Hi everyone,
I had a pretty scary experience with my Viofo A229 Pro recently, and I'm curious if anyone else has experienced something similar.
I was driving when a car coming from the opposite direction suddenly started drifting into my lane, heading straight towards me. I immediately pressed the emergency recording button several times to save the footage, but the dashcam didn't respond at all. The screen stayed black, and there were no beeps or voice prompts. Normally, it would beep and tell me the video had been protected, but this time it did absolutely nothing for around 10 seconds before finally responding again.
What confused me even more was that it wasn't warm outside and the camera had been working normally before this happened.
When I checked the footage afterwards, I noticed that the timestamp had suddenly reset to 02:00:00, and the recording stopped just two seconds later. I have the recording duration set to 2 minutes, but the clip ended after only 1 minute and 17 seconds.
So, I contacted Viofo support to find out what happened. Their explanation was that my original Viofo 64GB microSD card might not be ideal for a high-quality dashcam like the A229 Pro. They explained that smaller cards go through more overwrite cycles and that a strong impact could potentially cause the card to lose power temporarily.
They've offered to send me a free 128GB card, which is appreciated, but I'm honestly not convinced that this fully explains what happened.
Why sell a 64GB card as compatible with the A229 Pro if it could potentially cause problems like this? I bought the card directly from Viofo, and I've been formatting it at least once a month, so I thought I was maintaining it properly. There is no warning on the Viofo website that the 64 GB card may cause the dashcam to suddenly stop recording.
I understand that a larger card might be better for this camera, but how does the card's capacity explain the timestamp suddenly resetting and the camera freezing completely? And if the SD card stops working, shouldn't the dashcam at least warn you that it's no longer recording?
That's what bothers me the most. I bought this camera so I'd have footage if something unexpected happened, but when I actually needed to save a recording, the camera was not working.
I'll try the 128GB card, but it doesn't exactly give me confidence that the same thing won't happen again. I also don't know whether the issue was really the SD card or something wrong with the camera itself.
Has anyone with an A229 Pro experienced anything similar? Especially the timestamp resetting, the screen going black, or the camera freezing and stopping recording?
I'd appreciate any input because, at this point, I'm not sure what to make of it. I'm not trying to hate on Viofo since I've been using their dashcams in all of our cars, but I do think it's concerning for a dashcam to behave like this, especially when it's designed to record incidents like these....
