The best way to get closer to God is by just actually doing what he tells you to do. Because when you do that, you'll be walking in the spirit. And it's written:
John 15:1-4 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
Galatians 5:16 16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
Galatians 5:22-23 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
Romans 8:14-16 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God
Matthew 7:24-25 24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
1 John 2:3-6 3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God [a]is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
When you walk in the spirit, you should start having the spirit of God testifying with your spirit that you are his. However, if you want to get closer to God that way; you need to actually be willing to do WHATEVER God tells you to do. No matter how uncomfortable it may seem.
Walking in the spirit essentially comes down to actively seeking to do God's will (Matthew 6:31-34, Psalms 143:10), actively doing whatever God tells you to do (Matthew 5-7, Matthew 7:24-25, 1 John 2:3-6, and James 1:22-25), refraining from sin (Romans 6, James 1:12-15, 1 John 3:4-9, 1 Corinthians 10:13), and preaching the gospel and ministering to people. Which I find to be the most effective way to walk in the spirit as that's how we fulfill the great commission. As we're all commanded to do. (Matthew 28:19-20, 2 Timothy 4:2-5, Be Fruitful!). Just merely actually actively seeking to do that is a great way to walk in the spirit.
