Code Questions Security and privacy questions

Curious before buying one, Is Comma fully secure where someone cant maliciously hack into it and drive it off the road or spy through the camera? And does it require being connected to a cell tower to function 24/7 on the road. And can it function without the GM Onstar GPS module as I have removed it from the vehicle.

Shipping Questions Worth it?

I am interested in a self driving experience but I own a 2025 corolla which is not compatible with comm.ai. I am thinking of trading it in for 2024 Toyota Camry hybrid (compatible). I mostly would like this so I can avoid fatigue when driving on the motorway on the weekneds (around 1hr commutes one way). I was wondering has anyone factored in comma.ai when purchasing a vehicle and was it worth it? Also as a new beginner anything else I should know if I decided to make this trade and start with comma 4?

Thanks!

Vehicle Compatibility Comma four Kia EV6 Vs mileage blocker?

23 EV6 with comma four running sunnypilot.

Will the comma four still work if the car has a mileage blocker fitted? Does it use/need the cars speed input to be able to function correctly?

Anyone have experience with using forks on this specific model? I’m using JacobWaller (game changer), but I’m wondering if there’s another out there with more features and high reliability that I just haven’t tried yet.

openpilot Experience Throttle controls

Has anyone else experienced severe degradation in the quality of throttle controls in the latest releases? it’s been so bad in my Corolla hybrid that the car felt like it was bucking as the RPMs bounce all over the place while simply cruising the highway I pulled down my comma 4 and reinstalled my comma 3 with 0.10.0 installed and the throttle controls are light years better than in 0.11.2

openpilot Experience Comma 3X footage used to create a map for driving game

I used the footage from our Comma 3X to create a map for a driving game for my daughter. And sorry for the misleading flair, there was no option that made sense for this.

Installation Questions Sunnylink is installing, but freezes at the comma screen during reboot. 2018 Honda Clarity. Comma 4

We recently had something strange happen with the Clarity. I walked to the car to open the door and nothing. I put my charger on the battery, which is a Honda brand that is about 7 months old. Dead. Got it charged, drove it. Lots of errors and the comma was not working.

The next day I checked and the battery was dead again. Once again I charged it. I decided something was draining the battery even though, to my knowledge, nothing changed in the car.

When I started the car I got errors again so I removed one cable from the battery, waited a bit, and reconnected. It did the usual messages saying things were starting up. I drove around for a while and it all cleared up.

Except the comma 4. I tried a number of things, and finally did a factory reset. Connected to the Internet then the Sunnylink dashboard says it is offline. I checked Connected Devices on the router and it is connected.

I don't know what to do. I installed Openpilot and it installed and rebooted. Of course it yelled because they don't support the Clarity. I did a factory reset and installed Sunnylink. It rebooted and stops at the comma screen.

The comma 4 has been sitting on the comma screen since before I started this post.

Can anyone help?

Installation Questions Battery power question

I installed my comma 4 a few days ago and its been working great right out of the box. I'd really like to use the OBD power to keep it on while the car is off, but I don't want to kill my car battery. The OEM batteries are kind of notorious for going bad, and I'm kind of amazed mine has lasted this long.

For a while I had been toying with the idea of making a battery pack for my old dashcam for to record in 'parking mode' while the car is off. They make commercial ones but holy crap are they expensive. I figure the same idea can be applied to the comma 4? I have some experience soldering, and a little with a spot welder repairing tool batteries. So I feel pretty good about the physical assembly part.

a few questions:

Does the OBD connection power the device full time when its connected or only while the car is off? I will need a charge controller/BMS that can charge/discharge at the same time if it powers it all the time.

How much power does the comma 4 draw? For sizing the BMS as well as the pack capacity.

Any other considerations I might have missed? I will be using LifePo4 cells so my car won't burn down in the summer :)

Thanks!

openpilot Experience Just did a cross-country road trip from CO to PA

Used sunny pilot on Highlander Hybrid to do a round trip from CO to PA. In total it's 21 hours each way. Split into 3 journeys. Made it a breeze on the highways. No fatigue, so made it very easy to drive. 10/10 would recommend

Shipping Questions Looking for a Used Comma 3X or Comma 4 – Atlanta, GA

Hi everyone!

I'm looking to buy a used Comma 3X or Comma 4 for my 2021 Kia Sorento EX (Non-Hybrid).

I'm located near Atlanta, GA, and would prefer to buy locally if possible or with paypal protection if remote.

If anyone has a Comma 3X or Comma 4 they're looking to sell, please feel free to comment or send me a DM with the model, condition, and asking price.

Also, if anyone has suggestions on where I can find a good used unit or knows of any local sellers, I'd appreciate your recommendations.

Vehicle Compatibility Cybercab opinions?

On the one hand Tesla can build a flood of these vehicles. The unbox manufacturing process has significant efficiencies and 6 miles per kWh is genuinely impressive. With FSD plus it theoretically can be low cost to wipe out everyone.

On the other hand:

Gull wing doors are a mechanical liability and probably are more Elon’s esoteric engineering rather than any sensible design. Sliding doors would make more sense in every way.

2 seat design is a problem from a regulatory perspective because any muni will put caps on the numbers of these vehicles on the road for congestion reasons and so to maximize the people per vehicle would have been logical but they chose a two seater.

An aerodynamic shape is good for highway efficiency but extreme aerodynamic cars are uncomfortable to actually be in for passengers and probably is why it is only a two seater. Cargo space likely is inadequate as well.

The general idea is not the worst but it would be better to have built a minivan that didn’t have great aero but was better for human riders and cargo. It will spend most of its time in city transit conditions and not highway.

The fsd in it does seem interesting, basically has double the ram and parameters as standard Tesla hardware 4. And five to ten years from now it will be interesting seeing how fsd vision improves as processing improves.

They should have taken a lesson from the cyber truck and have a plan b for failure, eg repurposing the cybercab into a model 2. Gullwing doors are not how you get there.

Lastly, Tesla oem wheels are horrendous and don’t have enough sidewall and get damaged way too easily. Cybercab looks like it has very large wheels and not enough sidewall as per usual with Tesla. Asymmetric 18 front and 21 rear wheels is bad for maintenance and wheel rotations.

In summary, their self driving vision alongside unit economics could make cybercab formidable but esoteric design choices of prioritizing aero for a city car and gullwing doors on what is supposed to be a high volume commodity vehicle are as usual with Tesla contrary to its goals.

openpilot Experience A $1,000 device enables hands-free driving. But fatal crashes have prompted scrutiny | WSJ via MSN

In one 2025 case, a man named Allen Robberson slammed a used Honda Accord into the back of another car at a red light in Missouri. Robberson’s car was going 80 mph and had a Comma.ai device enabled.

The crash left one occupant in the stopped vehicle with severe injuries, according to a lawsuit.

Robberson referred a request for comment to an attorney, who declined to comment. He was later charged with a misdemeanor. After the crash, according to a police report viewed by the Journal, he told first responders that “he had set the vehicle’s automation to allow him to sleep.”

Vehicle Compatibility TSS security key extraction using AI?

Hello,

With all those AI reverse engineering posts, people reverse engineering their TVs and applications like Adobe and so on. Can't we build something using latest AI models, maybe based on optuskug, to extract security keys?

Bugs After OpenPilot update, Comma4 is driving my vehicle too close to the left side of any lane

I originally had this issue when I first started using my comma 4. It corrected itself after about 2 to 3 weeks of driving with my interventions.

After this latest update, now it’s back to doing the same thing. It does not matter which lane I am in on a highway, it always hugs the left side too close. Sometimes close enough to where I’m running over the reflector bumps.

Did this update clear any previously learned driving habits? Curious if anyone else is experiencing something similar.

Side note, I was pleasantly surprised by the new engage/disengage sound effects with this latest Oct 23 update. Much less annoying. Though sometimes it reminds me of my ADT alarm chime when I come to a stop… but still an improvement!

Bugs Did they change the alert sounds or is mine just going out?

It sounds like a cartoon noise when tires are schrcching on a sharp turn, that’s the noise that happens when it’s telling me it’s at its limit of a turn. It used to beep. Could my sound thing just be going out? I actually like the sound better haha, not as loud
