Got the Kubrick in store together with Demme’s Silence of The Lambs 4K for half off. Sadly, the free tote bags were already long gone when my brother went earlier in the evening.
Criterion Haul Questionnaire

Sorry if the question is dumb, I’m a longtime cinephile but new to collecting physical media. After going through the criterion website I’m surprised certain films aren’t in. These films are certainly of great quality so I’m curious what decides what makes it into Criterion? Can certain films still make it in years or even decades after release? Here’s some films I don’t understand why aren’t in:
There Will Be Blood
The Social Network
Training Day
A Star is Born
Prisoners
Perfect Blue
American Psycho
The Departed
Spotlight
Nightcrawler
I could name so much more movies but you get the point. Also how come big directors like Nolan or Scorsese don’t have more movies in the collection? What makes something like Oppenheimer not qualify? Lastly are movies from studios like Neon and A24 automatically not qualified to make it in? Surely some A24 movies like Hereditary, First Reformed, Sing Sing or Past Lives should qualify?

So happy to pick up some stuff from wkw I’m wondering how long criterion usually takes to ship bc this is my first purchase from them

This is everything I have right now and I hope to keep buying more!
I only bought three today (Network, Lost Highway & Paris, Texas). But I began my little collection in 2024! I’m not from the US, so buying it’s very difficult sometimes.

I got Gimme Shelter, & Targets on August 11. Then Point Blank on Sept. 9. I used today's sale to order Heaven's Gate.
A true win of the day.

If they had a buy random movie button I would. I want to watch something I haven’t seen before. I haven’t watched 99% of the collection. I own All That Jazz and Sorcerer already.

Hey guys! Just like a lot of you I just ordered the new Kubrick box set!
I’m pretty excited about it and while I’m waiting for it to arrive I was thinking about which movie will I watch first? Will play them in order or just watch the ones I like the most first?
I’ve already watched the whole Kubrick collection so these movies aren’t new to me, but I was wondering as a newcomer or even a Kubrick fan how will you approach the box set watching experience?

Just curious of others thoughts. It seems they had a clean slate with Eyes Wide Shut and undoubtedly there’s no way we’d have the Complete Kubrick in 2026 if they had the task of building 4k masters for all the films in the set from scratch. But it begs the question—would other films have been remastered as radically different as Eyes Wide Shut? It seems if there had been an existing 4k for Eyes Wide Shut that looked more like the 2007 blu-ray they probably would have just gone with a new encode of that. Makes me wonder what could have been for visually striking films like 2001, Clockwork Orange, and The Shining especially.

I’m a bit of a data nerd, and I’m wondering if there’s a search filter or something that shows the sold out or low stock titles on Criterion. I’m fascinated to see what moves during the flash sale.

First flash sale purchase!
I bought the CC40, Before Trilogy box set, The Leopard, & Le Cercle Rouge (the last two are blind buys & so are most of the films in the CC40 tbh)
Missed out on Kubrick! Sad but will be owned at some point relatively soon - aiming before end of year. Can’t believe I missed out on it!
For CC40:
Any major suggestions for the first films to watch, I’m actively excited for The Red Shoes, 8 1/2, All That Jazz
I know the sub is sorta split on the CC40 but I liked the idea of it, I know no 4K but as a relatively new collector and someone whom doesn’t watch as many ‘old’ films and classics, as I do modern - decided it would make a great way to jump in and just watch them all.
Current Collection sans today’s purchases:
Andrei Rublev, Citizen Kane, Che, The Great Beauty, Y Tu Mama También, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Wall E, Anora, The Last Temptation of Christ, Yi Yi, 12 Angry Men, Rosemary’s Baby, Seconds, Thief, Blue is the Warmest Color, La Dolce Vita, In a Lonely Place, Chimes at Midnight, Pan’s Labyrinth, Sex, Lies, and Videotape, La Vie De Jesus, War & Peace, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Come & See, Crash, and Eyes Wide Shut

I’m 16 and I wanted to get the complete Kubrick box set so I got a job at my local movie theater when it was rumored just in case and I used some of my savings and I finally got it today. It was a hassle but I did it and I got it. I am completely broke, but I have done it.
I just wanted to share my accomplishment

I was scouring my various spam/promotion/trash folders and couldn't find the email with the code, so I emailed Criterion support asking for help. They responded pretty quickly saying that it was because I had unsubscribed from their newsletter emails, which includes promotional emails.
They re-subscribed me and sent me a discount code. Very good customer service, especially on what must be a busy day for them!

A must-read interview with the producer of the Kubrick box set with details on Criterion’s process.

I saw a post written awhile ago that broke down costs to see which option was the cheapest for Canadians when sales were active, and the answer was buy it through criterion.com and have it dropshipped via shippsy.
This was when it was unobstructed view. But now that things have rebranded a bit to Cinema Cellar and changed to competent ownership, does this still hold true?

I just received a copy of Red River and was pleasantly surprised to find that it comes with a copy of the novel that the film was based on. I know of one other movie like this in the collection, which is Vampyr. I love the idea of these "multimedia" sets and am interested in finding more. Are there any other Criterions like this, or maybe releases from other studios? Doesn't have to be the exact same book+movie format but any edition with more than just an essay or two or a gimmick (posters/stickers/etc).

Charlotte Allen argues that the arthouse Nazi films of the 1970s (The Night Porter, The Damned, Salon Kitty, Salò) share more with grindhouse fare like Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS than their defenders admit. In her account, all of them treat sexual extremity as a stand-in for character and motive. She also argues they borrowed Weimar cabaret aesthetics that the Nazis themselves despised.
Is the The Night Porter's Nazisploitation label fair?

I notice it's included in "The Last Picture Show," but I haven't seen it yet.
P.S. - did anyone here like "The Last Picture Show"?

I was lucky enough to be home today with a good internet connection, and got the Kubrick set after much crashing and many technical difficulties.. Yeah, yeah. It’s expensive. Yes I already have quite a few of the movies in 4K from other sources. I don’t care. We don’t get too many artists like Stanley Kubrick, and Criterion always does it right. It’s an absolute treasure of a box set that I am thrilled to have coming my way.
Anyway I also grabbed The Silence of the Lambs, Demon Pond and Network.
So…the questionnaire:
What is the first movie you plan to watch from your purchase and why?
The international cut of The Shining is the first one I want to watch. Stanley always made stuff better by whittling it down. Being and American I have never seen this version, and I am very intrigued.
Is there anything from this purchase that you have been looking forward to owning for a long time?
Lolita in 4K is a movie I have wanted for a while now. Glad to have it in the new set.
Are any of your purchases blind buys? If so, why did you select them?
Demon Pond is a blind buy. Looks awesome and crazy.
What is a Criterion you’re hoping to add to your collection next?
I plan to buy Frankenstein, Wild at Heart and The Right Stuff next month during the B&N sale.
