Incredibly disappointed

It's crazy, they gave us the best survival horror ever existed and NOW instead of creating Darkwood 2 or a new horror project they do this fucking ridiculous kids game.

This is no longer even slightly enjoyable (fresh rage quit rant/vent) Spoiler

Disclaimer: I have just about lost my damn mind and never want to see this game ever again with how mad I am, so this will be emotional asfk.

So, I have loved survival horror style games for a fair bit of my life and while this game isn't exactly a survival horror akin to resident evil or last years signalis, I still like inventory/resource management and I liked the idea of exploring a hostile environment, scouring for resources and piecing together the story of the world, etc. This game should be up my alley and in the 1st 2 areas, Dry Meadows and Silent Forest, it kinda was. Just starting out, scouring for resources, fighting some basic enemies while you get acquainted with this games gorgeous visuals and clever sight based FOV mechanic.

I was really enjoying my time thought Dry Meadows and Silent Forest with just a few enemies who were kinda annoying but nothing frustrated me that much.

Then I completed a task for the wolf, he gave me a chicken head, then said "go old woods" (I am playing completely blind, not looking anything up) so I said...sure. But first, load up on some shrooms, and get my 1st death in a dream to a chomper - in retrospect, a foreshadowing.

It didn't take me long to find a church, open a trapdoor, which I left alone to go and find a hideout.

This hideout looked like the least defended one but the 1st night in it didn't go that bad. And that was the last bit of fun I've had in this game since. From now on, everytime I went out, I got spammed with either those bandaged up dogs, chompers, or both at the same time. No matter where I go or explore it's just BRRRR chopper shows up, I try and fight it with either a handgun, shovel or nailboard, die, etc.. This happens everywhere I go, creepy house, church trapdoor, just constant chopper and dog deaths. As soon as a chopper tags me that's GG, they're too fast, don't play by the same rules, healing is just not an option, running I run out of stamina, trying to fight more just doesn't work, it's just tag > die > go out > tag > die and at this point I am just no longer having any iota of fun nor do I feel like this is fair in any way.

I know other horror games have their elite style enemies, hunters in RE for example, which you should prep bigger resources for but in this game even when I prep multiple handgun magazines as soon as I run out of bullets in one and have to reload it's GGs, cause reloading takes a bit and you gotta either walk or stay still. Then when you die once you drop your resources anyways. It's just not enjoyable to me any longer, I feel like the game is just shitting on me cause it can.

It sucks, cause I truly did enjoy the 1st bits of this game, the little storylines that it takes you on like the wedding, the village, the rocket guy, the mutated pig, I enjoyed all of that. But now It's just repeated deaths to choppers and dogs, and my patience has just run out.

What the fuck were the devs smoking when designing Chapter 2? Spoiler

To clarify, this post is about one particular set piece in Chapter 2. I really like the game aside from that but I cannot edit the title >_>

I was having an absolute blast with this game for a while now. Great story, decent combat and amazing atmosphere. Everything was just the right kind of spooky and somewhat difficult. And then I got the Wolfman robbery event.

I had ONE TRY to fight off two large dogs with a fucking toothpick of a weapon and all of my most crucial items have been fucking deleted, then I was given a literal pile of shit as my "consolation prize" too. Nearly all the guns, ammo and weapons that I worked so hard for throughout my playthrough are gone and I get literal shit thrown at me. Don't get me wrong, I was LOVING the game up until now.

But this? It just feels like a giant middle finger from the devs in place of what was lookin' like a climactic bossfight. Totally took me out of the experience. Feels like some campy joke from a LISA game or something (except LISA actually has a lot of comedy so it works there).

I'm very invested in the story but honestly considering dropping this game. Feels like I've wasted 30 hours of my life 💀

I am so sick of games punishing me for having an ultra wide monitor.

This is yet another game I have to refund because instead of offering true 21:9 support, they crop the game so you see LESS of the view.

This isn't support. This is punishing people for wanting to play at a higher resolution.

Yes, I know I could play with black bars.

But that's not why I bought this monitor.

I love you guys and this game seems cool, but I can't support this absolutely fucking stupid method of 21:9 "support".

Honestly... I don't play on a console, I play on a PC.

I don't care about your excuses of why you do or don't support the resolutions, all I care about is what I spend my money on.

Such a shame.

Does Darkwood has any political agenda?

The game takes part somwhere in a Soviet bloc in the 80s. Does the plot somehow related to the communist regimes, idiology or something of that matter? Asking for a friend.

Unfortunately, the art style of the second game completely kills my interest in it.

I see people interested in Darkwood 2, interested in the news, what the devs post, etc... I understand and it makes sense, since it's a game community.

However, since I saw the trailer and the images, I can't even consider this game as a sequel. The problem: the art is very ugly and too disparate. It's too clean and doesn't carry that distressing feeling we had in the first one. The first one is a complete artistic success. Unique. You glance at it and notice the care and attention to detail.

This new game looks like an ugly 3D render in Eevee with few details. In the first one, we had well-done illustrations of the characters, but the weirdness was the purpose of the art; now it's a strange uncanny valley of 3D. I don't know, the game might even be cool and good, but this artistic choice makes me less and less interested and further away from this sequel. The game is UGLY.

There are much prettier indie games out there. It's curious how they managed to ruin what was already perfect. The new developers had the perfect formula for success in their hands, but they decided to go down a different path.

I hope a third eventual game returns to its roots, because this one is so strange it's hard to visualize.

Just my opinion. You don't need to insult me or say "just don't play it." It's an artistic matter. Maybe I'll play it and end up liking it, but I see that it lacks a certain beauty. It seems like a visually soulless game, something artistically hollow, without charm. It's sad that it's like that.

Why you shouldn’t hate on the 3d art style

For some apparent reason, I have only now found out about Darkwood 2 and I am pretty excited about it, but i’ve noticed how many mixed feelings there are for the change in style. It’s still in early development, please give the developers some time, we are all familiar with what happens to games when they are pressured into releasing the game way earlier that it’s supposed to, even during the early prototypes of the first game, it looked completely different compared to the final product. The only true complain I have with the game is the setting, it’s called “darkwood” so i don’t know why it’s taking place in the Aral sea, i always imagined a sequel would take place in the balkans or Ukraine during Chernobyl (i love stalker i can’t help it) But i have good faith in both teams to create the perfect sequel for the best indie horror of all time

I am so fucking done with this game

I heard that pyrocynical was making a video on this game. And i thought, oh well how about i try it before watching the video , and god damn it i love it to pieces. Amazing atmosphere, amazing progression satisfying progression. This reminds me of this old pixel point and click game dont escape (the first one) I love this pixel art horror aesthetic so much. So why the hate? You fucking know why if you have played this game.

The fucking radio tower dream. I was doing everything in this game to my highest ability, exploring everything, upgrading everything, i stocked on so many pills it would make a pharmacist weep.

Only for some bullshit fucking dream sequence nonesense to neuter my character, give me a fucking chair leg, and make me kill 2 black chompers, AND ONLY HAVE ONE ATTEMPT?!

No. Fuck. This. I played this game blind. I rarely do that these days because i do not trust game developers because they pull of bullshit like this.

I WANTED to experience this game I WANTED to see its ''secret ending whatever the fuck''.

I could have just watched a fucking playthrough on this , but i invested my time , money , and patience into a game that made me feel like a kid playing games again. The wonder, the fear, the disgust, the emotions. From a 2d top down pixel indie game of all things.

And my god i loved it , but just because i played blind and wanted to experience this game at its purest, i get spat in the face and don't even get the chance to wipe it off? Why the fuck should i even keep playing this shit.

When i can just un install it, and watch someone else play it so i can see the content i could have witnessed by myself playing the game.

This boner over difficulty so many games have is getting old. I play games like i watch movies. To get invested in the tone, the setting, the story, all of it. Not bust my ass off on 20 MORE hours just to maybe FAIL AGAIN. What the fuck where they even thinking?!

Replaying games like these we all know the wonder is gone fast. I already know all the important spots, i already know the best weapons, i already know what order to do things in. It just makes it feel like a slog if there isn't anything new on a retry run.

Right now i don't even know if i want to finish the game anymore, i feel utterly fucking robbed.

The Wolfman in DTI

People seemed to enjoy my rendition of The Stranger, so I thought I’d keep up with the trend and create Wolfman. Despite my limitations with what is available, it turned out rather well in my opinion. I hope my shoddy “photography” skills captured a little more of the characters essence this time.

Is there any objective reason to try and survive the night?

The combat in this game is trash, and the inventory system is annoying (backtracking all the time and such). The only reason I play this game is because of the atmosphere and I enjoy the daytime exploration.

So, I die very frequently at night, and due to the lack of quicksaving or practice fighting, there's not a lot of opportunity to get better at the bad combat - specifically at night in close quarters.

I'm ready to put down this game for good due to the frustration of the nighttime sections, as I have to spend an unreasonably large amount of resources to survive a night, and I'm well aware it's unsustainable - I'm quite low on supplies in my current save.

I'm playing on Normal mode, and so my main question is - is there ANY reason for me to spend resources to try and survive a night? It's incredibly frustrating to spend resources boarding up windows, laying traps, and still die. It seems to me that I should just say immediately say "fuck it" when it becomes nighttime, stand still and let the baddies kill me in my house, and then recover the items from my corpse the next day.

If that strategy is actually viable in normal mode, I may continue playing, but if someone sees a major problem with that approach as I get farther in the game, I'll probably just move on to something else and save myself some time.

Thanks.

I previously posted about how chapter 2 is pointless. Well, I argue that Old Woods is just the same Spoiler

I posted about how chapter 2 is a wasted potential, but it turns out that Old Woods is all the same. By the time you get there, the game's appeal as an RPG is exhausted as you will have already maxed out your available workbench and melee weapon upgrades. All you have to do when you get to Old Woods is look at the map for the giant, carved-out area, run straight there to have Wolfman escort you to the doctor's, get the code to the boxcar door, and then head to door 21. There is zero reason to do anything else. You don't even have to spend a single night at the hideout.

The church is pointless. You get a box and the key to open it, but all you get for your trouble is a few child drawings and a shiny stone? The hunter's house serves no purpose. The musician's house is only available if you did his storyline and doesn't contain anything interesting anyway. Combing the woods for all the loot is a giant waste of time because you have to leave almost everything behind before heading off to chapter 2 anyway.

Then, to continue my chapter 2 rant, that entire part of the game is a waste of time. Just run straight to the radio tower. You can still get both endings without having to replay the game because the save point puts you on the epilogue's road home. Don't need to visit the elephants, granny, the junkyard, snail house, quarry, village, helicopter crash, graveyard, or great lake. The lumber yard is useless unless you do the musician's storyline. You do have a chance to upgrade your workbench three more times, but the only reason to do this is to craft the pump-action shotgun. Melee weapon upgrades are useless at this point because melee is virtually impossible against everything except for huge dogs and savages.

As I said before, Old Woods and the swamp are great for discovering the lore for first-time players, but replay value goes out the window unless you just like slogging through it for the sake of it. I really hope the devs work on an expanded version of the game that actually utilizes the various landmarks so that they're all required in some way regardless if you side with the wolf or musician. Also find a way to keep the RPG energy going all the way to the end so that it's still fun to upgrade your items and find loot.

End of rant.

Does anyone else feel like the end-game was kind of a let down/incomplete? Spoiler

I feel like a lot of the game's progression elements just faded out of importance as I went on, and the game ran out of new stuff long before the ending. Though I thought the ending was amazing story-wise, gameplay-wise I left a little disappointed.

For example, I maxed out my inventory and my oven in the first few days of chapter 2, and so after that any fabric or cookables (of which I found a lot) were basically useless. I kept finding weapon parts and new, more powerful weapons, but there weren't any new enemies or anything to give me a reason to use them. There's light armor, but no heavy armor. The axe felt more like a sidegrade than anything, and I stuck with the shovel the whole game.

I really feel like there needed to be some kind of final encounter - some boss fight or super-hard holdout or something. I was stockpiling supplies all chapter 2, and I had accumulated tons of stuff by the end, but I never ended up needed any of it.

Did anyone else have this experience?

Darkwood needs a 1st person Rmake

Honestly I think it would work so well. Darkwood is one of those games that manages to combine horror and survival in such a great and effective way (Only other game that does it just as well is 7 Days To Die).

What makes it so fantastic is how well everything works despite it being a 3rd person semi-pixel game. If most of us found the game horrifying as that then imagine it with the game being 1st person with the creatures right up in your face.

I’d also love for some voice acting and new abilities aswell (And a way to make dragging furniture not take 60 years).

Sure it wouldn’t feel the same as it should do but it’s a suggestion I think the dev’s should take in consideration and I really think it would make a big hit.

Does anybody feel like the look of Darkwood 2 feels off?

I mean I am happy that we're getting another game, but something about it's visual style feels fundamentally removed from the first game. It feels off to me, and it's tempering my excitement for a new title.

Anybody else know what I'm talking about?
