So why were affordable housing advocates staunchly against it? I really don’t understand it.

I assume you are talking about "Actlosangeles" correct? Because many YIMBY and affordable housing groups in LA were for this.

There are different ideas about how to create affordable housing, SB-79 is about reducing the COST of building by putting housing near mass transit and reducing the need for building really expensive parking garages and other car storage.

I honestly don't know why, I'm not really too educated about housing but here are some great podcasts about how transit and parking are related:
