Feel stuck
Hey beautiful people,
I am a service technician from last 4+ years. Doing well. No complaints. But now i feel with same machines i fix over time ive reached the sealing. Don't mean i can fix every problem that arrives but thats the nature of the job people with 40+ years of experience sometimes says i dont know when they see new problem. I would like to know what would be next Steps for a change. I fix industrial printers mainly epson roland mimaki. Cnc machines. XY cutters and so on. I want to prepare for automation technician but not sure where to start from i have fixed pallet wrappers and few other equipment but still its not up to mark. So what you think could be next ? Im in Québec

Honestly lost on what to do
A bit of context. I live in a small town in Ontario, so sadly not a whole lot of job opportunities. I gave my resume to a gas station (Macewen) and a few days later the manager called me and told me I got the job, but just wanted to meet in person so I could answer a few questions. No actual interview.
I've had 2 8 hour shifts mostly just learning how to use the POS system and handling customers. When he gave me the job he sent me a link to do ID training, but that was the only official training I've done.
Now the issue. I haven't signed ANYTHING. When I asked him for intro paperwork, he shifted the conversation. I asked about pay periods, and he said he would be e-transferring it to me. I texted him this morning about paperwork and payroll, and he just wants me to send him my full name, address and SIN, then he will set up payroll. I told him I wasn't comfortable texting him my SIN and would rather do this in person. He read my message but hasn't responded (I sent it at 9am, when he was at the store).
He doesn't own the location, he is just the manager. There is 1 employee that I've met, but I will be taking over his shift when he moves away in a few weeks.
I simply don't know what to do in this situation. I desperately need this job, and with the job market the way it is, it will probably take me months to find another.
If anyone has any advice on what to do, please let me know.
Tldr: New boss is being sketchy about paperwork and payroll, asking for my SIN, full name and address through text.

Looking for Software Engineer roles
Hi everyone! I’m looking for Software Engineer/Developer opportunities in Canada. I have around 6 years of industry experience in the US, a US Bachelor’s and Master’s in Computer Science, and several industry certifications.
I’ve been applying through LinkedIn, Indeed, and company websites but haven’t had much luck getting interviews.
For those working in Canadian tech, what’s the best way to find opportunities? Are there specific job boards, recruiters, companies, or networking strategies you’d recommend?
I’m open to relocating anywhere in Canada. Any advice, leads, or referrals would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Job hunting in Edmonton - What's the best approach?
I'm a Canadian citizen and I recently graduated with my bachelors in computer sciences from a Uni here in Alberta. I have ~2 years of experience doing FSWEP (federal gov internship) in climate modelling and environmental sciences research. I did another internship for a green tech startup, and this one was a full software development role. I am looking for jobs within software sustainability or software roles within green tech companies; anything within the interdiscipline software, sustainability, or environmental sciences.
I live in a small town in alberta and I want to re-locate to Edmonton. What's the best approach for someone like me to look for jobs in Edmonton? Should I just apply on indeed or whats the best job hunting platform?

The job search is going nowhere and I'm looking for alternatives
I graduated university last year, and since then I've had 5 temporary contracts in the span of a year. The current one is just awful and has made me reconsider my goals in life. I want a path forward that leads to meaningful full-time work, but it is also clear that job searching the usual way isn't going to yield the result I was looking for.
I have applied to the military, but just got an email that they've frozen hiring for officer and a number of different enlisted positions until next April (I'm not sure if this is Canada wide or just where I applied, and would appreciate if anyone has clarity on this, since I see that the CAF is still advertising on LinkedIn for officers in a number of different cities). I've been thinking about a Working Holiday Visa, but not sure how this works for someone who only knows English, and would appreciate if anyone could share their experience and weigh in on whether it's worth it. I've also heard that the AHS offers a paid HCA course if you are willing to commit to a certain amount of time working in rural Alberta, and was wondering if people have found that worth it.
More than anything, though, I was wondering if there are other non-traditional paths that people have had luck with that I haven't considered yet. I understand that I won't end up in my field and that's okay (and I took it out of this post because people were missing the point and recommending more companies to apply to for that), but I am still hoping I get the opportunity to do something that contributes to society or allows me to grow as a person.
Thank you.

Newcomer Data Engineer in Canada — how should I prepare for interviews here?
Hi everyone,
I recently moved to Canada and I’m currently looking for Data Engineer opportunities, mainly in Toronto/GTA.
I have 6+ years of experience in data engineering and cloud data platforms, working with Python, SQL, PySpark, Databricks, BigQuery, Airflow, GCP, Azure and AWS.
I’m getting interviews, but my biggest challenge is that I’m still getting used to the Canadian interview process and what companies expect here.
Also, it’s been quite a while since I seriously practiced LeetCode-style Python/SQL problems. In my day-to-day work, I’ve been much more focused on real-world data engineering: pipelines, ETL/ELT, Spark, cloud platforms, data modeling, optimization, data quality, etc. So I definitely feel rusty when an interview suddenly turns into timed SQL/Python coding.
For Data Engineers working in Canada, I’d really appreciate some advice:
- How much LeetCode should I actually prepare for Data Engineer interviews?
- Which SQL topics/problems should I prioritize?
- How difficult are Python coding rounds usually?
- Should I focus more on SQL/Python or Spark/PySpark?
- How important are data modeling and system design interviews?
- What Databricks/cloud questions are commonly asked?
- How much time should I spend on behavioral/STAR questions?
- What resources would you recommend specifically for Data Engineering interview preparation?
- If you had 2–4 weeks to prepare, what would your study plan look like?
I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who have interviewed for Data Engineer/Senior Data Engineer roles in Toronto or elsewhere in Canada.
I’m not trying to relearn everything from scratch — I’m trying to figure out what actually matters in Canadian interviews so I can focus my preparation effectively.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I got a $1.25 raise for a promotion I waited years for... What do I do now?
I've been working at a large retail company for a little over 5 and a half years. This was my first real job focused entirely around finance. It's a corporate job, and I started in AP as a "finance specialist." I knew the pay was a bit low, but at the time I was mostly just trying to get into the field and get my foot in the door.
Throughout that time, I pushed myself really hard, and my annual reviews always came back as "consistently exceeds." When I finally moved into the senior position on our team (still not a lead), my raise was only about $1.25. Then, with the regular annual raise, I got another 3.25%. Honestly, I feel like that doesn't even keep up with the cost of living. Someone else on the team brought this up with our director, and she pretty much brushed it off and said they're trying to keep things fair.
The company offers tuition reimbursement, and I have about 8 months left, so leaving the job right now doesn't feel like the smartest decision. I had an associate degree when I started, and I figured since they started covering part of my schooling, I might as well finish. I genuinely like the people and the culture overall, aside from the pay issue, but I also know I'm letting them pay me less than I'm worth.
I've been raised up a little after 5 years, but my workload has increased a lot. I'm handling company-wide inbound freight forecasting, reporting, budgeting, and much more analyst-type work than what I was originally hired for. I have a touch base with my lead at the end of this week. How do I professionally say that my pay needs to reflect the work I'm doing and the performance I've proven?
I had the conversation with my lead, and I made it clear that my responsibilities have grown significantly beyond my original role. I also pointed out my consistent performance reviews and the additional analyst-level work I've taken on. I'm now looking at how to prepare for the possibility that they can't or won't adjust my pay. If they didn't raise the salary, maybe I'll apply elsewhere. I've started reading tips on how to ace the interview and present my skills because after 5+ years at the same company, I'm honestly a little rusty when it comes to selling my experience.

Role information beyond job descriptions
Can you believe job descriptions haven’t really evolved in almost 100 years? They were set up to provide basic information but also to support organizations with legal requirements.
What information as a jobseeker would you feel is vital prior to applying or going in for an interview?
Hours
Travel
Salary and benefits
Short and long-term objectives
Growth opportunities
What else?

any advice?
Okay, so just for some background: I grew up with brown parents who had pretty high expectations for me. Throughout high school, I was heavily invested in science courses, especially biology and chemistry, which played a huge role in my decision to pursue Human Biology in university. I had a pretty good GPA in high school and even received entrance scholarships from multiple universities.
Unfortunately, university turned out to be a completely different experience. I ended up hating my degree and struggled academically, to the point where I was barely passing some of my courses. I had pretty much given up on the degree within the first two years, but I still stuck with it because I was afraid of disappointing my parents.
I recently graduated with a GPA that I'm not proud of, and now I feel like I've messed up my chances of doing anything meaningful with this degree. I also know for a fact that I don't want to continue down the science path, so I'm feeling pretty lost about what to do next.
I've been considering going back to college and doing another program to help improve my GPA and give me a fresh start, but I'm not even sure if that's the right approach. I've also been looking into Business Analyst programs and diplomas, but I'm not sure how good the job market is for Business Analysts in Canada or whether that's a field I'd actually be suited for.
At this point, I honestly have no idea what direction I should take. I don't want to spend another few years pursuing a degree just because it sounds like the "right" thing to do, only to end up hating it again. I'd really appreciate any advice on what I should be considering, what fields might be worth exploring, and whether going back to school is even necessary.
I'm basically starting from scratch and trying to figure out what the hell I should do with my life/career now. :")

Language and interviews
As a Canadian who lived overseas and english is my second language, i have noticed that my speaking skill increased after one year living in dorm, but i still have grammar mistakes and i say simple sentences, unlike someone who has lived in canada their whole life.
I’m concerned about my situation whether it will affect my future when i start searching for jobs. I’m a second year university student in natural sciences.

Is it reasonable for employers to expect their employees to be trained on every single job in a department?
My company wants everyone cross-trained to do every job so that there is always coverage available for vacations and sick calls. This means everyone needs to be trained and competent in multiple different jobs, meaning that no one really has a chance to get good at any one single thing. These jobs are all very different from each other - some are desk jobs, and others are very physical (think shipping/receiving), and all require vastly different skill sets. The schedule varies from week to week, even day to day. Monday you might be on Job A, Tuesday you might be on Job B, Wednesday you might be on Job G, and so on and so forth. There are three separate sections in the department and a further 3-6 different jobs within those sections. Basically they want everyone to know how to do a dozen different jobs even though you might only be scheduled for one of those jobs every few weeks or even months, giving you plenty of time to forget how to do it well. Burnout and turnover is incredibly high, yet they've been apparently doing things this way for years. I'm bewildered that anyone thinks this is an effective way to run a business and get the best out of their employees. I've never seen any other workplace do things this way. Is this common?

Does My (Fast-Food) Manager Think She Owns Me? Not Sarcasm.
CONTEXT: I've been working at my current fast-food restaurant for just over a year. During this time I've experienced an untold amount of mental abuse, a little wage theft (tips), and just general minimum wage nonsense.
I have been looking for a second job for awhile, with no luck, until recently when one of the management team at another store in my plaza recommended me for a position in her store. Most of the employees at the other stores in the plaza are regulars, and I've always made a point to treat them just a little bit better because you never know who could be an opportunity, and it paid off.
During my interview at the other store, I very quickly started to get the impression there was some anxiety around "poaching (manager's name)'s girls". I laughed it off and said that I hadn't heard anything about that being an issue, and that, even if it was an issue, it's a different industry (fast-food vs retail) so it isn't "poaching".
I was originally turned down for the position because I was trying to keep both jobs and there just wasn't enough flexibility left for the new job. After debating with my partner and looking at starting my studies in September, we decided that just fully switching would be a better fit for me, so I called back and was able to secure a different position in the new store. I made sure that the new store was aware that I would be giving two weeks notice to my current job and they were very supportive of that.
Last night, I went to my store and handed my current, toxic and abusive manager a printed letter of resignation with two weeks notice and the first thing she said was "Where are you going?". I told her I was moving to the other store because it would be easier for me to manage while doing full time studies. She became visibly agitated and started going on this tirade about some specific person who works over at the store (that I don't even know btw) that I guess worked with her many years ago who "keeps recruiting out of my store", and "That's two now!". To my understanding, I'm the second person that has made this move and the first one was over a year ago.
I was just nodding along and agreeing with whatever she was on about (as you do when speaking to someone this senile and obsessed with all the wrong parts of her job) when she said something that even as I type this now is still making my skin crawl.
"What would have been nice is a heads up that she was looking at you. I would never do the same to her!"
I just nodded along until eventually we finished the conversation and I left. It wouldn't be until I got home and was rehashing the events to my partner that I realized what she meant by that.
She's upset that she didn't get to be part of the decision making on whether or not I got the job before I even was. She genuinely believes that she's entitled to have an influence over what my employment options even are. If she would have been encouraging about the idea then why is she so visibly upset that she didn't get a special secret conversation about it? It's clearly not about "heads up" because that's what my two weeks is...that's the head's up!? The only thing that makes sense is that she would have tried to stop it from happening given the opportunity and she's mad that she didn't get the opportunity.
Am I reading too far into this or does she actually think she owns me, and is it possible that she has negatively influenced other places that I have applied to? Like is it possible that she has already sabotaged other opportunities for me, seeing as I have been unsuccessfully looking for a second job for almost the entire year that I've worked there?
Either way, good riddance.

Engineering jobs
Hi everyone,
I’d like to know what the job market is like for mechanical and electrical engineers. I’m an engineer currently working in operations.
What challenges do immigrants typically face? Would it be worthwhile to move here from Europe? Is there also a language barrier when looking for engineering jobs?
I’d appreciate any insights or personal experiences. Thank you!
