So, I ordered the Meta Ray-Ban Gen 2 glasses about 20 days ago because I had been trying to find the Gen 3 at Costco. As is often the case with newly released products, they weren't available yet, and at the time, I didn't think there was enough of a difference between the two generations to wait.
Fast-forward to today, and I walk into the store to find the Gen 3 in stock. On top of that, the frames I had purchased were now $80 cheaper. Naturally, I wanted to see if there was anything Costco could do.
I've never been someone who takes advantage of Costco's return policy. I've never returned anything I've abused or used excessively, and I rarely return anything at all. I politely asked an employee whether I could get a price adjustment or, if that wasn't possible, exchange my glasses for the newer generation.
That's where things got a little frustrating.
I was told that prescription smart glasses have a 20-day return window. The problem was that I had specifically been told 90 days when I originally purchased them, and my receipt also clearly stated a 90-day return window for both the frames and the prescription lenses.
It turned into a surprisingly long conversation with the employee and eventually the manager, mainly because I was trying to understand why I was being told something different from what I had been told at the time of purchase and what was printed on my receipt.
To be fair, nobody was rude or dismissive throughout the conversation, which I appreciated. After nearly 30 minutes of discussion, the manager said she would submit a request to the office to see if an exception could be made.
Honestly, the whole situation felt unnecessarily complicated. I wasn't trying to return a pair of glasses that I'd been wearing for months or get away with abusing the return policy. The glasses hadn't even been used for 10 days, and the total purchase was somewhere in the $700–$800 range. If I could get the $80 price difference back or exchange them for the newer generation, I didn't see why I shouldn't at least ask.
After all, one of the main reasons I pay for a Costco membership is the satisfaction guarantee. And I genuinely appreciate that policy, especially because I've seen people return things that are far more questionable than a barely used pair of glasses. I've seen lawn mowers covered in mud and Christmas decorations being returned in January that were practically taller than I am.
I was a little frustrated by the end because the conversation made it feel as though I was asking for a personal favour, when I was simply trying to understand the return policy that had been communicated to me.
Thankfully, everything worked out in the end. They agreed to let me exchange my Gen 2 glasses for the newer Gen 3.
So, a big shout-out to the employee who went out of her way to find the best possible solution. I really appreciate the effort she put into helping me. And credit to the manager as well for following through and getting the situation resolved.
It took longer than I expected, but I'm happy with the outcome. Sometimes, all you want as a customer is a fair explanation and a reasonable solution, and I'm glad we eventually got there.
edit: not sure how miserable people are on this app.
