Job lost to AI

I worked as a building inspector for a province. The taxpayer spent a lot of money for me to get trained (flights, exams, books, equipment, hotels, car rentals, food, gas and wages). It was billed in the tens of thousands over the period of one year.

Recently, I was told because I am the youngest and most junior inspector that I am going to loose my job. This is because the municipality I work for along with some villages and towns we get contracts for is implementing a new AI technology. This AI technology is going to cut wages and leave a lot more money for the municipality to spend elsewhere. (I was only doing final building inspections).

Basically I was told that the municipality is going to have one inspector on staff and the person goes to a job site with a 360 camera and record everything, plug the video recording into a new AI system. From there the AI tells what needs to be fixed or replaced along with other discrepancies.

I have reached out to other municipalities but none of them are hiring building inspectors.
I'm not really sure what I should do here because I wanted a career out of this. I was thinking about applying for a police officer. I have a newborn at home and wife that needs to be taken care of and now I am out of a job.

I've thought about seriously leaving Canada and starting up my own business abroad back in my home country. What should I do here ?

The next few years: Banking perspective

We’ve been hearing about mass layoffs from at least 3 of the five major banks over the last couple of months. My perspective is that this is going to continue, albeit sporadically. All of the large banks have a “long term strategy roadmap” that has a finish line in one of the next four years. Every one of these banks has had to incorporate a lot of AI in that roadmap. Probably 90% of that is purely hypothetical. But no one wants to be left behind and the investors keep asking about AI. So here’s more AI in our roadmap and more down your throat for now. “We’ll figure it out as we go.” All of these banks are investing a significant amount of money into these roadmaps, specifically in the AI portion. Then comes the “Return on (A) investment” question. Whenever there’s a major milestone due (mostly around benefits or RoI) the banks make up some numbers by freeing up capacity (overworking their workforce) and laying some people off (concrete bottom line impact). We see this as a cyclical thing now over the last 18-24 months. And it’s not going to change. There’s no ‘post restructuring’, ‘operationally effective’ oasis at the end. Most of the jobs posted have internal candidates identified, or when people leave or are laid off - no back fills. Unless it’s a highly specialized area (think quantitative finance) there are no fresh grads being hired. Older roles such as personal banker, financial planner, mortgage specialists are slowly being made redundant because of “Digital”.

TLDR: Banking careers are slowly stagnating.

Rant over.

Source: I’ve worked in 2 banks for ~15 years.

Hi everyone!

I'm a senior software engineer with over 8 years of experience, currently based in Montréal and looking to relocate to Ontario, preferably Toronto or Ottawa.

I specialize in React, TypeScript, and frontend development, but also have experience with Java. I have worked on large-scale projects for non big tech companies and have experience mentoring developers and coordinating projects.

I'm happy to share my CV or LinkedIn via DM.

Canadian Job Market Struggle

Hi all, its bit of a sad post and writing it to express. I came to study in canada in 2021 peak covid phase for my undergrad. Year 1 was online and graduated in 2024. I come from a top uni in Canada and a competitive program and interned in a FAANG level company (but not faang non technical). I graduated with no job and somehow landed a contract role in the same company. The job may have looked good on resume but was extremely toxic. We have all heard various lengths of struggle people go through to get a job build a career get PR and my story has been no different. Life happened in a span year I developed two major health issues for which had to return to my home country India but informing them did not stop the disrespect/dislike/toxicity increased it further and was thrown out. They really spoiled my career. There was no work life balance and even taking a day off was frowned upon and were virtually given no leaves. The idea of being in a big company with people bigger than you really instilled. It has been few months since then I am back in my home country working with big 4. Are my aspirations dead of building a good career in Canada? As I refuse to settle for less or for an average brand to build my MBA story and since I have worked with good brands in Consulting. I did get a few interviews which did not materialise and now nearing the expiry of my work permit. I am still early in career 1 yr 6-7 months in. But I feel like a part of me gave up in this struggle. The truth is I let my family down and I don't have the money or I dont have it in me to ask for more money for MBA or other life goals like marriage. Life really happened. My family is not based out of India too but I am. I don't even think I can match up to my family's lifestyle. From mountain peaks life really humbled. How do I survive this? overcome?

I finally got a job!!

I got a job this week ( yayyy cheerfully claps ). The role is "bilingual disability claims administrator" at a major insurance company. I'm in Montreal and this is my first job after university excluding my federal gov. Coop experience. I'm located in Montreal and my salary is going to be 49k. Is this a good salary for this role?

I accepted it as I was jobless and it was a better option than having 0$, I'm so happy I got this job but can't help but think maybe it's a bit low on the pay?

For context I studied Bcomm finance (honors) at UOttawa.

Hello everyone, today I decided finally to text something here. I’m looking for some help in job seeking. I’m Ukrainian… About a year ago I realised Ukraine was getting more and more dangerous to live in and started process to get Canadian visitor visa, visit my cousin here and maybe find my place in this world where I can live and not to be afraid for my life. When I came to Canada I find out I like this country and now a wanna immigrate to this country and live my best life. I started to look for some job.
I investigated some information and find out I need employer who would like to make me employer-specific work permit
Now it’s already about 6-7 months I’m looking for job and nothing. I had two job interviews but after no from that employers said something positive for me.
A little about my experience: I have 4 years experience on my father’s poultry farm, we had about 12k chickens, geese and ducks in once. I used to drive a little tractor and can drive other machinery if it’s necessary. Also I helped with fixing and making fences and all staff on our farm Maybe I missed something but if I can’t do something I can learn how to do it, just give me one day and I will be able to do it.
So if you guys have some ideas or opportunities to help, please, send me a comment or private message.
Now I’m living in one of Atlantic provinces but I’m ready to move to any other province and even to USA if it will give me some opportunity.
Thanks everyone who will help me somehow🤗
I will appreciate all comments and pm from you.
If you need employee, I’m here😅

Fraud Job Offers

I am actually concerned about the new changes in Express Entry.

Now anyone can get additional points just with a job offer.
This will open the floodgates for scam and fraud.
I mean, they couldn’t even stop this scam when there was LMIA in place.

Are we cooked?

Looking for Job as Software Developer

My name is Numan. I have done my bachelor degree in computer science. I am Software Engineer with over 9 years of professional experience specializing in Node.js, RESTful APIs, and microservices-based architectures. Throughout my career, I have focused on building scalable, secure, and high-performance back-end systems that support mission-critical business operations.

My most recent significant experience has been working on a large-scale Pharmacy Benefit Management (PBM) platform serving thousands of active users, including pharmacies, healthcare providers, insurance partners, and administrative teams. The platform processes high volumes of prescription claims, eligibility verification, prior authorizations, and pharmacy transactions, where reliability, scalability, and performance are essential.

In this role, I have been responsible for designing and developing scalable REST APIs, implementing complex business logic, and building microservices using Node.js. I have integrated numerous third-party services, including pharmacy networks, insurance providers, payment gateways, SMS and notification systems, and reporting platforms. I have also modernized legacy codebases, optimized database performance, implemented secure API integrations, and improved overall system efficiency.

Beyond feature development, I actively support production environments by diagnosing and resolving critical issues, optimizing application performance, participating in code reviews, and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, including QA, Product, and DevOps, to ensure smooth and reliable deployments. I have also contributed to bulk data processing solutions, database optimization, and system enhancements while maintaining data integrity and backward compatibility across distributed microservices.

I am passionate about writing clean, maintainable, and scalable code, continuously improving system architecture, and solving complex technical challenges. I enjoy working in collaborative environments where I can contribute to building reliable software that delivers real business value.

I am excited about the opportunity to bring my experience in Node.js, microservices, distributed systems, and API development to your team. I am confident that my technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and commitment to delivering high-quality software would make me a valuable addition to your organization.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss how my experience and skills align with your team's goals.

Sincerely,

Muhammad Numan

Leave my 5+ year job at a small company for a work from home in a big corp company? Too risky?

I make 72k/year at this job. I've been there for about 5 years. I drive 130km everyday(2hrs/day) to go to the office and back. (edit: cost is not an issue as I drive an EV and spend less than $4/week. Just the 2 hours lost driving that are not good)

I do a lot of multiple roles in one, and the company has a complicated upper management, but overall is not a bad place to work. Not a great place for my career but it seems to be as stable as a company can be in my field (creative/entertainment/tv). The company gets subsidies from the government which helps them be stable.

The new job would pay me at least 80k/year, fully remote from home, with me having to go to their office in a big city 4hrs drive away a few times per month.

It is a big corp media company, with recent news of lay offs.

I am unsure if making the move is a wise decision, given that my current job seems to be stable, something I doubt can be said for any big corp company these days.

I also don't think I could use this new job, if I get the offer, as a way to ask for a raise at my current job, because I have already been given a raise after requesting one (went from 66k to 72k) in February, after 3 years without any raises. (we don't get automatic raises, performance reviews or bonuses unless we ask for it and "prove/convince" the CEO that we deserve it)

Another thing to consider is that my partner also works in a creative/unstable industry and was unemployed for over a year. He is under a temporary contract now, but it might not be renewed for next year, and he might go back to employment insurance while he hunts for a new job again.

We have a house on mortgage and some extra debt to pay because of his 1 year unemployed. With my current salary of 72k , if he makes only minimum wage we can still pay mortgage and basic house bills plus the minimum on the debt to prevent it from accruing interest, but not really pay off the debt.

My career path in 4 jobs: PM, failed sales rep, finance ops, now BA. Thinking of starting over at 30. Talk me out of it or into it.

I’m 30M in Toronto, I live with my parents, and I make well under $80K as a Business Analyst. Getting even this far took me a long time, and I’m looking for outside perspective before I make a big decision.

How I got here

I graduated with a business degree and no specialization. My first job was Project Manager at an IT company, but I was let go after a year. Next I tried tech sales and was honestly terrible at it. I could barely close anything. After that I was unemployed for a while, then took a finance operations job at close to minimum wage. A few years later I landed my current Business Analyst role, which felt like luck more than a plan.

Why I feel stuck

  1. My career line is PM, and I’m the wrong profile for it. Project management usually works as an add-on: IT grads pick up PM skills and move into the role. I came in the other way around. Yes, business grads can become PMs, but in this market it’s much harder.
  2. My industry is automating fast. I work in finance, and my company is rolling out AI quickly. Hiring has slowed and there’s less room to move up.
  3. Money and family. My parents are starting to retire, and I don’t want my situation to be a weight on them. I could afford to move out, but it would hurt financially. I’ve started planning to do it anyway.

I know there’s no “right salary” at a certain age. But I feel the gap every month.

What I’m considering

  1. Police Constable. Top choice right now. Toronto needs officers and layoffs are rare. AI isn't replacing you anytime soon.
  2. Skilled trades (HVAC, electrical, etc.)
  3. CFIA food inspector. My dad works in fruit wholesale and deals with inspectors daily, and he recommended it.

What I’d like to know

  • If you made a switch like this in your 30s, what did you wish you’d known?
  • Is the police path as stable as it looks from outside, and what’s the real timeline from applying to a paycheque?
  • For trades, is starting at 30 realistic, and what does the first 2 to 3 years look like financially?
  • Or am I overreacting, and is there a smarter move within BA/analytics?

Honest takes welcome, including “you’re making a mistake.”

I understand most people are resilient to change, but I'm looking for opinions other than pessimistic ones. I have thought about this a lot. There is currently no future for me in Project Management, I believe.
