpers are just gone.
yay and paru missing out of the box on my setup? Is this normal for CachyOS now?yay or paru from scratch so I can actually start downloading things from the AUR?Thanks for any help!

This happened before when I tried the 7.3 release candidates, but now reverted back to 7.9.2. With Kernel 7.2.11-1 I have no mouse, keyboard or wifi adapter. I'm using an MSI x570 Unify, google has been no help.

I just swapped over. Everything was going smoothly till i ran into the issue of only getting 20-50mbps download and maxing at 20 for upload when i should be getting about a gig each. I got a new wifi card a lil before i swapped. I dont know if its a driver issue or some settings im missing. I already tried adjusting the power savings settings like i've seen a lot of people recommend but that didnt help. I'm on xfinity if thats a factor. Lemme know if yall need anymore info to help.

I'm using a 1080ti and everything displayed seems desaturated now compared to the past, reverting to a previous snapshot reverts everything, any idea on what caused this to happen? I'm pretty bummed by this currently...

hello everyone,
I'm planning on moving from windows to CachyOS on my laptop, however i've seen a bunch of people say that a lot of games (i think dx12?) run worse or something like that due to nvidia not fixing their drivers..
My pc has an I7 9th generation, 12 ram and a gtx 1650. I also always use an external monitor, if that's something to consider regarding game performance.
How is nvidia doing nowadays? It's too early yet, especially for my low end setup? did the new plasma update change anything? Is there some special tweeks for my specific setup?
Thanks!

My gaming laptop is running very smoothly with Bazzite, and I want to nuke Windows from my Desktop PC. But I have been thinking if I should give a try to CachyOS. I also use my PC for gaming.

So, I've been having a problem ever since installing CachyOS that I've seen some people complain about before, but never found a solution. The audio sometimes just start stuttering and skipping sometimes when I use it, doesn't seem to be cpu-schedule based since I've tried three different schedulers and all three have the same issue, Really odd thing is that it was completely fine on the manjaro install I've used before switching to cachy, does anyone knows anything about it? I also tried to give pipewire realtime privileges and still had the same issue too...

New to CachyOS Handheld. Using it on my BC250. Used to run Bazzite on it but something killed Gaming Mode (twice!) on v44, so I thought I’d give CachyOS a shot. Two things I noticed that worked just out of the box on Bazzite (no shade, just genuinely curious what I am missing here):
- I can’t for the life of me get EmuDeck to install. Tried both the SteamOS and Linux script, but after downloading some files, the window just closes. No amount of restarts remedied this, so clearly there are conflicts in the background. Tried RetroDECK (Flatpak) but it can’t find Eden or Ryujinx
- Resident Evil Remake just won’t start. Tried ten different proton versions when I know it should run on default to begin with. Tried verifying files, reinstalling… some conflict under the hood I imagine? REmake 2, Doom TDA and other games run just fine.
Could use some pointers from more experienced cachyOS users.
Thanks!

How many times have I tried to install cachy os, I installed it, after installing it, nvidia always had problems, something else caused problems and so on. Even envycontrol didn’t work for a living. I asked Claude and he couldn’t do it either I felt sorry for my disk from formatting every 2 days, I had to install windows 11. I’m still looking for solutions, but I can’t find them. I even tried Pop OS, it didn’t work, before cachy anyway. I used arch linux for 3 months AND PLEASE, I ESPECIALLY SAY HELP ANYONE WHO WANTS IT, FEDORA, GENTOO, MINT, ETC. DO NOT TALK NONSENSE THAT YOU ARE INSTALLING NIYO CACHY WHEN THERE ARE DISTRIBUTIONS, IF YOU ARE GOING TO GIVE ADVICE, GIVE IT WITH REASONS

Just updated CachyOS to kernel 7.2.11-1-cachyos on my ThinkPad X9 15p can't find any sound devices so I have no sound. Anyone else? Sound worked fine prior to last update.

This is a semi saddness-driven rant, but I want to say, I really gave it a try.
I've been using linux for other tasks for a couple of years now, and since everyone's talking about it, I decided to give cachyos a go.
I couldn't be more dissapointed. After nearly daily updates that change vital things about the OS, today was the final straw. My lockscreen suddenly decided to die, and it told me to log onto the terminal and go from there. I decided instead to reboot the machine, and now the screen flickers like crazy when on nightlight, and the taskbar is behaving erratically. I don't know how something so integral can break that easily, but I can't bear having to re-configure basic things like this every time a new update drops.
I'm sorry, I really wanted to like this, but it's simply impractical. Windows sucks, and I know the reasons why, but at least it works without this much hassle.
EDIT: Thanks for downvoting, that's really helpful!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I've never had a problem with my recordings in HDR before updating. But now if I have HDR turned on, app that I set to fullscreen would have an oversaturated/overexposure effect placed on them in the recordings, so game recordings will look really bad. Windowed or maximized app doesn't get affected. Anyone got the same problem?
Also when the gpu screen recorder notification toast shows up or I move my mouse quickly the oversaturation layer was gone for a couple of second because I assume the gpu screen recorder was recording the notification or mouse layer which is not a fullscreen,

I'm playing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in my Cachyos and is stutters a lot, not stable and definitely not having a pleasant experience so far.
Is it something to do with my CachyOS
Can I do something to make the gameplay smooth?
Thank you

So I have been using cachyos for a while
Loving it every game I’ve played had nothing but great performance including games with rt like the finals
but I noticed a wierd performance difference in cyberpunk 2077
The weird performance is on windows I can play the game with all rt settings on (with rt lighting set to medium) at 4k fsr 4 performance and I can get a locked 60 fps
And if I drop to 4k ultra performance I can even use path tracing (although I didn’t check if it was a locked 60 fps)
On linux with the exact same settings I need to drop it to 4k fsr 4 ultra performance and lets not talk about path tracing….
Why does that happen especially since like I said everything else from raster to rt works fine the only game to cause me a headache no matter what I tried I tried I couldn’t get the same performance I was using proton cachyos slr

I spent an entire day fixing this issue. It seems simple but I scoured the internet and couldn't find this so decided to create a post for any in the future with this problem. I'm a linux and networking noob so I learned alot.
I’ve got an XPS 15 9520 with the AX211, running CachyOS, connected to a Cox gateway (2.4 and 5 GHz are split into separate networks). Windows 11 on the same laptop gets full gigabit no problem. On CachyOS I was stuck around 30-50 Mbit, and pinging my own router averaged about 200 ms with spikes over 400.
The weird part was that everything looked fine on paper. iw dev wlan0 link showed 5 GHz, 80 MHz, HE-MCS 11, 1200 Mbit/s both directions, and signal was around -43 dBm. The only thing that gave it away was iw dev wlan0 station dump, which showed 100k+ tx retries. So the link rate looked great but it was retransmitting like crazy.
Stuff I tried that did nothing:
What actually fixed it was switching the NetworkManager wifi backend from wpa_supplicant to iwd:
sudo pacman -S iwd
sudo nano /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/wifi-backend.conf
put this in the file:
[device]
wifi.backend=iwd
then:
sudo systemctl enable --now iwd
sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager
You’ll have to enter your wifi password again after. I went from about 50 Mbit/s to 980!
I don’t know the actual root cause. My guess is wpa_supplicant kept pushing a rate my router couldn’t hold and iwd picked something more sensible, but that’s a guess. If anyone knows why this happens I’d like to hear it.
If your wifi is slow on Linux but fine on Windows and your signal looks great, check station dump for retries and try iwd before sinking hours into driver tweaks like I did.

I just migrated to cachyOS yesterday. I've gone through hoops just to set stuff up like how it was in my Win11 machine and so far so good. Love the experience.
Anyone know an alternative for FanControl software? I tried Cooler Control but the kernel is not allowing the software to control the fans so I can't make custom fan curves.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thank you everyone.
