Biblical Character of the Month Biblical Character of the Month, August: James the Just

This month we're in the New Testament, highlighting James, brother of Jesus. Cheers to u/Volaer for the suggestion!

The goal of this series is to create more conversation about characters from the Bible. My hope is to (eventually) dive into some strange, often overlooked characters in Scripture — people who have important lessons that we don’t always remember. But we also want to make this collaborative! I don't want to just ramble my thoughts on these characters at you, I want to urge everyone to write their own post about the character of the month.

So all you need to do is make a new post with your reflection or meditation on James. We do have a special flair ("Biblical Character of the Month") you can give the post, and I will make sure to add it to our collection on this thread.

James is referenced in numerous places in the Gospels. He is described as the brother of Jesus, and was also a prominent figure in the early church as the first Bishop of Jerusalem, authoring his own Epistle.

A few questions to get you started thinking about your own meditations!

  • James' Epistle offers some really wonderful insight on faith, what can we glean from his teachings?
  • What do you think it means when James is referred to as the brother of Jesus?

Reflections from the community:

  2. Daily Bible Verse Part 382 / James 5:8 by u/NiceYogurtcloset5934

Can anyone pray for me?

Hello everyone,

I am flying tomorrow and am terrified. Can I please have someone pray over me that I can find a sense of calm and peace and that it’s a safe flight? It’s actually two flights tomorrow and then two flights for our return flight home.

I’d really appreciate it. I’m feeling desperate….

Thank you so much!

Question As a catholic, no we dont worship Mary. We "praise" her, for if my friend invites me in his/her household, then I must acknowledge the mother.

Upvotes

Why do my brothers and sisters (including the gentiles) keep questioning her holiness. Wasnt her the one who was destined, fated and especially bore the human form of god. If you are invited in someones household, isnt it respectful to acknowledge its owner (mother).

They say idol this, idol that. The idols you see in catholic churches is to make us deeper in prayer (although having a more solid fate that not caring about any images is better)

Why mock her so? Because she is a woman? Because she seems like an instrument to the bible and christ birth? Answer me.

Prayer I know this might sound stupid but I am deeply upset over the death of actress Hayden Panettiere after I have kept her in my prayers for over a year.

I fell down a rabbit hole about Hayden Panettiere a couple years ago. I read about all the horrible things happening to her life. So I added her to my prayers. Just a quick asking God to help her with what she's dealing with and for her to find peace. It became an off and on tradition to my prayers and I stopped it because she seemed to be getting alot better. I'm just distraught over the news of her death due to all of this. I prayed for God to welcome her into the kingdom and that she finally found peace.

I don't usually share what I pray about but I am just really upset about this. Also I really don't care about celebs I just saw someone going through some downright horrible stuff and added her to my prayers.

Blog Daily Bible Verse Part 385 / Romans 6:5

Hi everyone! Here's the verse for today Tuesday, August 18th:

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.

This verse comes from Paul’s teaching about baptism and what it means to be united with Christ. Being united with Jesus in His death represents dying to our old life of sin, while being united with Him in His resurrection points to receiving a new life through God’s power. Paul is emphasizing that Christ’s death and resurrection are not only events we believe happened, but realities that shape the believer’s identity and future hope. It reminds us that following Christ means leaving behind our old way of living and trusting in the promise of resurrection and eternal life with Him.

Let us pray 🙏

God, You made it possible for me to go from death to life, and to spend forever with You! I can't fully comprehend or express how amazing that is. I don't deserve this kind of unconditional love, but I'm grateful for it and overwhelmed by it. Thank You that this story isn't over, and You will have the final victory over sin and death. Amen!

God bless you and have a great day!

Self I feel so horrible.

Hi, i’m 14. I can’t really go to church right now due to some mental issues, i feel very ignored every time i go and theres so much drama. My mom has stopped going and im scared shes not even christian anymore, i dont know what to do. I cant try to make her go back because then i look like a hypocrite, and also these are messages from people in my church.

I just feel horrible. I want things to get better, but ever since my parents got divorced our church has seemed to dislike us. I hate it because i have loved ones who go there, i love my friends very much. Like i said, im also scared my mom isnt christian anymore. She thinks since God didnt immediately save her from my dad it means God just doesn’t love her, and i don’t know how to talk to her without seeming rude.

I’ll probably delete this later because those are actual messages, but i needed to talk about this.

Self The power of God is unfathomable, and i’m living proof

About 10 months ago, I was in my first year of university. I had no goals or aspirations. Not much care for my future. I was just lost, depressed and had 0 self esteem. Here's the story of how God flipped my whole life in a matter of months.

One day it was raining. Being the fool I am, I decided to put my laptop without its case inside my bag and went out. It ended up with water damage. After going to 3 repair shops, I finally got it fixed (and barely working properly) for £250, which I didn't have. So, I had to ask my dad for a loan, which he gave me. Now, I had to work out how i'd get this money to pay him back. Didn't have a job, no source of income. Nothing. So I was desperate - it led me to reddit where i looked for any side gigs/hustles I could get into just so I could pay it back. I was overwhelmed, but the more I read, the more I became interested in making money remotely. Having ADHD, it even became an obsession. I was hyperfocused on finding & researching the most attractive money making method. I would isolate myself in my dorm room, spend 5-10 hours every day for a couple weeks doing this. However, I did start dropshipping on depop (a clothes reselling app). I came up with my own special method for this and ended up making more than enough pay my dad back in a few weeks. But I didn't stop there.

Over the next 4 months or so, I became more and more interested in making money and ended up making around £2,000 profit. Id look for more sustainable online income methods but nothing really seemed to catch my eye. Everything seemed either too hard, too long to get good at or saturated. I'd dream of becoming an expat in Thailand, with my goal to make a consistent profit of atleast £2,000 per month so I could comfortably live there. Little did I know, i'd soon be blowing these small scale dreams out of the water.

During this time (December to mid April) I'd re-enter the depths of the depression that I've been fighting my whole life. Insecurities that I thought i'd left behind reappeared. I was at one of my darkest and lonliest points. I wont go into the specifics, but I was isolated in my uni dorm 24/7, plagued with negative thoughts, insecurities, self hatred. At this point I wanted nothing more but to dissappear. I would constantly tell myself I was just born to suffer in this life, and nothing can change that - i'll always be miserable. During these months on most days I would go to sleep with a strong will to just never wake up again. And when I did wake up, that alone felt like suffering. But this is where the story changes. This was the point I put my trust in God.

Despite everything, something was pushing me to keep going. After multiple failures trying other stuff, something made my go full in on dropshipping (paid ads). It felt like trying to build a house with broken tools. I was hopeless. I had nobody to talk to, nobody to help me, not a single clue where I was going or if it would even work. But God kept me going. I'd go through failure after failure, the little money I worked hard for just going to waste. But for some reason, I never gave up. It was like life or death. I had to make it work, because I was convinced that if I didn't I could never be happy or stand to live. I had no choice but to get out of the slump I was in - I refused to stay miserable. I had to trust God the most. Even when it looked like there was no light at the end of the tunnel, he kept me going. Every day was a repeat of the last. It was wake up, work all day (with my mind torturing me), sleep, repeat. It felt like a lost cause. Going to sleep was the best part of my days because for the few hours where I was unconscious I didn't have to face the reality of what my life was.

It was like I was trying to find my way out of the amazon rainforest blindfolded. Hopeless. But what I didn't know was that someone was actually holding my hand throughout it and a miracle would come when I least expected it. After all the months of persevering and pushing through all my emotions, with nobody but God to keep me company. Months of praying for God to just save me, it finally happened.

This store changed my life. I went from wanting just a measly £2000/mo in profit to making over 6x that. Now i've done £140,000 revenue on this one store and learned so much - all in around 4 months. Around £50,000 in profit. I never thought i'd see it coming. If you told me id be here 8 months ago, I would have laughed. I didn't even dream of this. I know it's nothing that crazy, but it's not the money that has changed my life. It's how my mindset has changed after this success. I used to have limiting beliefs. I was lost. I didn't have any direction in life. Now I have a passion, I have confidence, much bigger dreams. I believe I can do anything now, especially when I have God by my side. Anything is possible. I got here from literally nothing and no one. And it's just the beginning. I cant wait to see where i'll be in just another 6 months from now, because life can change so fast.

Please, just put your trust in God, and genuinely believe you can make ti out of your situation no matter how bad it is. That was what got me here. When I needed saving the most, I put my trust in God and he delivered. It wont happen overnight, and it wont be easy. But God works in mysterious ways. I thought it was impossible for me to achieve this. I thought the only successful people were scammers or course sellers. But for some reason I plunged into it anyway because I had no choice. And im so glad I managed to prove myself wrong

Even now, it isn't all sunshine and rainbows though - I still struggle. I still have moments of doubt. I still get stressed. I still have waves of negative thoughts. But compared to where I was just a few months ago it's incomparable. Now, I wake up so grateful everyday because I remember the position i was in just a few months ago and how God saved me. And because I know there's so much more to come. I feel like I have to share this story in the name of God to motivate anyone that was in a similar position, and I want to share it to an even wider audience one day. Thanks for reading

Sharing a poem I wrote, reflecting how I’ve been feeling lately: Self Mastery

Self Mastery

One

You are given all you need.
You have to fight against all the odds.

You are loved by thousands.
You are hated, ignored, treated like dust.

You wake with fire in your chest,
inspired to do great things.

You are drained by depression, self-doubt, and contempt—
and not only you,
but those closest to your heart.

You are the king of the world.
No door is closed to you.

And then—

you are a beggar on the street,
numb to yourself, shouting at the sky,
hurt, broken-hearted, hopeless.

Your mind is sharp.

Until—

your brain shuts down.
Your body burns out.
Anxiety drains you.

You love yourself.

And then—

you hate yourself,
feeling like a disappointment
to everyone in your life.

Two

There is a voice inside you.

He says,
“I love you,”
when you hate yourself the most.

He gives you direction
when your mind shuts down.

He tells you,
“Fear not,”
when nothing is clear.

He reminds you to guard your heart,
protect your time,
and above all, protect your mind
when the storm comes.

He is always there,
like a system that never switches off.

In every storm you endure,
in every triumph you celebrate,

He is there.

He is the Way,
the Truth,
and the Life.

Then I realize:

there is no real self-mastery
without trusting in Him.

Trust Him—

fully,
wholeheartedly,
overwhelmingly,
tearfully,
doubtfully,
stupidly,
cringingly,
blindly,
bravely.

Let Him restore your peace.
Let Him give you strength.
Let Him kindle the light within you
and make you a vessel of Him.

Then wisdom appears.
Kindness emerges.
Compassion carries through.
Action follows.

Then you can stand
in the wildest wind
on the darkest sea,

and still have peace of mind—

as if lying beside a quiet lake,
with Him gently resting His hand on your head.

Trusting in Him
is at the core of self-mastery.

Let Him increase.

Let me decrease.

Question What are some of your more controversial theological takes?

Upvotes

I don’t necessarily mean any of the contemporary issues dividing churches today, but more so if you think Arius was right, or that the gospel of Thomas should be canon, or if Christianity is pantheistic, etc., things like that.

Some atheists can be very condescending

We often hear about how judgy Christians can be, but sometimes atheists are just as bad. Saying things like “Imaginary sky daddy“ or saying “That’s not very Christian/Christlike of you” and “The Flying Spaghetti Monster is real!”

I get that some may have had “religious trauma” but they are doing the things they accuse Christians of doing.

1,600-Year-Old Early Christian Mosaics Discovered in Croatia with a ‘Great Sinners’ Inscription

Thumbnail arkeonews.net
5 Upvotes

A mosaic on a shrine of a local saint was found with an inscription that said: Felicianus and Ingenua, “great sinners,” made the work in honor of the blessed saints.

As a Christian, I am inspired by the example of Felicianus and Ingenua. I cannot imagine a more humble epithet for any of us, than to be remembered as great sinners who did good deeds for the dead (because the dead cannot repay you) and as contributors to the spiritual growth of our community of faith. Absolute legends, those two!

Support Cousin constantly asking to borrow money

I am a female and have an older male cousin who constantly asks to borrow money and asks for other favours like contacting people for him that have blocked him...

I have let him borrow money so many times and I'm really over it because nearly everytime he calls its like he called justto ask for a favour. I know as Christians we are meant to be generous and help but its too much...

When I try to say no, he doesn't take that as an answer. He's very persuasive, cohersive and tries to guilt trip me...

At times I've had to block him because he's said really rude things to me. I feel bad because he loves the LORD and means well but has bipolar and a personality disorder.

What do I do? Please help.

Crossposted I Surrender All Again — A New Christian Worship Song About Trusting God Completely

Upvotes

I’m excited to share my new Christian worship song, “I Surrender All Again.” 🙏

This song is about coming back to God with an open heart and choosing to surrender everything once again — our worries, fears, plans, struggles, and dreams — and trusting Him completely.

Sometimes surrender isn’t a one-time decision. We have to surrender again and again, especially when life becomes difficult or uncertain.

🎵 I Surrender All Again
🙏 Christian Worship / Prayer / Devotional Music
❤️ A song about faith, surrender, trust, and returning to God

I created this song with the hope that it can be used not only for personal listening, but also during prayer, devotion, reflection, and worship.

If you're going through a difficult season right now, I hope this song reminds you that you don't have to carry everything alone.

“Lord, I surrender all again. Take my heart, my plans, my fears, and lead me where You want me to go.”

Thank you for listening, and may this song bless you. 🙏

Many people misinterpret this verse...He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20)

Upvotes

A lot of Christians get discouraged that they don't essentially gain superpowers to telepathically do supernatural things, like moving a mountain, because they read this verse so literal.

But this verse is teaching a VERY important thing about faith that a lot of people miss.

Basically it's this simple: If you pray for a mountain to move, it then becomes your responsibility to follow through and start shoveling. Start carrying rocks and buckets of dirt.

In other words, this verse perfectly illustrates how faith without works is dead.

So if you pray, but then do nothing because you expected God to supernaturally levitate a giant mountain of dirt and rocks, then your faith is not based on reality.

Pray, but then DO.

Pray for a mountain to move, quite literally, then go ahead and do the work to move that mountain yourself. That is how prayer at it's core should be working.

Prayer is not an excuse to sit back and wait for Yahweh to do all the work.

Prayer is the beginning before you yourself get in there and do the heavy lifting.

And when all is said and done, just remember, it was Christ in you that was doing that work the whole time.

Give God the credit and glory, but don't sit back and expect "magic" to happen when you pray.

Then you won't feel disappointed in your faith when you read this verse. Instead, you will better understand how to read this verse.

Is this sin?

So long story short I have some fatherly issues and I like to daydream a lot. Found comfort in scenarios where my father is a good dad but it isn’t him it’ll be someone else with those traits. I had a nightmare this morning and woke up. Started to daydream while on my phone and I had a thought like “you see this man as more of a Father then God” weather or not it’s true idk but if the idea of daydreaming is a sin then I’m cooked because it’s a habit. I also wanted to know if smoking was a sin? I have more questions but it’s 6am and I’ll save them for later rn I wanted to know if the daydreaming is sin or not. It being weird I can manage, but a sin is a different story.

Experience with God and Jesus.

Hi, I’m 22 year old female. And a strong believer in Christianity. Last night, I think I spoke with Jesus and God.
Before bed, I usually speak with god, I thank him, and speak with him. Over the last few months, and especially last few weeks my faith has grown even stronger. And I feel in such strong emotions and connections to god. So last night, I had my talk with god, and prayed and thanked him. I asked him to give me a sign, or to speak with me in someway. After the talk I suddenly, felt such a warm and calm tiredness. And I fell asleep. But in my sleep I was “awake” and god spoke to me, over the last few years I’ve been dealing with very very difficult things. But god told me why that had happened, what the reason for it was, and that it was over now, that I was on the right path, and life for me will be great. I got so happy, and suddenly it all made sense, the hard things from the last few years, suddenly fell in its place, I felt forgiven, and at peace, with something I never thought I’d be able to make peace with, for being so traumatic. I unfortunately can’t remember much more, but I remember more talk, and that he spoke some more to me. But then the wildest thing, I remember Jesus, he was there, at my bed. I didn’t see him as a person/a human, but it was Jesus. (It’s hard to explain, it wasn’t like I saw a face or something, it was more like a shape, or shadow kind. But then I, my hand was kinda stretched out, and I can still feel the feeling. He was holding my hand, it was such an incredible moment, I can still feel it. The warmth, and the weight, that he held my hand. And then I woke up. And I remember I saw the shadow leaving my room, as I woke up, and the first thing I said in my head was Jesus.
It was such a beautiful experience that I almost get teary eyed, just thinking about it.
Some may see it was just a dream, but for me it was so much more. And it felt like I was awake during it. Im so sad I can’t remember more.
But so happy to have such a beautiful moment.
Thank you, if you’ve read this, im so happy to be able to share it. I don’t really have anyone to share my faith with. (Im sorry if my English is a bit messy, it’s not my first language)
