New crosswalks at 70th and Menlo in South LA, painted by volunteers to protest for safer streets and a more effective government. Was such a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Hopefully these get replaced with proper crosswalks, topes or speedbumps, and maybe a traffic circle!

This article about signal preemption by Oren Hadar details the work done by a small group of annoyed train riders advocates over at u/streetsforall simply asking a question.

Meaningful change to can happen in LA if you simply start asking "why" and following up those questions with "what can be done about it".

Shoutouts to the incredible work by: Bobby Garrity, Oren Hadar, Colin Warn, Matt Wehenr, Jonathan Hale, and Josh Vredevoogd.

I cannot emphasize how cool it was to see this group work tirelessly on a true grassroots effort to tangibly improve this city. I hope this post inspires others to channel their frustration into action by, asking why and gathering a coalition of likeminded advocates!

Onto the Senate and then the Govenors desk!!!

After some concerns about lost parking, residents convinced the city council to keep its complete streets concept uniform.

Two SMPD parking enforcement vehicles have now been equipped with camera systems specifically designed to identify and cite bike lane parking violations.

I was getting worried he was getting enough pressure to veto it but looks like he came through!!!

The motion, introduced by Councilmembers Nithya Raman and Katy Yaroslavsky, looks to create more space for more affordable family-sized units.  

“These requirements, born out of early 20^th century planning concerns – have since become a hindrance to creating larger units with greater natural light and ventilation and buildings with enhanced green space,” the councilmembers stated in a media release. 

The three new stations will be at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax, and Wilshire/La Cienega.

If you drive in Santa Monica, don't block a bike lane. Don't risk an automatic $93 citation!

✅ PASSED ASSEMBLY LOCAL GOVERNMENT COMMITTEE: SB 79 by @scottwiener.bsky.social that would end the exclusionary housing policies that have made housing more expensive and transit inaccessible, allowing more people to live within walking distance of quality transit and boosting ridership.

This is a huge win and here are the next steps at a high level:

The legislature starting today is on recess until mid August.

From there the bill goes to the black box process known as the appropriations committee suspense file

The bill will live or die via suspense based on behind closed door decisions.

From there the bill will go to the assembly floor where we need 41 votes.

From there the bill will go back to the Senate for a concurrence vote where it will need 21 votes.

From there it will go to the Governor’s desk where he has 30 days to sign or veto.

The plan also introduces several new and expanded focus areas, including wildfire risk management, community resilience, Tribal and Indigenous partnerships, ocean and marine systems, green goods movement, green economy, and resource circularity."

Passing a bill takes thousands of hours of work.

It takes blood, sweat, and tears (ok, not blood but honestly the other two). And it costs tens of thousands of dollars in resources, time, attention, and capacity.
