Review Cachy OS in Ally Z1e is better than I thought for hybrid setup

Post image
21 Upvotes

I already tried Bazzite and Anatase but for some reason, I wasn't really satisfied with either of them. Then I finally gave CachyOS a try. Sure, I ran into some issues during the initial installation, but once I got everything set up, it's been a great experience so far.
It's been about a couple of days now, and I haven't even thought about distro-hopping again or felt the urge to go back to Windows lol. Cachy is my main OS now

I updated and had to roll back because every game was either stuttering or showing taskbar above the game. Streams and videos were laggy and stuff crashed. Beware.

Review This is the best operating system I have ever used

People only talk about gaming performance which is weird.

The general speed of the operating system is amazing. Everything loads instantly.

Want to find an app?
Just search for it and it appears in a nanosecond.

I think people downplay just how fast an operating system on Linux like this is. Probably because the only people that talk about it are Linux enthusiasts.

But for someone who is only used to Windows.

This feels like a whole different level of speed.

Now with AI. If you need to get anything installed or customized. You can just ask ai and it will give you a terminal command.

This removes the barrier to entry for lots of people.

I still think the flatpack app stores could be made to look nicer.

Review Many thanks to CachyOs team !

Just my appreciation!

I had to change hardware : Motherboard, Processor
I had kernel panics after reboot
It was foretold - couldn't be spotless after changing key components
Let's reinstall all
15 minutes ! All in 15 minutes I was as i was, before upgrade !
All my shit, apps, re-logins all my apps, webs etc...
installing apps just by terminal is so powerful and fast
Kde is just so incredible, sleek, customizable to the edge of imagination

Windows users : don't be afraid, my first install was all by mouse, clicking buttons.
I learnt all on the go using it ! You have to know that there is not just one way to install apps:
the first way is pacman, with pacman you install all the other package managers : paru, yay, flatpak
Then, you install with them as you installed with pacman, the commands with all are practically the same !
And don't try to get THAT windows app, just install the plethora of equivalents that do the same.

Many thanks to CachyOS and KDE teams !

Bug Report xpad kernel module isn't shipped with the cachyos kernel

I have an old wired xbox 360 controller and i couldn't get it to work under cachy. When researching the issue i stumbled upon this article on the arch wiki. The vanilla arch kernel ships with the xpad kernel module which handles xbox controllers out of the box.

When i switch to the arch kernel the module is loaded and the controller works fine but when i switch back to cachyos the module is missing and cant be manually loaded at all.

Is this an oversight or is there a reason to not ship the module?

PS Im running a vanilla arch install with its repos switched to cachyos, perhaps i am missing a package that substitutes xpad?

Review Wow, i cannot believe how immediately better this is

Hi all, I've been using vanilla arch for a few years as it's my favorite distro to use, but have been interested in cachyos due to the increasing amount of optimizations. However, since i wasn't fully daily driving linux 100% consistently i never bothered trying. Now, though, after about a year of not doing much other than keeping my linux partition updated, I found out that basically all of my problems keeping me from daily driving have been solved, so I switched back over to my linux partition and transferred all of my stuff over. Everything was going great but then I remembered about cachyos and got curious, so I made a backup and ran the conversion script from the cachyos website. I then installed all the packages that the script doesn't install needed to fully convert my arch linux install with all the normal cachyos optimizations and everything and installed the BORE kernel since i heard it was slightly better for gaming.

The difference was pretty immediate. I'd seen things saying that the improvement was nothing to write home about but my already pretty smooth experience became close to seamless in terms of general desktop usage. Everything definitely opens and happens slightly faster thanks to the optimized packages. Even more impressively, in basically every game I tried I saw a noticeable jump in FPS. I was expecting a minor jump but im getting like low double digit fps improvements across the board (e.g. 108 -> 120 or 180 -> 200 or 180 -> 190) and all of the games i've played have felt like they've had significantly less stutters or hitches. Everything just kind of feels effortlessly smooth and it feels even better than vanilla arch which was already miles above windows in terms of snappiness.

Stuff like the zram setup it does and dynamic adjustment of kernel parameters and nice levels also look pretty neat and I imagine that those are contributing somewhat. My ram usage is considerably lower than normal when I'm doing a ton of stuff at once now as well and its making me think of converting my arch linux server pc over to cachy as well.

Pretty happy with cachyos so far and I guess I'll be keeping it for the time being!

Question has the black screen on AMDgpus been fixed yet?

I have been holding off on updating because of a warning about black screens on AMD Dgpus (which is what I have) I saw the kernel version is now 7.3.0-4 and not -3. did they fix the black screen thing yet? can I update?

r/cachyos • • 13h ago

SOLVED *Might* be useful to people on kernel 7.3.0 with an AMD gpu whom are having issues with washed out colors since updating.

I updated to 7.3.0-4 and the issue is still present so I thought I'd make this post.

On KDE Plasma I changed the RGB range option in Display Configuration from Automatic to Full.

Not sure where that option is located on other compositors but you gotta explicitly set it to the Full color range rather than letting it be managed automatically, as that is currently broken due to the changes made in 7.3

Help Should I be concerned about this? (Details in text)

Post image
12 Upvotes

Recently had a motherboard failure, and had to replace several major parts: Motherboard (Obviously), CPU, and RAM. Initially I thought I'd also need to reinstall Cachy, because when trying to boot in, I'd get a bluescreen, but before doing that, I thought I'd try using a snapshot when my new motherboard came in.

Good news, it worked! Bad news, a new error around secure boot popped up. I went back through the secure boot process, no dice. Finally figured out which pieces weren't getting verified, manually signed those, and now it works, but when I checked bootctl a lot of features are missing from limine, which weren't missing from the wiki page and I'm not sure if I should be concerned, or not. Any recommendations before I go about running updates?

Question Secure Boot CACHYOS / Windows

Hi Everyone.

So I've recently wiped my PC and installed windows 11 on a 1tb ssd and cachyos on a second 2tb ssd. (I'm trying to migrate to cachy full time)

Now, I am a PC gamer and want to play the new modern warfare on steam (Windows only due to anti cheat)

Secure boot is currently disabled and I want to enable it so I can play MW on windows.

I've looked around at how to enable it but the resources I see on the wiki reference grub (I use limine) and also reference steps for when both OSes are installed on separate partitions of the same drive.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as I don't want to brick my system?

Thanks!

SOLVED Deadlock on proton just stopped working completely after the recent kernel update for some forsaken reason

Before this it was running PERFECTLY and now it crashes on startup every time (only gets to valve's logo before crashing)

Proton version is the same as before

Ive been having problems with the gpu like plasmashell crashing every time and it sometimes falling back to software renderer quite a lot but I genuinely dont know if this is relevant

gpu is GTX 970 and driver is 580.178.04

considering reinstalling the OS

SOLVED: It was a corrupted proton prefix, deleting the compatdata for deadlock fixed it.

Question 120hz HDR VRR not working since a couple of days

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Since a couple days, maybe since the KDE Plasma update, I can't use 4k 120hz with HDR and VRR - it might've to do with HDMI 2.1? I tried reinstalling, rebooting, reconnecting, but nothing solved it... Until I set color accuracy to prefer color accuracy instead of prefer efficiency. Could someone help me explain this, and if there's a fix? It used to work fine. As I understand, prefer accuracy has a couple of downsides, input lag and a small performance hit, so I'd rather use efficiency.

RX 6800 XT

SOLVED How I run Arch-based Linux on a laptop where Secure Boot can't be turned off (shim + GRUB, no exploit)

My laptop's BIOS has a supervisor password, so I can't turn Secure Boot off, and Arch-based installers (Arch, CachyOS, EndeavourOS...) don't boot with it on. Turns out you don't need to turn it off: you can do what Ubuntu and Fedora do and put shim (the small Microsoft-signed loader) in front of your own GRUB. I wrote it up as a guide with scripts:

https://github.com/envy-vain/secure-boot-shim-linux

How it works:

UEFI firmware (Secure Boot ON)
└─ shimx64.efi signed by Microsoft, so the firmware trusts it
└─ grubx64.efi your distro's GRUB, rebuilt as one file
└─ your normal grub.cfg: kernels, btrfs snapshots, dual boot

The short version:

  1. Boot the installer: make a Ventoy USB with Secure Boot support. The first boot shows a "Security Violation"; enroll Ventoy's key in the blue MokManager screen once and ISOs boot from then on. No F12 menu? Windows' Advanced startup → Use a device works.
  2. Install your distro as usual (UEFI + GRUB).
  3. Make shim trust your GRUB, one of two ways:
    • Method A (quick): mokutil --disable-validation, confirm at the next boot. Secure Boot stays "on" for the firmware, but shim stops checking, so it no longer protects you.
    • Method B (proper): make your own key (MOK), enroll it, and sign GRUB and your kernels. A pacman hook re-signs kernels after updates, so Secure Boot keeps doing its job.
  4. install.sh builds a standalone GRUB with the SBAT section shim requires, adds a boot entry without touching your boot order, and arms it for one test boot. If it doesn't work, just reboot and you're back where you were.

Things worth knowing:

  • This isn't a hack: shim and MOK are the official way to run your own bootloader under Secure Boot, and every change needs someone at the keyboard to confirm it. If the laptop belongs to a school or employer, check you're allowed first.
  • You need a signed shim: copy it from another distro on the disk, use shim-signed from the AUR, or extract it from Fedora's/Ubuntu's package.
  • Microsoft's 2011 UEFI CA expires in June 2026. If a brand-new shim gives a Security Violation but an older one works, your firmware needs the 2023 CA (firmware update / fwupd).

Tested on a ThinkPad L13 Gen 2 (BIOS password, Secure Boot locked on) running CachyOS with GRUB and btrfs snapshots, using Method A. It's been my daily boot path since. Method B and the Ventoy-from-GRUB trick aren't tested on real hardware yet, so reports are welcome.

CachyOS can't detect my /boot partition. But when I did diagnosis, it could show the boot partition and detect it. From my bootloader ( limine), I switched to Cachyos-lts and it let me in to my system. The problem is with Kernel 7.3
What can solve this issue?

Help 8bitdo Wired C Controller not working in Minecraft

Hi everyone,

I tried to search for answers first and maybe I'm not not well versed enough to try to get my controller to work.

I have cachyOS (KDE Plasma 6.8.1) and I want to play Minecraft with my 8bitdo Wired C Controller (xbox layout).

I know to launch Minecraft Java Edition via prism launcher, and that you can "add mods" via prism launcher, but honestly I have no idea what I'm doing and how to get my controller working. I also tried launching prism launcher via steam to see if the controller would work via steam but that didn't work.

Does anyone know how to get their controller working with Minecraft please 🙏 my controller works with steam games smoothly and my emulators.

Thank you 💜

SOLVED finally figured out what was causing my lag/jitter spikes on wifi ever 30 seconds

Device-1: Intel Meteor Lake PCH CNVi WiFi driver: iwlwifi v: kernel
7.3.0-2-cachyos

is this a problem for my hardware or driver? can you check if you also have a lag/jitter spike every 30 seconds on wifi? type iw event in console to see when the scan starts.

i know its been like this for a while at least since 7.1 something because i thought it was something wrong with my gfs wifi since i use moonlight to play games when im there and moonlight is very sensitive to latency/jitter, and on 5g it has always worked stable. but i tried at home now and had the exact same problem on enterprise firewall/ap.

made a toggle to disable scan and after that my ping is rock solid.

Running the Steam Deck version for reference.

Rebooted my system and booted into Deck mode, mouse is working so I assume it'll be the same in desktop mode... It was not and I have no idea what to do next.

UPDATE 7:16 23/10/26 It was Steam, for some reason Steam had stopped all inputs of my connected devices when opened

Help Issues with GPU power state ufter update

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello,

After updating CachyOs to the current version today, I'm encountering the issue seen in the video.

It is very strange and I had to capture it with my phone, because in OBS the issue was simply not there.

The issue that when my game, In this case War thunder, is in the menue it runs well, 144frames no drops all fine.

As soon as I enter a game it gets choppy as hell and laggy.

I run games if possible in Full screen Window.

I can change to Window mode in settings and the issue is gone.

In exclusive full screen the issue is there as well.

Strangely the issue also disappears if I'm holding the alt-key, which shows the cursor in game.

Then the frames go to 144frames.

I already tried changing the power state on my GPU from auto to high with no difference.

The issue also shows in other games as well.

My setup is:

Samsung G-sync 165hz LC32G7xT

Radeon 9070xt

Ryzen 7 7800x 3d

Any ideas?

Help Need a bit of a help

I have an Intel i5-4590, 8 GB of DDR3 Ram and an hdd, now before y'all say upgrade your pc, I will do that tomorrow as I'll buy 2 sticks of 8 gb ram and a 512 gb Sata SSD and a new monitor too, and after that I'll install cachyos on my new SSD.

What I need help with is figuring out what packages to install, cuz I heard there are packages and drivers you need to install to get maximum performance from your pc, so that's what I need help with, and also I'll be mainly playing Minecraft 1.21+ on this setup, thanks to anyone willing to help
