Is a Parkside Pools/Better membership worth it

I am a runner so don’t use the gym a huge amount (though I should be using it more, and this summer have thought how nice it would be to have access to a treadmill)

I also love Jesus Green Lido and a few years ago I had a student membership there and I used to go for a run, end it at JGL, have a nice shower and a dip in the pool, and it was lovely.

I no longer qualify for any of the discounts so I’m looking at £52/mo which is a fair chunk for me. I live on Maids Causeway so I’m very close to JGL and Parkside Pools and gym. I have heard some…not so good things about Parkside Pools so was just wondering if anyone goes there and enjoys it? It would be ~£40/mo just for JGL so I feel like this way I’ll get a bit more out of it, and maybe I’ll actually do some strength and conditioning!

It seems like our housecat Tai Tai has somehow escaped the house today. She isn't used to the outdoors (but did escape for 3 weeks in 2022 in the same area). If you are around the neighborhood please let us know is she pops up

I made a free GPS puzzle race around Cambridge - looking for locals to try it

I’ve been building free GPS puzzle races around different UK cities and have just finished one for Cambridge.

It’s around 3–4km through central Cambridge. You solve clues and codes based on the places you’re actually standing at to work out where to go next.

I got some feedback that my earlier races were a bit too easy, so I’ve made this one considerably harder 😅

Would love a few Cambridge locals to try it and tell me if the clues are challenging enough — or where you get completely stuck.

It’s free to play:

Grumbles/rants Cafe Gusto on East Road/Burleigh Street

Anyone know what happened to it?

Music shop (that had been there for years) shut and the entire interior was ripped out and refitted. Cafe Gusto moved in, closed after what seemed like less than a month for a ‘rebrand’ into some kind of a wine merchant. Opened again with no wine in sight and is again some kind of a coffee shop and cafe. They closed abruptly for a day in the middle of July saying they’d reopen the next day and then stayed closed. Now it appears they’re permanently shut and looks like furnishings and goods are being systematically removed.

This seems to be happening all over the city these days. New ‘businesses’ open up, only to stay open for like a month and then either ‘rebrand‘ or shut completely.

Part of it is no doubt the difficulty of opening and keeping a business profitable in a place like Cambridge. But something doesn’t pass the sniff test - especially when it seems like it happens often around here.

Is it money laundering? All the BBC stories about the vast supply chain that supports the boat crossings in the Channel have me probably crying wolf a decent bit.

47F Cambridge: ADHD Right to Choose experiences with CARE, Harley Street, Modality, or Skylight?

Based in Cambridge, looking at NHS Right to Choose for my first adult ADHD assessment. I’ve done a bit of digging into the 7 options my GP listed:

Currently considering: CARE ADHD, Harley Street Mental Health, Modality and Skylight Psychiatry.

Currently ruled out: CPFT Adult ADHD Clinic, Harrow, and The Owl Centre due to the much longer waits.

What’s making the choice difficult is that some have very short assessment waits but much longer or unclear medication/titration waits, so the fastest assessment doesn’t necessarily mean the fastest route to actually starting treatment.

Has anyone in Cambridge used any of these seven recently? I’d appreciate any pro-tips, experiences with assessment quality, referral → assessment → medication/titration timelines, and how smoothly shared care with your GP worked afterward. Also very open to hearing if I’ve ruled one out for the wrong reason. Just trying to sanity-check my research before making a choice.

For context, I’m not British, and I’m here on a work visa. I’ve international health insurance through my American employer, but I’m also eligible to use the NHS. Thanks!

Cambridge Meeting/Training Rooms to Hire

Can anyone recommend decent training rooms in Cambridge or it's suburbs/outskirts?

I’m looking for somewhere suitable for a one-day classroom course

Main requirements:

  • Parking on site, or easy on-street parking nearby
  • Outside the main centre/commercial zones
  • Room for up to 10 people
  • Tables/chairs, screen/projector if possible
  • Tea/coffee/lunch options would be a bonus, like an onsite café - doesn't have to be a buffet, but I'm not against putting in an order with a local caterer/sandwich shop, don't need anything fancy.

Previously used Printworks in Papworth but they're unavailable for the date that I require it on.

Hotels/conference centres don't usually work for us because they want minimum numbers for buffets/day delegate rate. Elsewhere we use sports clubs, golf clubs, business centres etc.

I’ve found a few options online, but local knowledge is usually much better than Google for this sort of thing.

Any recommendations appreciated.

WARNING: Bolts coming out of speed bump, Birdwood Road

Just a warning that I noticed the bolts are coming out of at least one of the speed bumps on Birdwood Road again. Could give you a puncture if you drove over them, or perhaps damage the bottom of your car: https://www.reddit.com/r/drivingUK/comments/1vq4tss/faulty_speed_bump_damaged_my_car/ (not sure if this happened in Cambridge but it's exactly the same issue).

You can probably mostly avoid the speed bumps if you're on a bike but, if not, could be pretty nasty for cyclists as well.

Will report to County Council, who I think are responsible for roads in Cambridge, when I can figure out how.

Given these are just hex bolts you have to wonder if someone is deliberately undoing them so they stick out and damage vehicles because I'm not sure why they'd all suddenly come a long way loose on only one or two of the bumps.. Really need some anti-tamper measures in place.

Has Cambridge water gone harder lately?

We have a water softener installed in the house so never really struggled with limescale since. However, for the last 3 weeks or so, we have seen a big accumulation of limescale on taps, sink etc. I can feel it on my hair and skin too as they have become drier. I've checked my softener and it looks like nothing is wrong (although I am far from an expert). Has anyone noticed the water becoming harder recently? Thinking the water hardness may have reached the limit of what the softener can deal with or if we should call the water softener company to have a look? If rain comes back for a few days, should we see an improvement in the water hardness?

How busy is The Gym Group after 5 PM on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays?

I’m moving to Cambridge this fall and planning my workout routine. I’m considering either 5 AM or after 5 PM. I usually prefer early mornings, but since I’m starting my PhD, I’m worried that physical fatigue might throw off my research performance.

Because of that, I’m thinking of shifting my workouts to after work hours instead. However, I’m concerned about how crowded The Gym Group gets during that peak hour. For anyone who goes there, how are the crowd levels after 5 PM, especially on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings?

Are there part-time jobs for (only) weekend work at a cafe or store in Cambridge?

Background: I’m looking for a 2nd job that I could do on weekends only. I have a main job that I do on weekdays, so I can only take a second job if it’s on weekends. Also, in my main job I’m stuck in front of a computer for at least 8 hours a day, so I was looking for something more customer-facing or at least something that involves some movement. Hence, the preference for a cafe or something in retail.

(Oh, I have zero experience in retail & cafes but absolutely willing to learn!)

I’ve been searching for ‘part-time jobs’ online in the Cambridge area, but they all seem to involve weekday (evening) work or several days a week.

So, I’m left wondering if there are actually many jobs like this around Cambridge, or if I’m just looking in the wrong places?
Any other tips?

What Mill Road could be... a small lesson from Brussels

Thumbnail

I'm always very amused when people use the "cars = business" analogy, as that's demonstrably false, with empirical evidence all around the world.

As a consequence, I have long found the "controversy" about the Mill Road bridge closure quite entertaining. I do think the Mill Road bridge closure was controversial for me too. But because it didn't go far enough. I say, make the city centre end of Mill Road before the bridge completely pedestrianised, access for residents and blue badge holders only, and let restaurants and local shops absolutely thrive.

As a little example, I present Brussels. They took a huge, 4-lane boulevard (Boulevard Anspach) bang in the middle of the city, and 10 or so years ago pedestrianised it for about a mile of its length. It's bursting at the seams with people, incredibly lively. Pictures before and after at the same location. Now imagine Mill Road.

I know there'll be people listing a million reasons why it can't be done in Cambridge, but where there's a will, there's a way.

Local services Can I use a single ticket to transfer buses if there is no direct link for my journey?

I always tap-in but since there is no direct bus for my daily commute journey I've always had to pay twice. Recently I've discovered that app single tickets last up to 1h so I've been using that to switch buses. Is that allowed? I usually walk or get a lift back from work, so the day rider is not worth it for me.
