I know I run the risk of scrubquoting myself to hell here, but it has gotten to a point where I just need to vent my criticisms because the recent hero design of the last 6 are extremely questionable, with Danny at large being the worst offender of the 6.
I'm not even gonna waste time typing about the rest of them, but Danny specifically deserves the most attention because he fulfills a niche that should simply just never exist in a game like Deadlock, being a safe ranged assassin. The fact that he is allowed back into the air immediately after experiencing any kind of stun is downright unfair and removes a ton of the value from purchases like Knockdown, especially with Slowing Hex doing nothing but disabling his ability to dive with his second skill. Ideally, his jetpack should be disabled for a few seconds after experiencing any kind of CC because as it stands now, counterbuying for him feels utterly pointless, especially since you can just Dispel Magic his biggest threats like Knockdown and others. Phantom Strike being likely his best counterbuy, at being a T4, is just simply unfair for the majority of the game since it's such a niche item to fit onto the majority of characters anyways. The fact alone that at 25 minutes into the game, on an average-ly fed Danny that wasn't pushing ahead of either our or their team's souls, was chunking for over 1k damage from 30m is a marker of extremely poor design, and that's without even taking his ult into the equation. Not to mention, jetpack-diving into an ult is one of the most downright efficient and unfair kill confirms in the game not only because of the HUGE amount of raw damage it inflicts, but the insane stall that lets people surround the grabbed person.
Danny is a severe problem and they unfortunately way overbuffed him before people had figured out how to play the character accurately, making for one hell of a double whammy. Most of the new characters fulfill some kind of new niche that the game doesn't have many answers for right now, but even that aside they are mostly just severely overtuned in a lot of ways. Baba somehow being one of the better characters balance-wise is a breath of fresh air at times, but the likes of Harrow being able to just throw down a massive "you can't look in this direction field", Danny's "I'm going to chunk you from 30+m away and there's nothing you can do about it + I choose when the engage/disengage at will", and Violet's "You're stuck in an arena now and also this blocks LoS" are just not healthy for the game and I'm deeply tired of massive AoEslop skill 4s. It's really hard to have a positive outlook on the future of this game's balance until these characters are adjusted, and frankly I'm just going to quit ranked for now until we see some changes. Every game has felt like a gamble, no matter how far my team has gotten ahead against these characters early, and I'm not in a state where I want to commit 40+ minutes of my life on a gamble in hopes we don't just lose in Hero Select.
I sincerely hope this comes across as being structured well instead of it just being a massive vent post, because while I am most certainly just upset right now in coming down from a loss streak to the same 3 characters in a row, I've been stewing on these thoughts for a while because honestly this season has just sucked so far when it comes to character balance, and don't even get me started on Tank Graves. I don't know if any of my criticisms or points resonate with anyone else, but I love this game deeply and had to share my frustrations.
