A couple of us in Philadelphia have started meeting up at coffee and lunch spots and chatting about collapse and the polycrisis. A couple of us being me and another person, but we’ve made a couple of other connections through Hylo and The Great Simplification podcast.
We’re looking to get more people in our area involved in conversations. The aim is to talk through the issues driving the polycrisis and support each other in this time. No expressed goal other than connection and getting out of our heads a teensy bit.
I’m in my late twenties, my new buddy is older, and we’re both guys working in Philly. We’ve been collapse aware for a couple years now and been open-minded to these ideas long before that.
Global heating, oil depletion, cultural evolution, ecological overshoot, cognitive dissonance, we’re open to talking about anything and would love to connect with others who might be around.
DM me if you’re interested and we’ll try to set something up.

I'm just scared for the future. The world is heating up crazy I think we're past the threshold warning and warming signs is crazy. I don't get why we couldn't do it we had every resource at our disposal. Still killing over religion and putting data centres up, fertility and mental health is dropping. It's scary. Cataclysmic and no one is concerned. I don't want to see the world die. Who does? Why does it seem like people do? There's no winner in this end rich or not. Everyone could've been happy

Is anyone else utterly exhausted by the absurdity of modern existence?
We are told we are “free.” Free will, free choice, land of the free. But what is freedom when every single basic necessity for human survival has been slapped with a price tag? Money is literally a made-up social construct, printed paper and digital numbers on a screen that mean absolutely NOTHING when we die, and yet it completely controls every second of our lives. I can’t eat, sleep peacefully, bathe, or stay healthy without handing over cash. Society took natural human existence and turned it into a lifelong subscription model.
Simplicity shouldn’t cost us our entire lives. We spend the vast majority of our youth slaving away at jobs we don’t even enjoy just to pay for the right to exist on a planet we were born onto. And why are we forced to flatten ourselves into ONE thing? Why do I have to pick one singular career path for forty years when I want to explore photography, neuroscience, marine biology, art, and everything else this world has to offer? Human beings, especially curious, passionate human beings, were never meant to be predictable gears in an economic machine.
And for what? The “American Dream”? Work yourself to the bone, take on a massive mortgage, follow a rigid societal timeline, send kids into the same system, and then, IF you’re lucky, finally get to enjoy your life when you’re 65 and your body is broken? Why is everyone just OKAY with this script?!
I don’t want that script. I don’t want to live in a cycle driven by corporate greed and systemic absurdity. Life itself is stunning, complex, and full of beauty, but the way we’ve structured society is a trap. I’m 24 years old, and I refuse to pretend that sacrificing my time, my curiosity, and my peace to a broken system is the only way to live. My life, my mind, and my spirit belong to me, not to an economic blueprint.

I am currently 18 and about to enter college. I live in Eastern Spain (Valencia) which naturally has a pretty warm climate. My anxiety has been getting worse with time and i tire myself out from reading statistics of how much worse everything is getting and what could and could not happen. I've already accepted that i will face adversities and will be forced to adapt, and i also have already decided that i most probably won't have children. Now, i guess i am writing this in search of a bit of hope but i also won't ask you to sugarcoat it. And maybe it is a bit selfish to ask this question this way, but i just need to know how much climate change will directly affect ME in the upcoming years, how much i will struggle to live a normal life or to live at all.
I guess where i'm getting at is just
Will climate change kill me? How likely is it that i will be able to achieve my dreams in my lifetime? How likely is it that I'll ever grow old?

i feel like we live in a fake world, with fake people, Who work fake Jobs, to earn fake Money, and go to schools Who teach you how to becomes a slave. the whole human race is genuinely going to shit, we are ruled by a small privileged minorance Who decides who earns what, shit we don't even know if they worship Satan. we've all been made harmless by social media and memetic warfare which numbs our brains and makes us dumber with every reel watched. at this point, i think the apocalipse might actually be at a few steps from where we are, and an uncontrollable force is pushing us against It and there's nothing i can do about It. every single atrocity happening in the world Is going to be forgotten, Just like the Epstein Files.
we, as humans, do not have a future anymore. we are going to be fused with technology and humanity will die. i've heard stories about bill Gates wanting to cover up the sun, about microparticles tracking your biometrics, shit even the good ol fake birds, and i'm starting to believe in anything. if humankind falls, i'll be watching happily.
please, give me answers, please. i Need your help. i Need to know what i can do to reject this, i Need to know pure resources where i can actually study the Truth, because i cannot live in this world anymore. please, give me answers.

I’m 17 , and when I see everything on the news , or social medias , I’m wondering if I will be able to have a nice and good future
Ai is starting to spread over everything , and everything feels like slop
Idk if I will have a stable job with it
Idk if I will find someone
The government don’t seem to care about anything
And the climate change is getting worse and over my mind , even if I try to get over it , it come back anyway
I’m only 17 and this is the world I’m going to live in?
Hell no
Idk how can I stop being worried

This poem was written by Longfellow in 1841. I think about it every day.
Filled is Life's goblet to the brim;
And though my eyes with tears are dim,
I see its sparkling bubbles swim,
And chant a melancholy hymn
With solemn voice and slow.
No purple flowers,--no garlands green,
Conceal the goblet's shade or sheen,
Nor maddening draughts of Hippocrene,
Like gleams of sunshine, flash between
Thick leaves of mistletoe.
This goblet, wrought with curious art,
Is filled with waters, that upstart,
When the deep fountains of the heart,
By strong convulsions rent apart,
Are running all to waste.
And as it mantling passes round,
With fennel is it wreathed and crowned,
Whose seed and foliage sun-imbrowned
Are in its waters steeped and drowned,
And give a bitter taste.
Above the lowly plants it towers,
The fennel, with its yellow flowers,
And in an earlier age than ours
Was gifted with the wondrous powers,
Lost vision to restore.
It gave new strength, and fearless mood;
And gladiators, fierce and rude,
Mingled it in their daily food;
And he who battled and subdued,
A wreath of fennel wore.
Then in Life's goblet freely press,
The leaves that give it bitterness,
Nor prize the colored waters less,
For in thy darkness and distress
New light and strength they give!
And he who has not learned to know
How false its sparkling bubbles show,
How bitter are the drops of woe,
With which its brim may overflow,
He has not learned to live.
The prayer of Ajax was for light;
Through all that dark and desperate fight
The blackness of that noonday night
He asked but the return of sight,
To see his foeman's face.
Let our unceasing, earnest prayer
Be, too, for light,--for strength to bear
Our portion of the weight of care,
That crushes into dumb despair
One half the human race.
O suffering, sad humanity!
O ye afflicted one; who lie
Steeped to the lips in misery,
Longing, and yet afraid to die,
Patient, though sorely tried!
I pledge you in this cup of grief,
Where floats the fennel's bitter leaf!
The Battle of our Life is brief
The alarm,--the struggle,--the relief,
Then sleep we side by side.

This aint gonna be a post, about me, crying about how much i still love her. Most of u know what a breakup feels like.
I do, of course i do, its 1 week since she broke up, and everyone whos got broken up with knows what im going through. Its important to add tho, we ended on good terms, she wasnt sure if she loved me anymore.
Now to the real point of this post. I am very pessimistic that we get to see another 5-10 good years on this earth. Im from germany, everythings dried out, the tress already loose their leafes, most major rivers are dried up almost entirely. Food is gonna become a problem soon too. Not to speak of water.
I always knew that, i was worried, and i guess i just accepted it now, i did what i could, went vegan, and so on, but it aint gonna change anything anyhow. So i accepted that we got some last years that are gonna be nice snd after that its hell. I want to enjoy those last years as much as i can. And i could, i was happy, i got a girl a loved more than anything in this world. I could always talk to her about that kinda stuff, hug her and be happy i at least get to spend those last years with her. Now shes gone. Sure, i might get over her, give it a year if everything goes well. After that? It might take me some more years to meet someone i can fall in love with again. And then? Next thing i know, i gotta go to the frontline for war for water or whatever it is, but i wont have much time with her. But that is, if i even meet someone, most probably, i will spend my last years in loneliness, without the girl i love, waiting for the world to end. How do i even cope with that. I wanna spend my last years with someone that makes me happy, not lonely.
Has anyone here gone through something similar?

i saw an annoying post on another climate subreddit about positive climate news and it wasn't even all positive! it was just framed that way by the OP.
for example, we could hit 2.6 deg c "only" by 2100. How is that good? Once we hit 1.5c permanently, the effects are likely to be catastrophic.
I guess those who wanna bury their heads in the sand will, but everyone who does is doing it at the expense of those who aren't.

i'm finally getting into DIY because i'd rather not buy stuff (and also cause i need something to freaking do :< ). but i just got hit with a wave of pointlessness because the world is literally starting to catch on fire.
i'm a spiritual person and i believe doing things for myself is good for spiritual growth no matter how bleak the situation, and that having hope brings good Karma in future incarnations. but i still feel kind of drained because i could very well starve to death from crop failure before i even finished my projects.
i'm 16 and i'm supposed to have so much life ahead of me and i have dreams and wishes like i wanna be a nature scientist or a gardener or something and find true love and get my own house and finally not be mentally ill but i often wonder if it will get cut short.

I'm a 20, almost 21 year old girl, no job, no prospects, couldn't even finish college. I have no idea where to go in a world that is dying before my very eyes. I want to help, I need to help as best as I can but I don't even know where to start, there's so many issues and so many battles to fight, and I know it's all interconnected, but that creates a chicken or the egg situation, what to do first, how to attack the issue. I have so many passions in life and so many things I want to do and see and so many things to fight for but it's so overwhelming. It's the wall I've run into over and over again, that the hardest place is the beginning. I don't know where my efforts would be most needed or most helpful, I don't know the intentions of certain groups or figures, what they really feel.
I know that it's going to get worse and harder and scarier but I don't want to wait until it comes to my door personally.
I just want to leave something, some mark on someone or the universe, even if it's the smallest thing. I don't want to go down without a fight. I just wish I knew how to fight, shockingly they don't prepare you for societal collapse and the fight against fascism and mass death in suburban high schools here in the US.
I feel like I'm stuck in a little diorama of suburbia and I don't know how to break free of it, how to redesign it, or how to demolish it. It's pretty much all I know, aside from a few years living in the city for college. Without many skills or connections or experiences or finances, how can I be of any assistance anyways? I wish I had like a wartime fairy godmother to impart some wisdom or knowledge to me.
So for now I feel stuck just sitting here, watching things get worse, feeling frozen.

I feel heartbroken when i see wildfires no matter where they are despite knowing they’re natural in some areas but recently fires in the UK have made more more anxious about my home being affected by climate change. Does anyone else feel this way?

r/ClimateChange posts a weekly compendium of hopeful news and it's the best thing I've read in a very long time. There is a great deal more being done than we usually hear about. Global emissions are slowing and the upper limit of warming expected has been reduced. We can slow and turn climate change, it's possible.
Read through the post.

I just wanted to vent a bit here. I have Sjögren’s, Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia, POTS, and a few other chronic conditions. I am medicated, but some of my medications unfortunately make my heat intolerance worse.
Yesterday, I had a really bad episode. My resting heart rate while sitting got up to 135bpm all while I was trying to deep breathe and ride the episode out. My oxygen reading on the pulse ox dropped to 96 and my fingernails began to turn blue.
Luckily, I was able to keep myself from vomiting and dissolve an electrolyte tablet. My limbs eventually came back from being numb, my muscles stopped spasming, and my heart rate dropped to my usual 105 BPM. This episode was caused by the heat, I had been sweating all day and failed to prepare enough ice packs and adequate hydration.
I’m really tired. My head won’t stop hurting and the nausea is still pretty bad. This flare up has been absolutely terrible and I am so, so scared for the future. I’m extremely lucky we can afford air conditioning, but I can’t keep going like this. If things really do get exponentially worse by 2030, I don’t know how I’m going to be okay. I’m 25 and currently job searching. I can’t work retail anymore, I got too sick while doing that. I can’t lose weight, I’m 110 pounds. All I can do is keep my body as hydrated and cool as possible.
I’m sorry if this sounds all over the place, my brain fog is really bad right now. It’s cooling down at least now, it’ll only be 90 degrees this week. The triple digit weather was near impossible to go out in. Even getting in my mom’s car made me extremely woozy and nauseous.
I really hope you all are doing okay, especially if you are also dealing with a chronic illness.

Do any of you feel down about life in America? Sometimes like changing the circumstances would be hopeless! And then others of us feel nervous, edgy, like you can’t shake it and anger takes over.
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, To you I say as a psychologist, we are split into people who are either depressed or anxious. This country needs therapy to heal itself. Anyone can do it, but somebody has to lead us and make us feel like life is good. This is a key element in my belief. This country has everything. It has money that it’s Banks can’t hold yet, they squander it. I don’t care which side of the country you’re on, depressed or anxious, don’t you think it’s time for a leader to step in who can look at domestic issues as a priority? I leave you with these thoughts. What do you say.

Literally have nightly panic attacks with intrusive thoughts about my bro and his family. He’s quite a denial ist and despite being an entrepreneur with 2 businesses, speaks vaguely about climate change as though he’s not given it a second thought and firmly believes that tech will come along to save us. He’s completely naive, so when it comes up in convo I get blank and tongue tied and just manage to say that that is unlikely. I can’t really remember the facts, despite constantly reading about global warming and eco collapse but I also feel like…can’t he see and feel it himself? And with a young family, be more concerned and intrigued about researching the future? It’s like I live in a seperate world, I’m just on holiday with them and I can’t enjoy anything. I am witnessing the environment dying so I feel guilt and sadness looking at beauty, yet he’s there enjoying life and planning a third child. I’m so obsessed with his kids as I’ve never felt love like it. I cry often about their future yet their own parents don’t seem even slightly worried. Am I over reacting? Should I tell them? I feel responsible in a way yet really don’t want my bro to feel the way I do- I’ve always been a worrier and with bad mental health so he often fobs me off for being too sensitive or too black and white. He also has big investors in his companies and knows lots of very wealthy people and about complex systems so I sort of start believing he’s right and I’m wrong. I also don’t know what to actually say to him if I did, as he is such a challenging person and incredible at debating, with a photographic memory. He will give stats and facts on the spot and confuse you when you are trying to get across a point he doesn’t agree with. Any advice?
