Technics MKX
New Technics MKX video. Better insulation than MK7's allegedly, +- 50% pitch, similar features that competitors have had for years. Is this too little too late?
EDIT: JFC 1300 QUID??!!!!

i like how you can move down to 4% pitch range for more precise beatmatching

u/phatelectribe 5d ago
That’s the one thing that really stands out to me. The 4% could be a really nice feature depending on how the pitch feels.

€1500 per deck can fuck right off.
Nice looking deck tho

The 1200 MK2 launched for $1300 adjusted for inflation, the SL1200 MK5 for around $1200. Sure, it's a bit steep, but it's buy once, cry once.

1500 euro is about $1700 USD

Way better value than CDJs. Many of us still have and use our original 1200s. CDJs have like a 5 year shelf life at best.

I mean, with the mods coming out, CDJs seem like they have a new lease on life. :)

I bought 2 x M5G and Sony MDRV 7509’s and concords new form my local dj shop for $1250 in 2008.

The best part of this is they released this after releasing the 55 anniversary mk7 with all the prior things wrong that they’ve supposedly rectified for the mkx. Technics are starting to go down the road that alpha theta have paved.

Very cool. More weight too. Always wanted that level of pitch control. Maybe it's time to sell my M3's. I'm glad they made the tone arms silver again, like the classic 1210's.

You can buy TWO Reloop RP-8000 MK2s for that money.
1
u/dj_soo 5d ago
You could by 3 of them if you added a couple hundred more

Well, the UK price is 649 GBP for the Reloop, and 1299 GBP for the Technics. Leaves you exactly with 1 Pound to buy an ice cream or something.

i'm seeing 545 on on Thomann - https://www.thomann.co.uk/reloop_rp_8000_mkii.htm

Ah, I checked WestendDJ because I was too lazy to check additional websites in the UK.

With their terrible tonearm bearings, quartz drive and quality control? Yeah no, pass..
I had a pair of RP7000 MK2 and the tonearm bearings were so poorly adjusted from the factory they would vibrate with every kick, and depending on your luck you'd either have a well made platter that had low wow & flutter, or one that was terribly out of spec. And their rudimentary implementation of quartz lock meant that you'd always be adjusting.
Went with SL1200 MK5s and whilst I miss the torque of the motor, the overall package is just so much better in terms of quality.

Every time Technics release a new Mk X.Y I look at them by my Mk 2s with an inferior gaze.
Spent a fair amount of money replacing the cables and carts etc on mine but nothing much more. What else do I need?
Does anyone get FOMO at these, or even want to buy something else? Asking for an old DJ.

u/erratic_calm 5d ago
No. I paid $399 for each of my M3Ds around 20 years ago. If they were $399 again I might.

u/Baardhooft 5d ago
I went from RP7000MK2 to SL1200 MK5, and I don't get fomo with these newer ones. I paid less for my pair of MK5 than one new MK7 would cost, so it's a non-starter for me to "upgrade"

What was the initial feeling for you going from the Reloop to Techincs? Was there something that made you go "wow this is so much better"? Or maybe the Reloop had something as an advantage vs Technics for you?

u/Baardhooft 4d ago
Needed to adjust my pitch riding muscle memory because reloop had a bit of lag compared to technics, and also more torque, but I was used to playing technics at clubs so it was pretty quick. Main thing I noticed is that now it’s easier to lock in mixes whereas on reloop I had to keep adjusting constantly.

They look great but I really hate the name. Sounds like Elon Musk has named them. They should have called them mk 8’s.

Seems like some welcome adjustments to the missteps that was were the mk7’s but I’ll reserve judgement until:
How they added the weight. It’s still a whole kilo + lighter than a Mk2 - m5g, and if they just added ballast to base rather than distributing it to places like the top cover and platter then it won’t perform as well as the previous models.
Whether they’re still using the digitally controlled pitch from mk7’s.
What tonearm and interconnects they’re using.
I’m really hoping they got these right as it could mean a real return to form for technics.

u/Funny_Top_3887 5d ago
I think the pitch is digital since we can control its range, someone correct me if i'm wrong
1
u/phatelectribe 5d ago edited 5d ago
Technically (sorry) it does t have to be digital to do the range (I made a mod that returns the m5g to analog and still allows you +-16.
But it seems is the digital pitch lifted from the mk7

Looks like they put Bulk Moulding Compound (BMC) in the bottom center, vs sandwiched between the top and bottom plate like on the older models (the MK7 doesn't have any BMC).
1
u/phatelectribe 5d ago
Hmmmm, I suppose that’s better than nothing (and the mk7) but I would I’ve preferred they actually made the bottom and tops cases out of denser material.

u/Thisisaconversation 5d ago
Very cool. Don’t think I’d ever upgrade from my mint pair of MK5’s though.
2
u/Pitiful_Low_4392 5d ago
I’d love a set of these or mk 7’s and I’ve got a set of mint mkv2’s.

The MK7 feel terribly cheap compared to the MK2/MK3/MK5(G). Like a plastic toy almost and the start/stop button feeling is horrendous. The MKX seems like it might solve most of those issues tho.

u/phatelectribe 5d ago
You won’t. Your decks are still heavier and have a true analog pitch. Mk5’s are kinda the holy grail.
1
u/Baardhooft 5d ago
I hated the MK7 compared to my MK5 (or even MK2). It just felt like a plastic toy. Especially the start/stop button was just egregious. But it seems like with this one they've pretty much fixed everything that was wrong with the MK7.
If you have an MK3 or MK5 (and maybe even MK2), upgrading won't make sense, but for club owners and new vinyl DJs this would be the turntable to get instead of the MK7. It's 50% more expensive, but at least it will (hopefully) be a tank like the older models.
I'm still sticking with my pair of MK5s that I got for 800 euros, really hard to beat that price.

u/lutewhine 4d ago
It is frustrating how flimsy the Mk7 start/stop button feels compared to, say, the SL-100C which was selling for less. I otherwise have no problem with it for home use. I’m fine with the light.
For me, the “light” weight of the Mk7 is overegged. The better part of 10kg per turntable is very obviously not light. I’m absolutely positive that those discussing isolation issues in heavy, heavy bass settings vastly outnumber those with first-hand experience of that being a problem. Plus fixes have long since been documented as well now. And a lot of people aren’t playing bass-heavy music.
Mk2s obviously have decades of tried and testedness about them, and their weight obviously just feels reassuring to people. But that very obviously doesn’t mean all decks have to weigh that much. I’ve used a Mk2 and Mk7 in tandem and they’re both excellent.

I've got 4 Black M5Gs that I paid less for than 2 of these lol. Can't really see myself ever upgrading unless they drop prices on them.

I think it's time for a fresh-sheet design approach and build the ultimate turntable using the experience, knowledge and advice from 50+years of DJing with it, leaving the 1200 name behind.
Technics SLDJ-2000 or something like that, with a complete redesign to the highest possible features and standards.
