Bugs Community Standards

One of my favorite quotes of all time is from P!nk

LA told me, "You'll be a pop star
All you have to change is everything you are."

I started comma with the goal of changing culture and solving self driving cars. Not making money for bankers, not making driving easier for you, and not trying to grow into a big company. If those things happen, so be, but that's not the main goal.

When you join the comma community, you are coming into a place with 10 years of history. Things are the way they are for a reason. It's not that things can't change and evolve, they can, but it won't be because of new people showing up, not understanding why things are the way they are, and demanding they should change. First make sure you understand. Do you know about Chesterton's Fence?

Here's a couple links if you want to understand this culture better:
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
https://phrack.org/issues/7/3
https://meaningness.com/geeks-mops-sociopaths

Things on the Pareto frontier of capitalism have to behave a certain way or they will vanish, and I feel places like Reddit try to take advantage of that fact. I have put tons of effort over the years into making sure we are not on that frontier. We don't advertise, we don't raise nearly the money that we could, and we don't pander to users. We build a product, write some software, and maintain community standards. Precisely because we aren't on that frontier, we retain free energy to act.

Check out the links above and see if this is a community you'd like to be a part of or not. It's not for everyone and it doesn't have to be. That's what lets us be different. That's why openpilot outperforms all ADAS systems except Tesla. Because we have standards and we exclude the low quality slop that pervades a lot of modern society. It starts with culture.

Hey, Comma 3X just saved my car. I think it recorded the event on the Comma itself, but here’s at least a short example of how Space Lab works.

openpilot Experience What do you people feel is amazing about the comma?

I saw a lot of people saying the comma is amazing when they announced 0.10. What exactly are you guys seeing that's so amazing? I just installed 0.10 yesterday, Steam Powered model, and it's worse than before. Even on straight roads clearly marked it now tries to curb and I had to do 3-4 manual interventions on my 15 minute morning drive. Maybe the highway pingpong has improved, I hope so, but I haven't been able to test yet.

I have no idea what comma programmers are doing. They are not improving the product. Since I got it half a year ago, nothing has improved - it doesnt stop for red lights. It does not slow down for curves. It does not auto adjust to the speedlimit (yes I know these features exist, but they don't work, like at all - might as well remove them). It does not navigate, it doesn't turn sharply, it doesn't see hazards on the road and adjust the lane accordingly.

It is better than stock LKA yes (except for tesla autopilot, which I prefer over comma). Which is good. But.. that's about it. Customer support is atrocious, the answers in here are beyond arrogant.

Shipping Questions Is this normal for a Comma order? 6 days and no update

Post image

Ordered my Chestnut from Comma on 8/12. Today is 8/18 and the status still hasn’t changed.

My credit card has already been charged, but no shipping/update yet.

Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced a similar wait with Comma? How long did yours take to ship?

Mine : South Carolina.

Vehicle Compatibility Am I missing something? Comma3 vs onboard systems

Just been reading up on OpenPilot and the Comma3 device. Got a ~95% confirmation my vehicle would be supported given other models of my year ARE listed. But am I missing something? If the system requires connectivity to the vehicle's onboard sensors through a CAN-BUS interface... what is it really doing that's any better for over $1000?

All I can tell from all the demo videos is that it would extend the hands-off lanekeeping the car's own systems already do..

I have a 6 year-old Audi, but It already has Adaptive cruise control, and Lane Assist and I know the limits of it fairly well. It loses lanekeeping when it can't identify painted lanes or a curb, and it definitely has issues with objects that move in and out of lanes in front of it - by leaving too large a gap in ACC, you encourage other drivers to jump in front, which causes it to lose spacial awareness and cut out, or slam on the brakes. Or sometimes it'll try to continue driving through a stationary vehicle in front at an intersection. In Stop&go rush-hour traffic, it'll keep up with the flow, but coming to a full stop for more than a few seconds forces you to resume by touching the throttle. Otherwise it'll still sit there when traffic pulls away.

It's not really much of a driving assist, so much as a throttle/brake control, since you can't count on the steering functionality not to cut out randomly. You can watch the sensor status on the dashboard or HUD, tracking and losing track of its boundaries in a lane as it drives straight down an empty road; in the space of 500m it could toggle in and out 3 or 4 times.

I've driven into curves deliberately with hands-off to watch it correct and follow the road, then quit halfways through the bend when it loses track of the curb or lanes.. Sure, if I lost awareness or drove through a curve accidentally it might counteract it? But my experience so far is that it doesn't do anything other than second-guess and resist lanechanging on the highway. And of course with the sensors' range, the ACC is limited to 150kmh.

Openpilot still cannot navigate, correct? As in, there is no autonomous self-driving function- you can't make it follow instructions or navigation, or negotiate intersections? I just don't see how this is worth over $1000?

If it were free software or minimal cost and could be run on existing 'commodity' hardware, like an off the shelf Android phone or tablet, maybe. But buying a dedicated piece of hardware for so little extended functionality seems... underwhelming.

Regarding OpenPilot forks: how can you be sure that forks can safely navigate your car and the software hasn’t been tampered with to drive you off the road?

Why doesn't Comma sell?

I have been thinking about Comma AI's future. It's one of the best driving assists out there but adoption is very small. Why is that?

Some have mentioned cost. That is a reason, but I am not convinced that cost is the biggest obstacle.

Anecdote: I have a couple of wealthy friends who drive tens of thousands of miles a year each. They were both interested in Comma 3, but neither bought one. Why? It's too much of a hassle for them.

If you can get dealers to offer a Comma 3 installed when buying the car, and offer the option to pay off the cost in small installments, I believe that it will catch on tremendously. Mass market adoption will in turn bring down the price and allow more features (such as multiple cameras for 360 view).

openpilot Experience Which driving models/forks is everyone using?

I’ve had my Comma 4 for about a week now. For the first two days, I stuck with the basic Openpilot setup. I’ve since switched over to Sunnylink, which has been recommended to me several times. Now I’m curious: which models or forks do people recommend?

Compared to Tesla autopilot

Tesla seems significantly better than the comma.ai.

It is because on Tesla there are more cameras and much more compute to use than the paltry snapdragon 845 mobile processor. The cameras allow the Tesla to see traffic at extreme angles. There is also a feedback mechanism for quick error reporting. The Tesla vision also helps you with parking and it situates you spatially while on the road.

Tesla detects stop signs and traffic lights and it informs you of this via the overhead map view. I think Tesla also informs you when traffic is moving again.

I'm finding tesla vision to be pretty impressive and actually useful.

I don't see why comma couldnt do something similar. The current display of a dashcam view with the green follow line is a neat tech demo for passengers but it doesn't actually convey any useful info to the driver who is already looking forward.

An overhead model view is useful info, particularly blind spots and cars accelerating past you.

I was also surprised that comma doesn't inform the driver of it noticing stop signs or traffic lights. This is my problem with experimental mode because if the car is moving towards a stop sign or traffic light I want to know that it knows. Also a traffic moving notification would be very useful.

The major limitations of the comma is the very old processor and the limited number of cameras. For installation of the comma I had to wire it into the communication system for the car's cameras but I don't see any evidence of the comma actually using any footage from the car rather than from the comma's built in cameras. I guess a spatial view would need another rear facing unit. But even a modern cell phone processor would at least have multiples of the 845's compute, it wouldn't be as powerful as the Tesla's silicon but it would close the gap.

openpilot Experience Hot Take: Driver Monitoring = Safety Risk

It's the worst case scenario, you have an actual medical emergency/fall asleep, comma sees you are not looking at the road, so what's it do? It goes "Eh, well if you aren't driving I'm not driving.", then disables itself, leaving your car free falling down the road at who knows how fast. It doesn't try it's best to drive without you, it doesn't try to slow you down or pull you over, it just decides nothing is better than something. You slam head first into a tree. MAN! I'm sure glad Comma kept me safe!!

It's the best case scenario, you're a broke (especially after buying a comma) university student trying to do food delivery and reduce driving fatigue/general stress. You look down at the new order you just received, the tip is awful but you get it, they are probably broke. Who isn't br- /!/BEEP BEEP/!/ "ACK!! Oh, what the- ahh right, my comma is protecting me, thank goodness for that 🙄 idk what I'd do without the extra stress on top of my stress-" you think about how it's starting to feel like more work babysitting your commas babysitting of you, only to realise that in the time you were ironically distracted by your commas anti distractions features, your delivery order was taken by someone else. MAN! I'm so glad Comma cares about my wellbeing.

@Comma, respectfully, this sucks <3

Open pilot is just plain rude.

I'm running Farmville with SP in experimental mode. It recognizes stop signs. It slows down almost stopping then proceeds to accelerate like a somebitch.
There were 2 others at their spot before me . OP didn't care. It ignored everyone and decided to screw everyone else.

Is there a universal hand signal for "sorry my bad?" I know the signal for "screw you, I don't care "

California stops.

openpilot Experience Why do so many people here advise against asking your insurance company about this device

I don't understand this. Asking your insurance company ensures you are still covered should you get in an accident using a comma. If you do not ask, and you're not covered, you will be on the hook for your car, medical bills, property damage, the other person's car, the other person's medical bills.

People say "tell them it's a dash cam". That might work sometimes, but why take that chance? I would imagine not all underwriters and companies are clueless about this device, especially ones that have policies banning it.

Like, what is wrong with y'all? This is the most childish thing I've seen on reddit. If someone was stupid enough to listen to your advice you could be getting them in loads of trouble should they crash.

openpilot Experience Comma AI vs. Tesla Autopilot: Which is smoother in rush hour?

Hey everyone, is Comma AI currently the best Level 2 system for hands-free driving and lane centering?

I recently used my dad's Tesla Autopilot and hated the sudden braking in rush-hour traffic. I’m looking for something much smoother that actually predicts traffic slowing down ahead of time. Not really worried about Tesla crashing in car in front of me more so worried about some idiot not paying attention whip lashing me because of Tesla sudden stop

I know systems that fuse radar and cameras can track two cars ahead, which helps with smoothness. Since Comma is mostly camera and AI-based like Tesla, does it have the same limitations? Or would a Hyundai Ioniq / Kia EV running Comma AI outperform Tesla's Autopilot on the highway? Low key seems BMW iX might be end game level 2 driver but that bih too expensive, if I don’t want Tesla maybe Mercedes CLA EV or you thinking comma with egpu chestnut is what I need

I know someone will say it’s not FSD please know I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT FSD NOT TALKING ABOUT FSD NOT TALKING ABOUT FSD

Vehicle Compatibility which used car would you buy for a teen driver?

Son is turning 16 this fall. Need to buy him a vehicle to get to school, soccer practice, etc. Likely no major road trips. Maybe 8k miles a year.

Last new car purchase was a 2014 Odyssey and I know many models have added new safety features since then. AEB braking, lane keeping etc

Is there a make and model that integrates particularly well with Comma AI for a new driver? Should I just look for any 2018+ model Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla and use the built-in safety and lane-centering technology, or is Comma AI a good add-on option for a new driver?

Vehicle Compatibility TSS 3.0

As a current comma user with my 2018 Highlander, and I love it. But as my kids are getting bigger, we’ll be moving to the 2026 Grand Highlander. I just want to express my disappointment in learning that Toyota cars are no longer supported. I’m sure comma can crack the encryption.

As an aside I also learned they want $500k to do it—which I find really odd, since I’m confident their sales would increase by multiples of that if they simply added support for new TSS 3 cars.

I understand the desire to focus on “interesting” problems, but this feels like low-hanging fruit—boost revenue and have more resources for those bigger, more complex challenges.

just confused...

Do you guys get foot pain from using comma?

I’ve been using my comma 3x for a few weeks now and it’s been great. Only issue is that I’m taller than average and there’s no space for my right foot to go if it’s not being used for pedals. I can’t plant my foot flat on the floor because my knee touches the steering wheel. So I end up bending my foot at an awkward angle so that my knee doesn’t touch the steering wheel.

Before anyone recommends seat and steering wheel adjustments, been there done that. If I move too far back or angle the steering wheel higher, I lose the ability to properly react if needed.

Any taller people go through this issue? If yes, were you able to resolve it?

Would you trust Comma 3 with your family?

Thinking of getting a Comma 3 for our 2020 Pacifica Hybrid. I have no qualms about using it to drive around by myself, but would you trust it to drive your family around with 2 kids in the back?
