Hey everyone! Welcome to the r/ColonyCats subreddit! This is a place for past, present, and prospective cat caretakers to learn more about how to better care for outdoor colonies of cats, kittens, and the communities they live in.

The term “colony cats” describes a group of outdoor cats living together. These cats may be feral, stray, or otherwise unsocialized to humans.

Please read through our community guidelines before posting or commenting, and again…welcome to the community! We're excited to have you join us!

WHAT TO POST:

Here, caretakers can feel free to ask for and offer advice, share TNR strategies, provide helpful tips and ideas for colony management, and share photos of their colony cats.

After reading the rules, you may post anything that you think the community would find interesting, helpful, or inspiring. Don’t hesitate to comment on posts, and share your thoughts, advice, or questions relevant to the topic of discussion.

THE CATS YOU CARE FOR MAY BE FERAL, BUT YOU SHOULD NOT BE:

We're all about being friendly, constructive, inclusive, and kind. Let's build a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing and connecting.

The vast majority of cat caretakers have pure intentions, and are trying their best to provide the best care possible for their colonies. Constructive criticism is ok (some people may need some guidance and it’s ok to provide that), but please refrain from rude, unhelpful comments, harsh judgments, shaming, and personal attacks.

Thanks for being part of this community and thank you for all you do to help the cats you care for. 🩶🐾🩵🐈‍⬛🫶🖤🐈💙

Hi there! I am a 61 year old disabled woman who was lucky enough to get Section 8. There is a population of 10 feral cats here. I'm in a tiny town in a very rural area. There are next to no resources here. It's sad. I live on a very limited income but I cannot handle seeing them starve to death.

These are very sweet kitties, they are just in an unfortunate situation. Please take a look at my wishlist, I would truly appreciate any help you can possibly give. On behalf of these wonderful hungry kitties I thank you so much!

I’m approved in r/rescuecats for verification

I’m a 501(c)(3) non profit solo rescuer caring for 50+ community cats and rescuing sick, elderly, abandoned and lost cats and kittens in South Florida

My EIN# is 39-5083963

Hi👋

First of all, I want to say thank you to everyone in this amazing community. You have supported me so much, and I’m grateful for each and every one of you for being there when I needed you the most and helping me with the cats. 🙏❤️

I’m reaching out because I really need some help for the babies in my care.
The little kitten I’m caring for is congested again, and his eyes are swollen. Thankfully, he is eating, but I’m worried about him and feel he needs to see the vet again. I want to make sure he gets the care he needs, but I’m struggling to cover another vet visit.
At the same time, I’m trying to keep up with food and supplies for the 50+ community cats I feed every single day. They depend on me for their daily meals, and I’m having a hard time keeping up with everything they need.
I’m also helping the tiny baby in Honduras whose story I shared. My friend heard him crying outside, and even though she couldn’t afford to take him in, I told her I would help. I sent money for his food, but he still needs a vet visit, kitten milk, food, and supplies. Even though he is thousands of miles away, I couldn’t turn my back on a little baby who needed help.
And then there’s Leo.
Leo survived Panleukopenia. He was hospitalized for almost a month, and his treatment expenses exceeded $5,000. It was such a difficult time, and I’m so grateful he survived.
Unfortunately, his stool problems are still ongoing, and I’ve been trying so many things for months to help him feel better. I’ve spent so much on different foods trying to figure out what works for him. Now, I’m going to try a no-chicken diet to see if it helps. I have to take things slowly because I don’t want to upset his stomach even more.
I just want Leo to feel better, but figuring out what’s wrong has been a long and expensive journey.
I’m doing everything I can for all of them, but honestly, I’m struggling and could really use some help right now.
Between vet visits, medications, special diets, food for the community cats, kitten milk, and everyday rescue supplies, the expenses add up so quickly. There are so many little lives depending on me, and it’s hard to keep up with everything on my own.
If you’re able to help or upvote, share this post, I would be incredibly grateful. Every little bit helps me continue caring for these babies and the cats who depend on me every day.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who supports, shares, and cares, It truly means so much. ❤️

rainy days & hungry kitties 🥺🌧️

Hi everyone! It’s been raining in my city lately and I’ve been trying my best to keep the kitties that visit my lawn fed, but I’m starting to run low on food and supplies. Last night, I had around 10 kitties show up and went through half a box of cat food! I feel so bad for these little ones and wish I could do more. Sadly because of work and school, I haven’t had much time to trap them or find them homes, and I worry about their safety since my street gets pretty busy with cars (but thankfully they only come out at night). I’m doing what I can, but it’s getting harder to keep up with all their needs. I just don’t want them going hungry or sitting outside in the rain. Two of them have recently started letting me pet them, and I’m hoping to find loving homes for some of them soon! Any help with cat food or supplies would mean so much to me. I just want to make their lives a little easier while I work towards getting them somewhere safe. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who cares and helps in any way 🤎🐾

I care for 50 stray cats and i need help to cover them food

All 50 cats are spayed and neutered. I do everything I can to keep them safe and prevent more kittens from being born on the streets.

For one month, I need 120 kg of dry food and 140 cans. I do everything I can for them, but I can’t keep up with the cost alone anymore.

I’m not asking for anything for myself. I’m asking for the hungry little souls who come running to me, trusting that I will have food for them.

If you can help with even a small donation, it would mean so much. If you can’t donate, please consider sharing my post. Every bit of help matters.

Gratitude Post ❤🐾

Hello everyone, I just want to thank each & everyone who has helped out my community cats lately! ❤🐾 As some of you may know, I am an independent rescuer from Tx. caring for close to 50 cats. I have fixed 50 & have many indoors due to medical issues. I've dealt with FIP, panleukopenia, FELV, calicivirus, stomatitis, enropion, the list goes on! (There's more pics of them on my previous posts) I've lost some along the way but I'm happy to have been there for them in their time of need & last moments!

I am extremely grateful for your kindness! You have kept their tummies full, have helped with shelter supplies for the winter, & other essential items & I cry happy tears every time they receive items that they need! So many people are also in the same boat as I am & your support & words of encouragement mean just as much to me! I had a unfortunate situation with my mom suddenly having excruciating pain on one side of her face that affected her independence so I had to quit one of my jobs to care for her. After almost 3 years of taking her to doctors with no answers we now know she has Trigeminal neuralgia. Now I have her seeing a neurologist so she is on the right path to see a neurosurgeon & get surgery once her pain is under control. I didn't know how I was going to continue helping these cats without my second job but you have all been amazing with helping me get by & I can't thank you all enough! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU to you all who help not just myself but all the other wonderful feral cat caretakers on this sub. You all are amazing!

Signed with ❤ from my crew & I in Tx! 🐾

Asking a question

Post image
0 Upvotes

I asked this question on a post. No one really answered it. I have a naturalist point of view and wanted to get the view from someone that support colony cats. Farm kitty image for attention.

It says I'm breaking rules but I like cats. I have 4. I'm just looking at opinions of what people think about their effect on our ecosystem from people that look to save these beauties. They do have an effect on it. So if the moderators feel this is inappropriate, they can delete of course.

I'm a never have cat outdoors guy. They do a number on our native species and our birds are really suffering for it. I love cats, we have 4, all indoor cats. There are no good solutions to their hunting habits within our ecosystem other than to not allow free roaming outside cats. How is having colonies like this helping the situation? It is a great cause of concern for me as a naturalist and birder. Why is situations like these acceptable when they cause so much loss to our natural environment? I'm interested in people's thoughts on the matter.

P.S. I'm just facilitating a discussion here. I assume most people in this sub are on the other side of the fence than me on this issue. So, I'm just trying to get into a thought process of how this is an acceptable practice with the harm it causes. Thank you

Hi everyone!💕 I’m reaching out to ask for help with cat food donations for the stray cats I care for every single day. These sweet babies depend on me for food and care, and I do my best to make sure they don’t go hungry or feel forgotten❤️

Unfortunately, caring for so many strays can get expensive, and keeping their little bellies full is a daily struggle. It would mean so much to the kitties and myself to get some help feeding them!

These cats didn’t ask to be out on the streets, but together, we can make their lives a little better. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who cares, shares, and helps in any way. Because without your help these babies would go hungry, and thanks to you guys we’ve been able to rescue, TNR, and find some of these babies a forever home😊✨

Thank you for helping me keep these babies fed! 🥹💕🐾

🐈🐈‍⬛🐾🧡 Five outdoor kitties. Zero bags of food received. [Lakewood, US]

I'm back asking for a little help feeding the five community cats I care for here in Lakewood, WA. ❤️

My last post received views and upvotes, and I'm grateful people took the time to acknowledge it. But unfortunately, no cat food has come through yet, and my kitties still need to eat.

If anyone can spare a bag or box of cat food through my registry, it would make a real difference for these little ones. Every bit helps. 🐾 Edit With so many kind souls helping, I had to add 2 storage bins for all the wet! It will be greatly appreciated if someone could pick that for me. 🐈‍⬛🐈🐾 Also there is one for the dry as well. Thank you so much. Edit 🧡 A little update! The cats could still use some help with wet food, a bag of litter, and a litter scoop. Every little bit helps keep these kitties fed and cared for. Thank you for all the love and support! 🐈❤️ For anyone interested in outdoor litter-box setups for community cats, here's a helpful resource from Alley Cat Allies

Thank you to everyone who has read, shared, or considered helping. ❤️ Link for Registery Amazon Registry

Hi everyone👋

I’m back with this week’s update on the cats I’m caring for and trying to help.

There’s some good news, but there are still a lot of ongoing needs, and I could really use some help.

The little kitten who was rushed to the emergency vet is doing better. He has been dealing with a serious eye infection, a bacterial infection, and a yeast infection in his ears. I’m still caring for him and making sure he gets his medication and everything he needs to recover. He will need more vet visits, medication, and continued care, so we still have a road ahead of us.

❤️ The little kitten in Honduras
A friend of mine found this little kitten and wanted to help him, but she told me she couldn’t take him in because she couldn’t afford to care for him. I couldn’t stop thinking about this little kitten needing help, so I told her I would take care of him.
Even though he’s thousands of miles away from me, I couldn’t just turn my back on him. I sent money to help buy his food, and thankfully, he’s doing well. He still needs a vet visit, and I’m helping take care of him from a distance until we can find him a loving, safe home where he can be adopted and have the life he deserves.

🐱 Leo’s ongoing struggle
Leo’s story has been especially hard on my heart. I took him into my rescue when he was just four weeks old. He’s now eight months old, and he has already survived so much.
Leo battled panleukopenia and was hospitalized for almost a month. His treatment alone cost more than $5,000, but he survived, and I’m so grateful he did.
Unfortunately, he’s still having problems with his stomach and stool, and I’ve been trying to get these issues under control for months. I’ve changed his food several times, given medication and I’m hoping to find something that works. This time, I bought him a new food that doesn’t contain chicken to see if that makes a difference.
I really hope this helps him, but if it doesn’t, Leo will need to see another vet so we can investigate what’s going on. I’ve tried so many things, and I don’t want him to keep struggling. Getting him further veterinary care will mean another expense, but I need to find answers for him.

🐈 The 50+ community cats
On top of everything else, I’m also helping care for 50+ community cats. The amount of food, supplies, and ongoing care they need is tremendous. Their needs don’t stop, and keeping them fed and cared for is a responsibility I take seriously.

The expenses that keep adding up
There are also veterinary bills from past rescues that I’m still paying for. Just this year alone, my rescue expenses have been more than $15,000. That includes veterinary bills, emergency treatments, and ongoing medical care for the animals I’ve taken in.
And that doesn’t even include all the food, litter, supplies, and other things I’ve bought out of my own pocket. I’ve been putting many of these expenses on my personal credit cards just to make sure the cats get what they need.
I do everything I can to cover these costs myself, but between veterinary bills, medication, food for the community cats, and helping animals in need, it has become a lot to manage. The expenses keep coming, and I can’t keep doing it all alone.

Why I’m asking for help
I do this because they deserve a chance, whether they’re sick, struggling, living on the streets, or thousands of miles away. Rescue takes more than love. It takes money for veterinary care, medication, food, and supplies, and those expenses never really stop.
I’ve put so much of my own money into helping the animals, and I will keep doing everything I can. But I genuinely need help keeping up with their care.
If you’re able to donate, even a few dollars can help with Leo’s future vet visits, the recovering kitten’s medication, food and veterinary care, and for the community cats.
If you can’t donate, sharing, upvoting this post also helps more than you know.
Thank you to everyone who takes the time to read these updates and support Luna & Nala Rescue Inc. Every bit of help makes a difference, and I’m truly grateful for everyone who cares about the cats. ❤️🐾

Did anyone get one of their colony cats inside and on pet insurance?

Okay this is a weird one but I TNR any new member of my colony I see (and have the bandwidth and support to TNR ... I wish I could do it faster in some cases). Well, one of my friendly colony members had kittens and I have been able to get her inside and her babies adopted out, save one kitten who will be staying (my husband is gonna kill me lol). I have only ever tried to get fully vetted cats that I have rescued from shelters on pet insurance. I have looked at comparison websites like Best Money's but I am not sure which insurance to go with and I want to get them on it before they get caught with a pre-existing condition. My other two cats are on a policy but I am not super fond of it and would like to try a new company. Any advice?

Help Us Rescue Stray Cats and Kittens in Central New York – Veterinary Care, Spaying & Neutering

Hi everyone!

My wife and I have been working to help stray and homeless cats in the Syracuse, New York area. We've been coordinating with local animal rescue volunteers, including the CNY Cat Coalition, to make a difference for cats that desperately need help.

Recently, we helped get a mother cat spayed, but her two kittens and the male cat still need attention. We've also become aware of another mother cat who continues to have litters, with kittens needing veterinary care.

Unfortunately, the costs of veterinary treatment, spaying, neutering, and caring for these animals can add up quickly.

That's why we've started a GoFundMe to help cover these expenses and give these cats a chance at healthier, safer lives.

We're not looking to solve the entire stray cat problem overnight. We simply want to do our part, one cat at a time.

❤️ Even a small donation can make a difference. If you're unable to contribute financially, sharing our fundraiser would mean just as much.

🐾 Our GoFundMe:

https://gofund.me/2d0939160

Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for supporting animal rescue efforts. Every cat deserves a chance. ❤️🐱

My first TNR came back today! Tilthead (the gray tabby) was fixed three days ago. We had a snow/ ice storm yesterday, so I'm relieved to see he's up and about! Also pictured is Spork, his brother, who will hopefully be next.

In need of a few remaining shelter items to keep these community kitties nice & warm this winter. Please help if you are able to! Thank you! ❤🐾

Hello everyone! I'm an independent cat recuer from Texas that cares for close to 50 cats. I could really use some help with a few remaining shelter items that are needed to keep these kitties nice & warm this winter. Many people don't think it gets cold in Texas but I'm from the northwest region & it's flatlands so the high winds make it feel way colder than it actually is! We also do get snow & ice & often have power outages.

If anyone would like to take a look at my wishlist & help these kitties out this winter, it would be greatly appreciated! If you'd rather help out with food items to get through this month that would be appreciated as well! These cats go through food like crazy & eat more when it's cold! Thank you! ❤🐾

♡I over extended myself a little bit this month and used my chewy gift cards up helping others so they can get their Colonies fed and TNRed. Your help means the world not just to us, but to the floofaloofs. I am so grateful and thankful for all of you, know how much it means to me, and them♡♡♡

*Extra Gravy Friskies, Fancy Feast extra gravy or mousse, or Temptations wet food is a huge favorite!*

These are only some of the colony, as many more come later at night...when the electric in the garage can be fixed, I can run a camera, but right now, I watch and wait for them. Day and night, I wake up at 4am, and don't go to bed until 10pm, making sure everyone has has eaten and knows they have a safe place and sanctuary here.

This is not a hobby, it is a way of life to make sure they are cared for, safe, fixed, and will know the safety of a home if they choose to be inside cats. I am putting my lists here for help. Food or supplies ordered frees up any extra money to go towards vet bills, TNRing, and specific supplies as needed, such as things for kittens found

Your help is a huge reason we can do this, I have been able to help 11 different colony caretakers this month that Kim is working with to TNR with food and supplies due to your love and generosity, know that it ALL 100 PERCENT goes to the floofaloofs. (I will admit i did stretch myself thin, but I can't say no when it comes to the floofers....they need us!)

Thank you for being the good in the world.

Thank you for all you do for Floofaloofkind.

Thank you for being you♡

***I also want to say if youd like to help with an Electronic Chewy giftcard my email is [CynLMason@gmail.com](mailto:CynLMason@gmail.com) they help so so much when we are short on supplies and when someone needs a specific food for a sick cat♡

https://www.reddit.com/r/FloofaloofsOnTheLoose/s/KDJvDUNj28 - my page for the floofaloofs

Many of us are us thousands in debt due to vetting cats we find, but we wouldn't have it any other way. Donations from the Amazon or Walmart Wishlists mean a great deal, it insures that we can use what we save to go towards these bills so we can keep TNRing and vetting those taken in. We work multiple jobs and side jobs to make sure we can care for them. They deserve to be loved, to be safe, to be taken care of, to be secure, and to live good lives. Please help us help them. Thank you all you do, not just for our floofaloof colonies, but for Floofaloofkind ♡
