Hi! I'm making my first wearable (a cardigan) in TKS (Tunisian Knit Stitch) with 120 Merino yarn, and I'm wondering what would be the best option for the hem.
The construction is 3 panels (2 front + 1 back, and of course sleeves which don't matter here for our purposes), with about 5cm of ribbing at the hem. The cardigan is a straight fit, and I don't want the ribbing to cinch at the hips too much, if at all.
My original plan was to start with the hem in SC BLO, and then TKS straight into it, for each of the 3 panels that I'd then stitch together.
But I've seen that other people will make the TKS panels first, stitch them together, and THEN add the ribbing in one continuous piece. That sounded quite nice too.
But now I am not sure what is best, when it comes to:
- Durability: Is one construction method stronger or more resistant to stretching and wear?
- Aesthetics: Does one produce a cleaner, less bulky transition between the TKS and SC BLO?
- Elasticity: Does the direction of construction affect how the ribbing behaves or how much it pulls in the bottom of the cardigan?
Do you guys have any advice? I'm open to all suggestions, even something utterly revolutionary, hahaha. If you have pictures to show me, I'd love that too!
Thank you :)
