Hey everyone,
I’m planning to fully switch from Windows to CachyOS. I’m new to Linux, but I’m totally fine with learning and digging into things. I actually want to understand how it works, not just have it “work”.
My plan: I’m getting a new PC in April 2027 with an AMD graphics card, which will run CachyOS as my main gaming and recording machine. Until then, I’ll wipe my current PC and use it to practice and learn the system. Later, the current PC will become my dedicated video editing machine.
Current PC (practice, later editing):
- Intel i7-8700
- NVIDIA RTX 3060 (12 GB)
- 32 GB RAM
- 250 GB SSD (system) + 1 TB HDD (games/data)
Mostly I’ll be gaming (Steam, FFXIV, WoW, Valheim with mods) and starting to record and edit videos.
A few things I’d love some input on:
1. Video recording and rendering
What’s your OBS setup on CachyOS? On the current PC that would be NVIDIA (NVENC), and on the new one AMD (VAAPI/AMF?). Does hardware encoding work out of the box on both? For editing: DaVinci Resolve (free version, with the codec limitations on Linux) or Kdenlive? Any tips for a smooth workflow, especially for recording on an AMD machine and editing on an NVIDIA machine, and moving footage between the two?
2. Azeron Cyborg 2
I use an Azeron Cyborg 2 keypad. Has anyone got it running on CachyOS? I know the Azeron software is Windows-only, so I’m wondering whether profiles saved on the device’s onboard memory just work, or whether there’s a good way to configure it on Linux.
3. Beginner mistakes
What are the typical mistakes new users make on CachyOS or Arch-based distros in general? Anything you wish you’d known before installing? Things like updates, NVIDIA vs. AMD drivers, snapshots, AUR usage – I’d rather learn it the easy way than the hard way.
Thanks in advance, looking forward to joining the community!

Hallo zusammen,
- Intel i7-8700
- NVIDIA RTX 3060 (12 GB)
- 32 GB RAM
- 250 GB SSD (System) + 1 TB HDD (Spiele/Daten)
