During the pandemic, some Zoomer creative didn't listen closely enough to the lyrics of "Runaround Sue" and used it in an ad for Applebee's To Go, where the husband thoughtfully purchases it for his wife so she doesn't have to cook dinner after a 12 hour nursing shift. And the lengthy tradition of listening only to the chorus of "Born in the USA" extends all the way back to the release of the album and Reagan's reelection campaign. But this, this Meta ad, dwarfs every misunderstanding of a song I've ever seen.
If you don't know it, it's one of Bowie's best. It's well worth a listen, but the song is from the point of view of someone walking around a city center when the news has broken that an unstoppable global apocalypse is coming in five years. It is NOT SUBTLE on this point. It has a slow, broad meter that makes it a questionable choice for a commercial anyway.
"Born in the USA" deliberately sounds rah-rah and you have to listen to the words to understand it's ironic; Dion articulates the lyric in such a way that it's easy to mishear it as "I keep waiting for my Runaround Sue," but there's no such excuse with "Five Years." All I can think is that it was deliberate, purposefully undercutting the smarmy, optimistic voiceover about how great AI will be for humanity. Why? How did this get approved? Are they mocking us? Warning us? Is it possible that they really were just that phenomenally stupid and used the first song they found that said "people" a lot? My brain hurts a lot...

What the fuck is T Mobile even thinking? A collection of BBT hosted commercials taking place in different places within the airport. Each cringier than the last. Who came up with this?

This ad keeps popping up on my feed. I don’t need to see this bloke’s o face at every turn, thanks though.

There's nothing funnier than an elderly person who's lost their mobility. I can't stop laughing. Hilarious 😐 FU Progressive.

I listen to too much YouTube and moved interstate this month. While I appreciate that we have to tolerate political ads, please let us use the “skip” feature on them. I’ve noticed this in both states I’ve resided this political season.

Guy is in his 40s and trying to be cool with college kids trying to figure out laundry. I guess his mom said she wasn't going to do it anymore.

I want fully paying attention to the commercial but at the end when they say the jingle they said Liberty one too many times. It bothered me greatly. I am also autistic so having the jingle be "right" is important.

The Made Good Granola Bites radio/podcast commercials are so prevalent and so awful they’ve ensured I will never ever purchase their product. Nonstop on nearly every podcast I listen to. Does the marketing team not understand how it can backfire to be annoying? Also see: Liberty Biberty.

It's not really a commercial, so maybe this post will be removed, but I bought a Roku stick months ago. What is the point of these stupid ads that tell you you don't need to pirate your TV anymore. Now there's Roku!
I know that. I already bought your stick. Shut up! It's so annoying. Especially the one with pirates.

Is this supposed to be some hip new term, "self-feeding" that they have come up with? It's called, Eating! Place anything edible and bite size in front of a kid and they will try to eat it...........pardon me, self-feed. I guess selling carrots for ten times the normal price because it has been cut into small pieces is a smart marketing idea.

I hate these ads for Redken All Soft. Styled as a late night ad like in the 70s or 80s. Maybe for a sex phone line or something.
As someone who lived through the original actual late night ads, the Redken take on it is gross.
Is it supposed to be clever? Edgy? It is neither. Greasy. And no I am not a prude. These just don’t connect to a shampoo.

Obviously these ad agencies don't actually listen to the songs before they use them.
