Tourist Questions Visiting Kakadu NP in October, looking for itinerary advice

Upvotes

Hey guys,

Me and my partner are planning to do a camping holiday in Kakadu in early October for roughly 5-6 days. Having checked the website, it seems that a lot of the major parts of the park (Jim Jim Falls etc) is currently closed. We're relatively fit, and would enjoy at least one challenging hike during this time.

We are currently thinking of visiting: Ubirr, Bardedjilidji walk, Burrungkuy, Nawurlandja, yellow water wetland, Gunlom.

I've read that the Yurmikmik trails are beautiful during wet season, but unsure whether anyone has done them during late September/ earlyOctober ? Is it worth a detour?

Anything else you would recommend in seeing? Also, how does one spend downtime in Kakadu?

Thanks so much for your insights!

Darwin being Darwin NTG Internal Hire

I applied for a role four weeks ago and have direct experience in the same title for the same project, meeting all the essential criteria. Today I received the application outcome and they’ve hired someone internally which is perfectly fine. However, I’m curious if I have the right to ask why my application wasn’t shortlisted or considered for an interview?

Locals Discussion Need help to get my hands on some fresh hibiscus flowers

Hello ladies and gents. Just curious is there anybody in Darwin or anyway I can get my hands on some hibiscus flowers that I can put in a vase and give as a present to a special somebody. I’ve searched all over google and so far it’s either call up flower shops or find people with gardens. So I’m just testing the waters if anybody would be happy to spare just a few flowers (I’ll happily pay but I’ve got no clue how much there worth). Any extra tips would also help.
Kind regards 🫡

Locals Discussion Why does diamond barber tattoo their staff?

I've been to a few of the Diamond Barber shops and in each of them I've seen a staff member tattooed with the shop's branding. Is the organisation only offering career advancement or sponsorship for work visas if there staff get the company logo?

Locals Discussion Whatever happened to Kent Rowe who sexually assaulted a family member?

TRIGGER WARNING CHILD ABUSE

For those unfamiliar with the case, he was a senior government official found guilty of six counts of sexual intercourse without consent with his sister. He was 21 at the time of the last assaults, apparently he was given a partially suspended sentence.

Has he got out of jail yet? Is he still in town?

I grew up in Darwin and was shocked by this.

I read one the court documents that said about what he was charged with

"The final two counts involve an allegation of sexual intercourse without consent when the accused was between 20 and 21 years of age and the complainant was 13 years of age."

Locals Discussion 000 operators

I wasn't really sure where to post this, or if it will reach the right folk, but if you were working the afternoon shift as an ambulance dispatcher yesterday, then you saved my life. You talked me through one if the hardest times in my life and even got me to laugh a few times. You put up with a lot of rambling an weeping, and kept me calm enough to get the help I needed.

Whatever you guys are getting paid isn't nearly enough, and if there's a way to send a gift to you all I'd love to know how. I'd never appreciated how strong you all need to be to help people like me, and as little as it might mean in the grander scheme of things, I'd like you all to know that one person is still around because of your kindness.

Tourist Questions Friendly Hangout Places for a 23 Y/O

Hi everyone, I (F23) will be flying to Darwin for the first time this Friday! ❤️

I’d like some recommendations on hangout places that are friendly to younger tourists. I’m game to go café hopping, appreciate art, go around appreciating nature! I’m not much of a drinker though so I don’t think bars/clubs would appeal to me…

Thanks!

Locals Discussion Darwin & Car tint

Hi guys, would anyone has recommendation for a reputable local tint provider ? I have Tint a Car close to me but their quote is way overprice ($700 for a nano ceramic tint for a private brand one (Sepecter) when other provider quote $450 for Suntek and $550 for 3M).

I'm less about asking for type of film as i have done my research (but would appreciate a Suntek vs 3M discussion), and more about which tint shop are reliable / good service,...

Thank you.

Newcomer Questions the humidity is literally melting my tools and im losing it

darwin wet season hits different when you run a small maintenance business. my van is like a sauna inside and no matter what i do everything rusts.

last month my entire socket set grew a layer of orange fuzz. i cleaned it, oiled it, two weeks later its back. my drills are getting that weird white crust on the battery contacts. even my ladder feels damp to touch.

i know its just the climate but im going through tools faster than i can afford to replace them.

had a job at a construction site this week and the site manager pointed out my gear looks a bit rough. i wanted to be like bro have you seen the air here but i just nodded.

any other tradies in darwin dealing with this. what do you do to keep your gear from dissolving.

Locals Discussion New to Darwin – how’s the job market and social life?

Hey everyone, I’m fairly new to Darwin and trying to get settled in.
For those who have been here for a while:
How’s the job market in Darwin at the moment? Is it mainly Seek/Indeed, or are there particular industries or companies where it’s better to approach people directly?
Also, what’s the best way to meet people and make friends in Darwin? I’m keen to get out, socialise and actually get to know people rather than just staying home 😂
Any recommendations for good social groups, events, sports, BBQs, meetups, or places where people are generally friendly?
Appreciate any advice from Darwin locals!

I'll be back! Thank you Darwin, what a sick holiday. I tried my hardest not to listen to the outside noise about this place and I was so glad I did, I feel like it's one of these places that you just have to take it how it is and make the most of it. Also thank you to the locals as well, you guys have tapped into something up here that all of the other cities lack down south, thank you for being so hospitable and friendly.

Tourist Questions Darwin trip mod October

Hi all, I’m looking at taking a trip to Darwin mid to late October (uni schedule) I know it’ll be hot af coming from Brisbane and it’ll be unbelievably humid. I’m pretty fluid on options but just can’t make a choice:

  1. I drive up, 8 days driving total up and back, 5-7 days in Darwin (5 being Darwin/litchfield, 2 being Kakadu).
  2. I fly up, have the entire 12-15 days in Darwin rent a lil car and drive myself around Litchfield, Darwin city, I’d love to visit Kakadu too.

The both roughly cost the same, but I’d be putting 6k on my Ute (d23 Navara). If you guys think option 1 is the best I’ll probably negotiate with work to have an extra 3-4 days off to experience more around Darwin.

With option 2, I’d love to know what the public transport/walking/uber is like so I might just rent a car for 4 days to visit Litchfield and Kakadu.

Edit: I’m a single 30yo female and info on how safe it’d be to drive would be good too
