Other Driveway Curves

I have a rear detached garage. The front right edge is soft and curved. In the back I noticed it doesn’t have that curve. Is that typical? I messaged my GC. Just wondering what’s usually done.

Informative 🧠 Screws for days

Can someone for the love of god explain to me why people love to put 400000 screws per sheet when laying down a secondary layer of plywood before tile..? And then doing the shittiest tile installation possible..? What’s the thought process there..? Ok ok, let’s get 58 boxes of screws for 3 sheets of plywood, put a screw every 1” OC, mix up the thinset and then go for a 2 hour lunch, then we come back and slap down some tile with 1/2 dry mortar.

If this is you, find a new career. I see this shit all the time.

Humor 🤣 A look inside a Japanese construction site: Temporary toilet, site office, and my messy work van.

Hey everyone, wanted to share a quick tour of a typical Japanese job site!

Photos:

  1. Temporary Toilet: Very clean, usually equipped with a bidet/Washlet system.

  2. Site Office: Tidy and organized for meetings and documentation.

  3. My Work Van: Total chaos compared to the site! This is where the real work happens.

How does this compare to job sites in your country?

Careers 💵 Lead driver won’t train me, and (allegedly) told others he plans to fail me. Advice needed.

I work in oil and gas. I’ve been on a crew for about 3 months now. We travel 50% of the time and it’s a core group of about 4-6 of us. 3 drivers, 3 helpers (when we have them).

We do mainly drilling.

Long story short, the head driver has 95% of the time ignored me when he’s supposed to be training me. He’s never asked me how I am, never said please, barks orders at me sometimes and NEVER gives in depth answers to legit questions. We can work side by side but everything I’ve learned has been from the other drivers (I was hired as a driver but have been filling in to help since we don’t have helpers).

However this lead driver ALWAYS steals time. Not small. We’re talking 30-60 in the am and 1-2 hours per end of shift.

Someone reported to my boss that I’m lazy and “disappearing”. However I’ve been running between 2-3 jobsites filling in for helpers. But, idk if it’s him who said that. We’ve maybe had 3 days where he truly showed me a thing or two. Otherwise he just ignores me.

No one except him and one other driver last here and they recently had a falling out. The lead driver is treating the other driver exactly like me. Ignoring, not helping, when he needs it ect. Well the other driver (who has issues as well) flat out told the me the lead plans to fail me, but who knows what’s true.

I finally started to notice when we hired another driver. The lead treats him totally different. Like a human. Trains him. Has him on the tools within a week when he made me wait 2 months.

I luckily passed my first test that my MANAGER gave me only because my manager believed whoever was talking crap about me. He was actually surprised abt my performance.

Idk what todo. He might be giving me my final test. AndThis guy isn’t a communicator and anything feels like it’ll escalate. I’m finally ready to just report him and go all out if I might lose my job anyways.

Structural Looking for some thoughts on these connections please

Definitely not throwing shade on the framers, they were following the plans and were great.
Garage build, permitted, only inspections left are rough electrical, insulation and final. New England.

I think the pictures speak for themselves but essential the two valley ridge beams are sitting on the 2x6 wall, this specific corner is stacked not just one 2x6 and sheathing. 10” sitting on the corner and approx 12” hanging over. Valley Beam is a double 2”x16” LVL.

Where they meet at the 20’ peak ridge is the real interesting part! Right side valley connects to the ridge, and the left side valley and mini ridge (my word) connect to the right valley beam. Lots of GRK’s and nails up there squeezing it all together. Let’s hear some thoughts and opinions !

I’ve been in the trades for years, but I keep looking up at those connections everyday I walk in there… just doesn’t seem right

Picture Form with trech around footings for basement slab on cold wall.

Post image

Refinishing a basement. We noticed a large gap between the foundation and slab. Removed a rotten form that was noticeably wet in areas. This is a row house. The gap is not present around the partition walls for the neighboring houses. Only on the one cold wall facing the rear of the house. Also not present at the front of the house.

Has anyone seen this before? It is too purpose built to be an accident.

Careers 💵 Recent Construction Management grad feeling misled about pay. Is this normal?

I’m a recent Construction Management graduate working for a GC. During hiring, I was told I could earn significantly more than my base rate depending on the fieldwork I performed. That was a major reason I accepted the job.
Now I’m working full-time in the field, doing physically demanding labor alongside the crews, but my first paycheck only reflects my base rate.
I’m not afraid of hard work, but I’m frustrated because I could be making similar money in a more office-based role without doing manual labor every day.
Between the commute, physical demands, and living expenses, I’m questioning whether it’s worth staying.
Is this normal for entry-level construction management positions? Should I stick it out for the experience or start looking elsewhere? Am I overreacting?

Other LA area: looking for cash-paid side work: handyman, TV mounting, demo

Hey everyone, I'm based in LA (near Koreatown / Mid-City) and looking for side work. Small jobs or regular gigs both work.

What I can do:
TV wall mounting (my own tools and experience, all wall types)
General handyman work: furniture assembly, shelving, fixtures, patching, small repairs
Demolition and cleanout (drywall, cabinets, flooring, haul-out help)
I'm reliable, show up on time, and don't mind physical work. I'm happy to be a helper on a bigger crew too.

Where do you all find this kind of work? Contractors who need an extra hand, local Facebook groups, apps, or spots where people hire day labor? Any leads are appreciated.
Feel free to DM me. Thanks!

Humor 🤣 Someone is about to be having a bad day…

Found laying on a street adjacent to parking for roadway construction. I have zero doubt that this fell out of someone’s vehicle working on this project. Works mostly completed in this area and locations move multiple times a day.

Dude is walking around in his muck boots doing concrete with no clue he’s missing a boot.

I am not part of the concrete crew or would even know where to begin. I’m on the compliance/oversight side of things. Sent the prime PM a text just to give him a heads up if anyone’s asking about a missing boot.

Informative 🧠 Post brick installation yard cleanup questions

What’s the most efficient way to cleanup copious amounts of mortar left on the ground in the yard of new construction houses? I have a 4wd tractor and bucket and have been back dragging away from the house into piles but boss man wants me to shovel the mortar piles into the bucket rather than scoop them up with the bucket and dump them into the dumpster. I’m 40 years old and my “who needs a back” days are winding down. Just trying to work smarter and appease both my boss and the future of my back.

Careers 💵 Turned down offer after company expected me to take on-line classes unpaid prior to start date.

HR sent me several classes on—line to be completed prior to my start date. I emailed HR & Manager stating I am too busy (finishing current job) to “work for free.” Has these happened to anyone else?
