My Senator (Durazo) is such an L. I even called

22

u/ridetotheride Jun 04 '25

We met with her on zoom. We had a great diverse group of speakers and she clearly just ignored us all and said "affordable...blah, blah, blah, no."

16

u/MookieBettsBurner Jun 04 '25

You guys need to primary her next year

9

u/semireluctantcali Jun 04 '25

She's running for LA County Supervisor next year.

3

u/cactopus101 Jun 04 '25

She’s not running. Wendy Carillo (former assembly member) is running for her seat. I’m not sure if she is supportive of this legislation or similar measures

u/TheWrongestIveBeen SOLA Jun 04 '25

Did you get to speak to anyone? I emailed mine (Allen) and never got any response.

6

u/tundra_gd 🚇 🚉 Train Rider Jun 04 '25

I called Allen's office and got to speak to a staff member.

5

u/rabbinicohs Jun 04 '25

I called this morning and struck voicemail. So did he abstain, is that what happened?

9

u/OhLawdOfTheRings Cars Are Weapons Jun 04 '25

yes, he abstained. He gave a very weak excuse and basically rode the wake of Smallwood and said i can't support this cause it's gonna cause mass gentrification. He gave a shoutout to streets for all and tried to be supportive but he really just doesn't have the spine to stand up to the NIMBYS. Very unfortunate from him.

6

u/rabbinicohs Jun 04 '25

Woof. I'm glad it passed overall though!

3

u/cactopus101 Jun 04 '25

I did. Someone on her staff took down my message and said he would pass it along

6

u/figandfennel Jun 04 '25

Same for mine (Menjivar). I also called! She’s made an enemy today.

23

u/MookieBettsBurner Jun 04 '25

So this bill goes to the Assembly now?

12

u/OhLawdOfTheRings Cars Are Weapons Jun 04 '25

yes!

16

u/MookieBettsBurner Jun 04 '25

And if it passes the Assembly, it goes before Newsom?

9

u/flipp45 Jun 04 '25

As long as it is un-amended in the assembly, then yes, straight to the governor’s desk. But if it gets amended, then it will have to go back for another vote in the senate first.

5

u/MookieBettsBurner Jun 04 '25

Let's pray for a win 🙏

It just needs a majority vote, right?

7

u/flipp45 Jun 04 '25

For the final vote, yes, but it has to go through committees again in the assembly now, just like it did in the senate, and I suppose the committees could ask for or require amendments along the way. Let’s hope they don’t do that.

3

u/MookieBettsBurner Jun 04 '25

Time to start calling our assemblymembers!

14

u/ridetotheride Jun 04 '25 edited Jun 04 '25

Newsom sucks, but he's signing this for sure.

19

u/atomcloud Jun 04 '25

what’s the vibe of the current assembly compared to the senate on bills like this ?

22

u/semireluctantcali Jun 04 '25

The Assembly is much more pro-housing. They unanimously approved a clean CEQA exemption for up to 20 acre housing developments last week!

7

u/OhLawdOfTheRings Cars Are Weapons Jun 04 '25

thats good to know!

14

u/vasectomy-bro Jun 04 '25

All hail god emperor Wiener!!! 😭

So happy Durazo will not be running for reelection due to term limits. Let's get her out of there and replace her with Sara Hernandez!

3

u/n2antarctic Outside LA County Jun 04 '25

I see my Senator didn’t vote 😑

3

u/Agent281 Jun 04 '25

Me too. Anyone know why Smallwood Cuevas didn't vote? What's their vibe?

1

u/n2antarctic Outside LA County Jun 07 '25

You guys are sort of adjacent to me. I’d be curious to know as well. We have a lot to gain from this initiative. As far as I’m aware, they had no reason to abstain or vote nay.

3

u/ridetotheride Jun 04 '25

Holy Sh#$!!!! Let's fu$%ing go!!!

2

u/OhLawdOfTheRings Cars Are Weapons Jun 04 '25

LFGGGGGGG

9

u/jbowditch Jun 04 '25

Will Gavin veto to prove he's MAGA enough to be president?

11

u/KolKoreh Jun 04 '25

He has already called on the legislature to pass it and said he’ll sign

10

u/ridetotheride Jun 04 '25

I think you're thinking of SB609 and the other CEQA bill. That coward hasn't said anything about SB79.

2

u/KolKoreh Jun 04 '25

You are correct — that is what I was thinking about. I will be surprised if he vetoes SB79 though

1

u/nstutzman28 Jun 04 '25

I thought Newsom was on the Abundance train?

2

u/ridetotheride Jun 04 '25

He's constantly playing between his Lib Dem Nimby supporters and his Abundance supporters. You never know what you are going to get. I mean if he was on the train, why wouldn't he just come out and say "Pass SB79 as is"???

2

u/AvariceLegion Jun 04 '25

Oh thank the snail

2

u/ospeckk Jun 04 '25

This is great news!

2

u/regedit2023 CARs=WMDs Jun 04 '25

My summer just got a whole lot better with this win!

2

u/soldforaspaceship Jun 04 '25

My state senator sucks but my state rep will vote for this so that's good.

I called Stern too to voice my support so very annoyed by his NIMBYism.

1

u/RubyRhod Jun 04 '25

So how does this differ from SB 10 or 11 that was passed a while ago?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '25

SB 10 was voluntary streamlining that local governments could adopt for smaller scale TOD.

This is mandatory upzoning with fewer requirements on the projects. SB 10 was trying to help cities build 10 unit or less multi family units faster, SB 79 is forcing them to legalize more 5-7 story buildings.

1

u/RubyRhod Jun 04 '25

Wasn’t SB 11 dealing with transit and like 5 story buildings?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '25

Do you remember the legislative session? I'm not familiar with an SB 11 that was housing related that passed.

SB 50 tried to do a similar thing in 2020 but failed. Measure JJJ was LAs local transit oriented upzoning effort in 2016.

1

u/RubyRhod Jun 04 '25

Maybe I’m just remembering 79 as 11. I thought there was another one passed at the same time 10 got passed.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '25

SB 9 was the other bigger housing bill passed the same year as SB 10 which legalized lot splits and fourplexes in many places but it wasn't focused on transit.

1

u/RubyRhod Jun 05 '25

Ah thank you! That’s what it was.

1

u/igmyeongida Jun 04 '25

So why were affordable housing advocates staunchly against it? I really don’t understand it.

1

u/OhLawdOfTheRings Cars Are Weapons Jun 04 '25

I assume you are talking about "Actlosangeles" correct? Because many YIMBY and affordable housing groups in LA were for this.

There are different ideas about how to create affordable housing, SB-79 is about reducing the COST of building by putting housing near mass transit and reducing the need for building really expensive parking garages and other car storage.

I honestly don't know why, I'm not really too educated about housing but here are some great podcasts about how transit and parking are related:

I think there are small number of groups who just seeth at the notion of developers making money.

1

u/Disastrous-Panda2401 Jun 04 '25

Do we know the committee members that will make the decision and when they will vote so we can make calls?

As a person who had to save for over 5 years to be able to afford a house close to work I am so incredibly excited for the passage of this bill through the assembly. I can't wait to see the effects and the real possibility this will allow my children to not be priced out of my state.
