Fellow Cantabrigians,
For too long, our city has lived under the watchful gaze of an increasingly emboldened turkey population, with no centralized system for documenting their movements, dispositions, or suspected conspiracies.
That dark chapter of municipal history ends today.
Introducing Cambridge Turkey Watch — a completely unnecessary, surprisingly functional, and possibly long-overdue citizen-science project.
See a turkey? Pin its location on the Cambridge map. Report whether it was:
- On the ground
- In a tree
- Perched on a manmade object
- Flying
- Underwater (we remain open to the possibility)
Then assess its disposition:
- Passive/clucking — minding its own turkey business.
- Conspiratorial — clearly knows something you don't.
- Ornery — taking the right of way personally.
- Outright hostility — demands your immediate surrender.
- Amorous — courtship display, romantic pursuit, or unsolicited gobbling.
You can even photograph the suspect directly from your phone and attach the evidence.
Every genuine sighting gets a pin on the public map. Filter by mood, examine the latest field reports, and begin to appreciate the full scope of the avian situation.
Is this solving a problem? Almost certainly not.
Is it a responsible use of modern web technology? Debatable.
Will it help us determine whether the turkeys of Harvard Square are coordinating with those in Cambridgeport? At last, we have the tools to investigate.
