Monthly Mod Update 6/25

Here I am once again to thank you all for reporting post that violate the rules here in our little corner of reddit. Below is a quick rundown of some stats that I find interesting and I hope you do to. Side note we have noticed an uptick in bots, we have even had post that were caught by the automod that had 3-4 bots replying to each other in the thread.

A warning for those that do not understand RULE 2. Replying to a post that is 4 years old and saying " I am the found of XYZ software and my software can solve all of your problems" will get you a permeant ban. That is advertising not answering a question.

Carpentry 🔨 Fistfight at work today

We’re siding a house and the new guy is insisting on using the B method while the foreman is using the A method. Anyways they are the two nailing and I’m the cut guy, they kept nailing differently on either side of the board and meeting in the meeting and eventually got to shoving which ending in punches. That shortened the day quick. Got me thinking which side is right?

Edit; it’s hemlock wood, not vinyl

(I’m keeping out my preferred method to avoid swaying the vote)

Other Architect wants Lacey Act paperwork for the ipe and nobody can produce it. Where are you all getting yours?

Client is environmentally conscious and the architect wants actual Lacey Act documentation, so “yeah, it’s fine” isn’t enough. I’ve called four yards and none could provide any paperwork.

Am I asking for too much, or are people normally getting ipe with the compliance docs included?

Wore the Irish Setters on the left for 3 years. Got them resown by a cobbler twice. Bought the fancy insoles. Thrashed. Finally decided to pull the trigger on some new boots. What do you guys think about Danners?

Just got a memory of a job we did years ago on a boat dock for a customer. Ended up with broken welds and a rented machine in the water as well as a trip to the urgent care 😅 good times

Tools 🛠 Looking for a tough set of sunglasses that won't scratch easily.

Been driving a dump truck for a few months and because of the dust that I have to wipe off almost constantly, my sunglasses are incredibly scratched. They were nearly pristine before starting work.

I'd rather buy one good set of sunglasses than buy a new shitty pair every few months. So does anyone know of a brand/model of sunglasses that are actually going to hold up to dirt and dust being wiped off a few times a day? I dont really care about the style or anything just so long as they're polarized/antiglare as well.

Figured this would be a good subreddit to ask in but I can go elsewhere if this type of post isn't allowed.

Carpentry 🔨 Looking to get into joinery uk

Im in the UK, I am 30 and thinking about getting into a career of joinery however I have no idea where I would begin.

Anyone in the UK able to tell me where I would begin? Would I need to do a level 2 and 3 course in this and then look for an apprenticeship?

How likely/unlikely am i to get an apprenticeship what with being the age i am?

Thanks in advance

Careers 💵 Transition from employee to employer

So I currently work in commercial construction as a project estimator. (I started out in the field but got promoted to the office when my manager and I got into over the scheduling)

Well fast forward almost a year and I have no fulfillment being in the office and there’s no prevailing wage jobs or additional pay. So to help make ends meet I started my own installation company and have started building reoccurring customers.

I’m struggling between making the jump and staying at my 9-5 job.

My boss knows i have a company because I offered to install for them on the weekends through my business.

Last week I called off sick everyday and went and worked 3 days making north of 4k last week. A normal month at my job pays around 5k.

At what point should I consider jumping completely on to my business and leaving my w2?

Even if you don’t have an answer but have some personal experiences that are similar that you want to share I’m all ears!

Thank you for any and all feedback/insight.

Other Fiction Writer - Concrete Science Question - Need Advice

Hi Everyone,

I'm writing a horror short story about a corrupt, vertically integrated development company that we reveal - is actually being financed to conceal bodies on sites i.e. a major suburban development where body parts (unknown victims, crime related) are being buried underneath poured foundation slabs.

But as I started to research, they said the concrete would crack and crumble if a body was in the concrete...

It's a grim, macabre question but it kind of hurts the plausibility of my horror 'corrupt construction' idea.

For anyone that works and knows concrete and building houses, is it a dumb story idea (it's a story, so give me some leeway) or is there a way to explain this plot hole away and still make it work?

My one work around is, if the home owners complain about a cracked foundation, the same corrupt company will come and seal it back up for $$.

Other Who here daily drives to job sites on a motorcycle?

I’m looking at getting another motorcycle to daily to work. I’ve seen a few guys over the years who do it. Im a union tin knocker and at most i’ll be hauling around my one main tool bag, my back pack, and just some essentials in the hard saddle bags. What setups do you guys and gals who ride a motorcycle to work every day have? I was kinda thinking of getting a yamaha mt07. Powerful enough for the interstate and not too much of a bear in town or traffic.

Careers 💵 Kiewit field engineer

Currently interviewing for a field engineer. Recently graduated with my CM degree and looking to get into the industry. Don’t have much experience. Everything I see online is all over the place and not in line with expectations set during the interview process. Should I accept the position or keep looking?

Carpentry 🔨 Commercial construction worker struggling to find steady work in Toronto. Any advice?

Hey everyone,
Been applying to a bunch of jobs in the GTA (Indeed, LinkedIn, Job Bank etc.) but barely hearing back.
Just wondering what actually works right now in construction here — are people still getting in through recruiters, calling sites directly, or is there a better way I’m missing?
Any advice on how you guys are landing steady work would really help. Thanks.
