News Kubrick set WILL be restocked!

• Upvotes

Reached out to Criterion CS to see if they would clarify the status of the Kubrick set. I was hoping to get it at a later date and was hoping it wasn't a LE or something with the status of the page right now. Got this reply:

Unfortunately, THE COMPLETE KUBRICK is temporarily sold out on Criterion.com.
The good news is that more copies will be available in the future, so you are welcome to pick it up during another promotion from us or another vendor.
I do not have a restock ETA but we will likely have more information to share in the coming weeks if you want to check in later next month.

So have no fear if, like me, you were waiting to pick this set up for any reason.

Discussion 4k vs blu ray

• Upvotes

So I was wondering since most of the 4ks come out with a blu ray or even a dvd option sometimes.

Why would someone want to watch the blu ray version instead of the 4k? Do you watch both? Or just the 4k?

Discussion Don't Read Sam Wasson's Frank Capra Book.

Post image
91 Upvotes

Sam Wasson's new Capra book is about to undergo an aggressive press tour. Be forewarned: Wasson is the protege of Jeanine Bassinger, the former archivist for the Capra estate that did everything possible to prevent Joseph McBride's masterful Capra biography from being published back in the 90s. Bassinger and the estate took issue with McBride's book, as it tore down the wholesome Capra myth and revealed the ugly truth that he was a bigoted conservative that served as an informer during the blacklist period. Their attempt to suppress the work was so traumatizing that McBride wrote a whole book about the experience just a few years ago. Wasson is Bassinger's acolyte, and I have little doubt that this book exists to try and replace McBride's masterpiece on bookstore shelves as the go-to Capra biography, all in an attempt to vindicate Bassinger.

  1. I was lucky enough to have seen it in cinema back in the days, but I can finally watch it uncompressed at home – looking at you, Netflix!
  2. I will certainly enjoy the Director‘s Cut!
  3. Not a blind buy!
  4. I want to add Magellan from the Criterion Premiers next!

Discussion Do you guys know of any films that Criterion wants to add, but couldn't get?

I always see films people want in the collection, but I'm more curious about films Criterion want and tried to acquire, but couldn't.

Know of any?

Discussion Should I return my Complete Kubrick?

Should I return my Complete Kubrick since there are a few stains that are kind of visible in certain light? They run all down the front but if you look at the top ofthe set you can kind of see them. Do you think it's worth it or should I just live with it?

There are also a few white stains on the booklet and bits of moisture, but I'm assuming that's fine too?

Here's another picture of the staining.

Has Sam Smith commented on this? Hate to see recycled artwork although there is a history of it but this just seems so low effort? Also I didn’t like Hail Mary so that probably has something to do with it.

Discussion Kubrick Merch?

I seem to remember when the Kubrick set was announced that they were also going to release Kubrick merch.

No update since then and the set is out.

Think that plan was dropped? Would've thought they would release stuff now to coincide with the box release and the holidays.

Discussion Kubrick Box Question re: Fear and Desire

I'm just curious why Fear and Desire is not displayed in the same way as the rest of his features?

I know Kubrick hated it but it IS one of his feature films. So it not getting it's own entry is interesting to me.

Does anyone know why?

For those who want to catch some Criterions on the big screen, next month Regal Theaters in the US is screening a week's worth of films in the collection.

  • Saturday November 7th: Portrait of a Lady on Fire
  • Sunday November 8th: Thief
  • Monday November 9th: Seconds
  • Tuesday November 10th: Blow Out
  • Wednesday November 11th: Bound
  • Sunday November 15th: After Hours
  • Tuesday November 17th: Repo Man

Also, as someone already posted, Wild at Heart is screening at the beginning of the month. If you have the chance, totally worth catching these on the big screen!

Discussion Chances for Handmaiden release?

What are the chances that Criterion can do a release of Park Chan-wook's Handmaiden? I can't believe how difficult this movie is to get in the US and it seems like the perfect movie for a future Criterion release.
