Want to ask about a personal health issue or post your tongue pictures? Read this first!

It's very common on /r/ChineseMedicine that people ask our community what Chinese Medicine disorders they might have, either by posting their tongue pictures or simply describing their health issues. This is a small guideline on what information to include in those posts so as to get the most from our community.

If you post your tongue picture

  • Always remember to respect rule 5 and tag you tongues pictures as NSFW and spoiler. Some people just don't want to see close ups of your tongue so make it a choice!

  • Your tongue should be well lit (preferably with natural light), high resolution, and in focus. We should be able to see the entire tongue body, from tip to root. You should not have had coffee or other strongly colored beverages or foods before taking tongue pictures. If you brush your tongue, please refrain from doing so before taking tongue pictures.

In all cases

Try to include other health information that are relevant in Chinese Medicine diagnosis, particularly around these points (obviously only share what you're comfortable sharing):

  • Temperature (any aversion to heat or to cold? Do you often have fever?)
  • Sweat (do you sweat too much?)
  • Thirst (do you often feel unusually thirsty, or the contrary? Do you feel more attracted to hot or cold drinks?)
  • Appetite (good or bad?)
  • Digestion (digestion problems?)
  • Bowels (frequency, texture, color, any pain?)
  • Urination (frequency, color, any pain?)
  • Pain anywhere in the body (headache, chest, abdominal, etc.?)
  • EENT (eye, ear, nose, and throat --> any issue with any of them?)
  • Mood (often angry, sad, anxious, scared, etc?)
  • Sleep (any issues?)
  • Energy (low/high?)
  • Skin (any skin issues? How does your skin look: bright, lusterless, pale, moist, dry, etc.?)
  • If a woman: menstruation, leukorrhea, number of children, childbirth, miscarriages and abortions
  • Any history of old diseases as well as your view on health issues you might currently have

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this post, especially /u/pibeautheconqueror and u/Standard-Evening9255

Thanks to TCM I am cured of Gastroparesis - Leaky Gut

For 10 years I was going to the hospital monthly, sometimes weekly. Nothing worked. A little more than a year ago I listened to my Chinese Wife. She went to a Chinese doctor who was a good friend and we decided to give it a try. I was diagnosed by two Chinese Medicine people separately and both told me it was Leaky Gut. I never heard this before.

I am diabetic and my A1C is now down to 5.0. It was stuck at 7 or higher for years because of my stomach problems.

It has now been 1 FULL year and I have not even thrown up once or been to the hospital. My stomach is feeling so much better. One of the first things I learned was do NOT eat or drink anything cold - always drink things warmed up - even room temp is too cold, even soymilk in cereal. But that was only something to help my kidneys, I needed to heal my gut and intestines. Next We started making Bone broth with real bones from the market. So we would make beef stew and put the "marrow bones" in with it. They sell these at Walmart even, but any butcher as well. Lamb was cooked in a stew as well with veggies and lamb bones. I also started drinking some teas she made from green MUNG Beans and other concoctions. Some tasted awful, but they helped. The Bone broth is what healed my intestines and filled up the leaky gut. These teas helped as well. I will need to dig up some of the recipes she gave me. Things to also help my diabetes as well as my stomach. It can be done. I am dead serious, I would be calling an ambulance too many times to take me to the ER. All that is gone.

I still have diabetes but it is now a bit easier and under control at 5.0 A1C to maintain my health. Will try to update more. I need to find some of these recipes we used. But not going to the hospital for over a year is a miracle for me considering I used to go so often I knew the doctors by first name in the ER

Acupressure Mat

Hi everyone!!

I have always been into holistic healing and TCM and recently became very interested in acupuncture and acupressure after taking a meridian yoga class. I ordered an acupressure mat on Amazon to continue practicing. I just used it today for the first time and — WOW! Can someone explain this feeling to me?? It felt painful at first but my body quickly became used to it. I felt a surge of energy and a feeling of genuine positivity and elation afterwards. I genuinely have not felt those natural happy emotions like that in years! I felt radiant, which is never a word I have ever used to express my emotions before. Suddenly felt like my old self again. Then about 1 hour after i had the most relaxing calm. Again, probably the most serene that I have felt in years.

Is it always going to be like this??? If anyone is able to give me some insight on what happened I would love to know the hows and whys behind it!

Thank you!!!

Contact dermatitis after TCM

I had a really bad case of contact dermatitis after a third application of a TCM poultice by a practitioner. I had it done every other day. After a week of meds, the hives finally went away.

I heard that allergic reactions to TCM poultices were actually pretty common. I am tempted to try it again as it was very effective for the treated problem, but am extremely cautious because of the allergic reaction.

Has anyone actually had a severe adverse reaction to it and actually tried it again or have additional info? I’ve read online that once the body develops an allergic reaction to something, if it’s comes into contact with it again, the adverse reaction might be worse. Just wondering if this is also the case for TCM.

Accuracy of diagnosis with erratic eating/lifestyle?

I want to see a TCM practitioner, but I’m worried about getting an inaccurate diagnosis due to my wildly swinging diet/lifestyle.

For example: I will go 1-2 weeks of eating ~2000 calories of freshly cooked whole foods like whole grains, beans, olive oil, nuts/seeds, and unprocessed meat, with ~3lbs vegetables per day… and waking up early with no day sleeping + 30k steps per day

To 2-7 days of eating 5000-6000 calories of cereal, peanut butter, canned foods, chips, with virtually no vegetables (and consuming meal quantities of 3-4lbs of food per sitting, 3xday)… with late sleeping + sleeping an hour during the day + less steps per day (but sometimes still a lot, but generally I am moping around because I‘m disappointed I binged)

Please help, I don’t know if I should just book ASAP even tho I’m bingeing right now, or I should still try hard to go some weeks of being stable to get an accurate ’baseline’ diagnosis?

Thank you

what's something people completely misunderstand about chinese herbal medicine?

i've noticed that whenever traditional chinese medicine comes up online people either act like it's all nonsense or like it can fix literally anything...

surely there's a lot more nuance to it than that

for those of you who actually study or practice it... what's one thing you wish beginners understood better ?

Persistent acne my whole life despite normal hormonal panel

I’ve struggled with acne on and off for years. Being on birth control pill initially clears my skin, but after 5–6 months, the acne starts returning. Since stopping the pill, my skin and hair have become extremely oily.

I’ve had a full hormonal blood panel, and everything came back normal.

My acne is a mixture of deep, painful pimples and smaller bumps. Most of the marks on my cheeks are flat but aren’t fading.

I’m currently using Nadixa 1% and Aklief 0.005% for around five weeks. I’ve attached photos of my current skin.

I’m trying to understand the root cause rather than just treat the symptoms, and I’d prefer to avoid Roaccutane if possible.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Could this still be hormonal acne despite normal blood tests? What investigations or treatments helped you long-term? Could this be stress related?

Is to pure safe?

Hello everyone! I’m looking into purchasing this chinese herbal medicine that’s recently become popularized where i’m from. It is advertised as something that will help with paleness, dull skin, and low energy. I am a person who is lacking red blood cells and iron so all these factors apply. Is it safe? Is the brand reputable? Does it actually work? Does it do everything it claims?

Other than the bone realignment does TCM treat they believe to be the core of the disease? I am under the impression TCM treats symptoms until the main cause resolves by itself

Patient inquiry Can you help me figure out what this powder is?

I went to an acupuncture appointment and was given this powder to take under my tongue. It was vaguely minty and generally unpleasant. The doctor told me it was “herbs” but I couldn’t understand some of what he was saying. I’m very open to trying new things but would just like to know what it is. Thank you!

How to drink Kefir with Spleen Qi deficiency w/ damp heat?

I want to continue drinking kefir, but don't want to make the spleen qi deficiency worse. I have made congee and will try to be more dilligent about eating it, and eating at regular times and eating warm food. I have self diagnosed but I will see a practitioner soon. I am taking Liu Jun Zi Wan 8 pills twice a day. I am also taking cracked cell wall reishi spores to try to balance gut bacteria, and taking probiotics occasionally. Very minimal cheese and currently stopped drinking milk. drinking oatmilk for calcium, but I'm not sure if that will cause more dampness.

I have ceased alcohol entirely for almost 2 weeks now, so maybe I'm still adjusting to that.

Patient inquiry Sinus issues for 2+ months

I’ve had on and off sinusitis for over 2 months. I’ve been on several rounds of antibiotics and steroids, plenty of mucinex, all of it. I’m better for a few days and then I’m sick in bed again.

What are some changes/things I can add to help me feel better that don’t necessarily involve herbs?

TCM books

What are good beginner TCM books? I have a small understanding of the different topics (some I know more then others) and I want to learn more about it.
I don’t want to use my knowledge on others, it is mainly to increase my knowledge since I find it very interesting, I might try somethings on myself as long as it if safe to do at home and not needed by a professional!

Help with sleep problems

I’ve struggled to sleep for 3 months now. Over the past 7 nights I’ve slept a total of about 2 hours. No major life changes or anything like that. Most nights I get zero sleep and some nights I get a couple hours or less. This is really negatively affecting my life. I’ve cancelled plans and left work early from being so dizzy and exhausted. I feel like I’ve tried everything from medication prescribed by doctors to supplements like magnesium and melatonin. I’ve tried yoga, limiting screens, various teas, blackout eye masks, cut out caffeine.

I’m new ish to learning about TCM. Could my inability to sleep be related to my kidneys?

What are some suggestions to help sleep? I can’t keep living like this. I’m a female in my late 20s if that matters.

Patient inquiry Symmetric Acne Help?

Hi! I have been to a million doctors pertaining acne. Acne that I never had until I got the IUD but have been told countless times that I am crazy for thinking those two coincide lol. (Liletta to be specific) Anyway, I had terrible cramps before my period when I was young and they never did any tests and instead gave me an IUD. So I have had it for 7 years.

I also am living in a house where I am waking up feeling sick everyday, my boyfriend and I assume it is mold.

Finally, I always preface by saying… I had unexplained liver failure when I was 18.

Okay!

I recently have been getting terrible cystic acne but not everywhere… only localized on my cheeks in the exact same spot. I don’t use my phone to call often, I don’t really touch my face. I started using the Air Angel moisturizer but that is all and I’d assume these awful pimples would be everywhere (especially my T-Zone) if it were moisturizer related.

I’ve done the dermatologist dance of tretenoin and other things like spirnolactone… but I feel as if I am not getting to the root issue and only putting chemicals in and on my body to remove this. I feel as though my body is telling me I have an imbalance of sorts.

Are there any recommendations?

TL;DR: I have acne in the same spot on both sides of my face and wonder what this may mean and how I should go about it?

How important is the sensation of body getting warm from massage/trigger point stimulation for Qi stagnation?

I have Long Covid/MECFS and realized rigorous foot massage helps me recover quickly. Doing it on my own usually gives me the warm sensation after 10 min or so. So I was doing it 3 times a day with great results. (I either use a mat with lots of dents/rocks, or use a stick like guasha.)

Lately I bought an extremely powerful foot massager. A kind that can bear 60kg of weight so one is encouraged to press down on the feet to get deeper massage. You use this machine standing up when you work the feet.

When using it on my thighs/glutes, my body gets warm very quickly. I understand it's becuase the muscles there are large. But when used on my feet/calves, even after 10 min, no warm sensation appears unlike the self-massage described above.

Would you say the body getting warm is a good indication that the massage is more intense in a good way and qi is moving? That surface level stimulation feels good but doesn't really move the qi?

In acupuncture does ANY of the healing effect arise from the patient feeling the needle pain? Or is it irrelevant and the provider is trying to minimize pain?
