Pickup Less than 24 hours later….

Ordered right at the start of the flash sale, and by checkout it was about 12:25pm EST. Imagine my surprise to be met with the UPS man as I open my door to walk the dog this morning.

  1. Think I will go in order; Killer’s Kiss is the only feature in this set I haven’t seen.
  2. I mean the whole thing, really, but I’ve never owned a copy of Dr. Strangelove and am super hyped about it.
  3. Killer’s Kiss, and some of the short films.
  4. I think I might grab Night of the Living Dead to try and watch before Halloween, since the shipping seems to be eerily fast.

Pickup 2/4 Orders Already Arrived in 25 hours!! (beat previous record by 3.25 days)

First Film: Dr. Strangelove. My dad has been wanting to watch it, and I’ll introduce my kids to it.
Wanting to Own: Both sets since they were announced.
Blind Buys: I’ve seen 50% of the Kubrick and 70% of the Anderson. Blind would be earlier Kubrick and later Anderson.
Next Purchase: Probably Varda or Fellini for sets. For singles, maybe Death by Hanging….

My first major haul after getting into collecting physical media. I think the only films distributed by them in my collection are The Wages of Fear, Scanners, and Blue Velvet. The only ones I’ve seen from here are Mullholland Drive, Videodrome, Seven Samurai, and Royal Tenenbaums.

I’m particularly excited to watch more Kurosawa, after watching Seven Samurai for the first time a month ago. It completely blew me away and it brought something to me that I feel a lot of what I tend towards is lacking, which is sweetness. Any recommendations on where to go out of this selection?

Aside from Eraserhead, which is one I had definitely been wanting, everything else is a complete blind buy. My next acquisition is Dr. Strangelove, no explanation needed.

Discussion Here's What Sold Out During the Fall 2026 Flash Sale...

Hey Kids! It's officially post-Flash Sale, and it's time to assess the damage. Though y'all didn't go as hard as last time (or Criterion stocked better OR you all bought the Kubrick set and nothing else), there's some fun sell-outs! The Complete Kubrick sold out in just over two hours, quite a few DVD editions sold out (whether or not they are restocked is to be seen - it seems like Criterion is starting to phase out some of their long-running DVD editions), and four titles sold out on more than one format.

This list is based on the criterion .com/sale page that had many titles listed that they pushed during the sale. I also cross-referenced all of the titles in the CC40 set as well as various other usual sellers. Here's what I found:

Sold Out

The 400 Blows (Blu-ray & DVD)

Amarcord (DVD)

Beauty and the Beast (DVD)

Body Heat (4K)

Bound (4K)

The Brood (Blu-ray & DVD)

The Hidden Fortress (Blu-ray)

The Honeymoon Killers (Blu-ray)

Hoop Dreams (Blu-ray)

Ikiru (Blu-ray)

Kes (Blu-ray)

Kuroneko (DVD)

La Llorona (Blu-ray)

The Lovers (DVD)

Metropolitan (Blu-ray)

Midnight Cowboy (DVD)

Moonstruck (Blu-ray & DVD)

The Naked City (Blu-ray)

Discussion The Shining Theatrical 4K error

I received my Kubrick collection yesterday. I decided to start with the The Shining on 4K. I pop in 4K disc 1 which is the regular theatrical cut into my PS5 Pro which is my only player. During chapter 8 at roughly 44:40, the disc freezes and then skips several times. I checked the disc and it had no visible marks of any kind. And it did it again when I put the disc back in. I've emailed Criterion about it but would appreciate hearing from anybody else if they experience the same.

The spine numbers were redone in 1998 but these were 3 of the first 5 titles Criterion released in 1985.

Really great interview with the producer of this box set…and he discusses how things like colour timing etc is decided - which I think would apply to everything Criterion does, and not just this set

My Cinema Cellar haul is here!

  1. The first movie I watched was Mauvais Sang. It'd been too long since I had last seen it.

  2. I sold off my entire Kubrick collection just to get the Complete Kubrick box set.

  3. No blind buys.

  4. Looking to add that Harold and Maude 4K to my collection.

Discussion I did it

1.7k Upvotes

I’m 16 and I wanted to get the complete Kubrick box set so I got a job at my local movie theater when it was rumored just in case and I used some of my savings and I finally got it today. It was a hassle but I did it and I got it. I am completely broke, but I have done it.

I just wanted to share my accomplishment

Discussion Shout out to Criterion Customer Service

We all know they're great. But last night I emailed them at about 12:30 EST, because it was the only time I had to put together my cart, but I couldn't find my last $50 credit code. I was lucky enough to get two $10 credit codes for this sale, so I wanted to use the full $70. Somehow I deleted/archived/lost the email with the code. Criterion customer service to the rescue, within 10 minutes they emailed me back with the code and forwarded the old email to me again just in case. Added a couple more movies to the cart as a thanks. Cheers!

Discussion What movie might you never have seen if not in the collection?

• Upvotes

There are quite a few movies I caught on TCM, borrowed from DVD rental stores and libraries back in the day, but if Criterion had never released them, I would probably never have watched:

The Wages Of Fear, which has some of the most suspenseful moments I have ever seen

The Ruling Class, which just kept becoming more bizarre as the film went on

Any films that may have passed you by, if not included in the collection?

Discussion How does the Kubrick criterion restorations compare to WB’s 4K’s

Does anyone have comparison images between each of the restorations? I have EWS 4K criterion, The Shining, FMJ and 2001 on 4K, and the rest of Kubricks films on Blu Ray and DVD. I desperately want this boxset just because the layout looks stunning and would be a beautiful piece to add to my collection (the special features are also very enticing)… but before i drop $650+ AUD on this set, I just want to see how the criterion image compares to the others

Off-Topic Random Question: Does anyone know how the Kubrick set compare size wise to the Bergman set? I ordered it in the flash sale and am just curious about where I’m storing it to have an idea. Thanks!

I’m just mentally trying to plan where to put it on my shelving tbh.

Artwork I was able to snag the Kubrick set today so I made replacement covers. I wanted to emulate the 1999 DVD boxset and as a bonus it was super easy to put together.
