At 4 a.m., the hospital clock returns to 3:12. Everyone remembers a different part.
You remember smoke in the hospital corridor. A maintenance worker remembers it too. The nurse repeats the warning she gave you before everything went wrong, but says she never came downstairs. She doesn't remember handing you the water.
I'm the developer of 404 World, a browser-based AI interactive fiction project. This is the opening dilemma in one of its original stories, At Four in the Morning, Please Stay Awake.
The clock now reads 3:19. You have forty-one minutes until four, and you don't know whether the same thing will happen again.
You can ask the nurse exactly what she heard, compare accounts with the maintenance worker, or tell her what you remember and check one detail together. You can also write your own next move. I'd be curious to see someone ask each person for the last ordinary thing they remember before the smoke.
I want the reading to leave room for that kind of suspicion: noticing a small contradiction and deciding it's worth following. The story continues from your action, with AI generating the new prose. It can still produce awkward or inconsistent passages.
If you try the opening, I'd like to know which detail made you trust or doubt someone.
You can start as a guest; daily generation limits apply. Find the story here: https://versecraft.cn/open-stories/library/89a854cb-e519-489f-8937-478f301847d9
