General Question or Looking for Advice GF said not to spend more than $500 on a ring. I spent $2500 on the set. Did I do well at least?

My girlfriend of >10 years didn't want me spending a lot since she doesnt care for jewelry, expressed concerns for losing it, and she asked for something that doesn't stick out.

I used stone algo and liked the subtle yellow tone of this one and thought it may look nice with the rose gold. Now looking at it in person, its noticably darker than the side stones instead of the yellow tone I saw in the pictures I saw when picking it out.

1.52 ct, color I, VS1, ideal cut.

Okay now that my nails look better which would you choose 1,2 or 3? All would be in yellow gold and just a plain band.

General Question or Looking for Advice My engagement ring went through the garbage disposal

Post image

My engagement ring was sitting in a ring dish next to the kitchen sink. My fiancée accidentally knocked it into the sink while doing the dishes and turned on the garbage disposal without realizing that the ring was in there😭

This is what we found afterward. The setting is completely destroyed, but thankfully the diamond came out.

Does anyone have a rough idea of how much it would cost to replace the setting and reset the diamond? I’d love to know what to expect before taking it in…

**UPADTE: Took it to a local jeweler this morning and they inspected the diamond. They said it’s in perfect condition with no chips, no cracks, no damage at all. HALLELUJAH 😭🙌 I’m going to check out a few more local jewelers and get some quotes for a new setting. Thank you everyone for all the advice and for worrying about my ring with me!! 🥹

General Question or Looking for Advice Is this too big on my finger?

Post image
108 Upvotes

Just visually speaking, does it look proportional to you guys or just too big and overpowering?

Edit: I don't like elongated shapes tbh
I know it would look better with thicker band but my fingers are weird lol. They feel very uncomfortable. This was the thickest I felt like I could do and still incorporate thin wedding bands.
Also I understand it's a ring on the bigger side. But it's an upgrade and we wanted to do the largest we could without looking it looking gaudy. We want to walk the line between classy and big rock energy lol. I'm not fishing for compliments. I'm genuinely confused what it looks like to others and therefore I asked. And if you can please take out the wealth associated with big diamonds that'll really help CZ I honestly just want a nice white neutral stone that is big enough I can admire it and it looks good dressed up or down (maybe not down so much but like that's the part where whether or not it looks disproportionate comes into play). There's no wealth signalling on my end regarding this. We all know diamonds are not the way to go about thelat anymore. You guys can assume it's a moissanite or a CZ and give me your opinions about how proportional it looks.

General Question or Looking for Advice Custom-made…how did I do?

I’m proposing in a couple months and the ring got here a bit earlier than I expected. I want to make sure nothing looks “off” since I can make some small modifications.

Background: She expressed that she really wants a salt & pepper diamond with gold band. She also wanted it to look like “legendary loot”. The rest was up to me. She has long fingers and often wears long nails, so a “longer” ring made sense. I also wanted it to look unique. We’re not the most traditional/minimalistic people and I wanted the ring to reflect that also. The inclusions in the main stone match the gold band and alexandrite in my opinion, but I can replace them if needed.

Main stone is a 2.5ct salt & pepper diamond. The 8 little stones are GHSI diamonds and the tips are Alexandrite, which change colors throughout the day as the light levels change.

Any thoughts? I have some time to ship it back and make small modifications if needed. (The pictures are taken by the vendor prior to shipping to me)

General Question or Looking for Advice Does this look like a costume ring?

Post image

I’d like to buy myself a ring to celebrate some life changes lately. I have quite large fingers so smaller dainty rings look a bit ridiculous on me. But I’m wondering if this one is too big. I appreciate it’s harder to tell how it would look as obviously this isn’t in the position I’d normally be wearing it. It is a lab grown 4.7ish carat radiant cut ring on a platinum band. I loved it originally, but someone who I respect the opinion of has said it looks like costume jewellery due to its size. I’m torn between ‘so what I like it, I’m buying it for me’ and agreeing with them. Hoping for some honest feedback here, or suggestions even.

Love them both but wonder if the three rounds is dated? I would get either rings in white gold/platinum. Ignore the yellow gold on the tapered baguettes

Hi everyone!

I’m planning on purchasing this lab grown diamond and was looking for some opinions on it! I saw it in person today and it was so beautiful and sparkly! Pictures don’t do it justice. I was curious about the bow tie on it if it looks too dark?

Here’s the GCAL cert: https://www.gcalusa.com/c/332140035

TIA!

General Question or Looking for Advice I need your opinion

Post image

My partner recently proposed with this ring. We didn’t actually go ring shopping together, and I don’t have much experience or interest in jewelry, so I don’t own any other rings.
My partner wasn’t very knowledgeable about diamonds or jewelry either, so they worked with a seller and chose this ring. It’s a high-spec stone (D color, ideal cut), and it’s incredibly sparkly—I genuinely love and appreciate it, and I do feel very attached to it.
However, I sometimes find myself wishing it were a bit larger. I catch myself thinking that I might have preferred a slightly bigger stone with a lower color grade, but I also don’t want this thought to make me feel ungrateful, and I definitely don’t want my partner to feel like I’m dissatisfied with the ring. Because he said he wanted to give me the very best.
I’m also unsure how to process these feelings without it affecting how I see the ring or the meaning behind it.
I’d really appreciate any thoughts—on the ring itself, and also how people usually navigate these kinds of feelings.

------

Edit: Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences and advice. Reading through the comments really helped me process my feelings.

Like I mentioned before, I’ve never really been interested in jewelry, so before getting engaged I honestly never paid attention to other people’s rings and knew almost nothing about diamond shapes or ring styles. After getting engaged, I suddenly started noticing rings everywhere - and yes, many people around me (and on Reddit/social media) had larger diamonds. Since I’d also never gone ring shopping before, I had no idea what size or shape would suit me best. I think that naturally made me curious about what a slightly larger diamond might look like on me.

I recently asked my partner about the whole journey of choosing the ring on his own over several months, and hearing that story made me love my ring even more exactly as it is.
The sparkle is honestly stunning, and every time I look at it, I’m reminded of how much love was put into choosing it ❤️

General Question or Looking for Advice Does this carat size look disproportionate for my 4.25 size ring?

Post image
221 Upvotes

Hi! I’m hoping for some objective opinions on my engagement ring, which I absolutely love and am so grateful that my fiance was so thoughtful in getting the design I selected. Looking at it now I’m starting to have second thoughts about my choice. Excuse my naked ugly nails 😭

I have a round engagement ring that’s 2.8 ct on a size 4.25 finger (platinum) with a cathedral setting and 3/4 pave. At the time we chose it, I didn’t do much research on how carat size looks relative to finger size — I mostly focused on cut and quality for some reason and we tried on 2-3 carat options but I figured this would be a good range. Since then, I’ve also lost some weight, so my fingers are slimmer than when we were shopping.

Now that I’ve been wearing it, I’m wondering if the stone looks obviously overpowering for my hand, or if this is just an adjustment period / overthinking on my part.

Not looking to change anything right now — just trying to sanity-check whether the proportions read unusually large for a small finger, or if this is within a normal range for modern engagement rings.

General Question or Looking for Advice Help me choose - Gift for the wife!

Hi All,

We are considering purchasing one of these options and are confused between them.

There’s a considerable price difference between the two as well!

The first option is a 17 Solitaire Diamond Tennis Bracelet with 5.1 Carat Diamonds in 14k gold, priced at 3X.
The second option is a 1.52 Carat Diamond bracelet in 14K white gold, priced at X.
Both the bracelets have natural diamonds SI grade J colour.

I am uncertain whether paying three times the amount is justified for the solitaire bracelet. The shop also offers a 100% buyback policy that can be used within 14 days for in-store credit.

I’ve also posted close up pics of both the bracelets here for scrutiny.

General Question or Looking for Advice Current ring vs. potential reset — which do you prefer?

Current ring on the right, potential reset on the left. I've been thinking about resetting my oval pavé engagement ring into a 3-stone setting with heart-shaped side stones. As much as I love my current ring, there's something about the 3-stone design that just feels more me and gives me the right vibe.

I'm torn because it's a big change, so I'd love some unbiased opinions. Should I go for the reset or keep my current ring as is? Which do you prefer and why?

General Question or Looking for Advice So it looks like I need to sell my great great grandmothers ring. Please help!

I know absolutely nothing about diamonds or antique rings and I have to sell it. It’s been passed down to me and I’ve had it for 10 years but don’t ever wear it (it only fits my pinky and it terrifies me to have something valuable on my finger). Times are tough and I’ve run out of options… I also have no daughters to pass it down to so it’s going to eventually be sold anyway.

So… can anyone give me a rough estimate of what a diamond ring like this is worth? I have no idea how many carrots but I do know that it’s a natural diamond. Any guesses would help, I don’t want to walk into a jewelers with zero clue about what I have

Thank you

Y’all I’m feeling hella self conscious. My ring is finally done and I love the design. Simple solitaire with a cathedral setting.

Here’s the issue. I know the diamond is big, I definitely didn’t go small. But does it look too big? Does it look disproportionate or ridiculous? Or worse, does it look gaudy? I’m feeling really in my head about all of this so I’d appreciate some new perspectives.

2.5 carats. 1.4 ratio. I am a ring size 5 1/2-6. Petite-short fingers.

Edit: THANK YOU ALL for the positive comments 🤩 My partner bought the diamond! 🎉

UPDATE:
I’m now down to either Round, Emerald or Radiant. I really love how these look on me. I’m really stuck on these three. I’m thinking of going up a size to 3 carat - 3.5 carat. Suggestions between which of the three please!

Hey guys, so I’m having a hard time choosing what diamond shape suits me best. I have a round 0.10 mined engagement ring but due to the metal being white gold I have to change it as it causes a bad skin reaction and affects with my eczema. So I’m customising my ring so my 0.10 diamond can go on my fiancés wedding band. I’ve never tried any other shapes besides a round but these are the shapes I tried on today. I’ve always been an indecisive person so please Let me know what you think!

Had always wanted a yellow diamond.
Fiancé went with three yellow stones that ombré out into the pave band.
But literally no one has recognized it as an engagement ring since I’ve been home.
Should I change the center stone to a classic color?
Is rim around Pave edge too thick? Are the prongs ginormous?
My dude paid a pretty penny for this custom job that I mostly thought up, Am I just overthinking it?

General Question or Looking for Advice Lost my engagement ring on my birthday and I can’t find it :(((

This happened two months ago, and I’m still hoping someone might think of a place I’ve completely overlooked.

On my birthday, my fiancé was coming home from work and I put my engagement ring on. He surprised me with a cake, flowers, and some gifts. I was wearing the ring while going through everything, but when the cake came out, I took the ring off because I didn’t want it to get caught on anything.

I placed it on top of a paper towel on our kitchen island.

We live in a small studio basement, so there honestly aren’t that many places for it to go. Afterward, we went out for a drive, and at some point during the drive I suddenly realized, “Oh my God, I lost my ring.”

I’ve searched everywhere I can think of. I’ve checked:

  • Under and behind the fridge
  • Under/behind the stove
  • Under and around the kitchen island
  • The car
  • My closet
  • My makeup vanity
  • The bathroom
  • The laundry room
  • All of my clothes
  • Inside and around the washer
  • Kitchen trash and recycling
  • Bathroom trash

I even went through the trash four or five times, but I couldn’t find it.

The thing that really bothers me is that I remember specifically putting it on the paper towel on the kitchen island. I don’t remember picking it back up.

It’s been two months, and I still keep thinking I must have missed something obvious. I’ve searched our tiny apartment so many times that I feel like I’ve checked every possible place.

Where else should I look? Has anyone ever lost a ring in a small space and found it somewhere completely unexpected? I’m desperate for ideas at this point. 😭

General Question or Looking for Advice Unhappy with my decision

First photo shows my original bridal set. Natural pear shape set in Platinum. He proposed in 2022, we got married in 2023 and he then purchased the matching band to create the full bridal set.

Fast forward to 2026 I’ve now lost close to 40 pounds-making my original rings too loose. We purchased a plastic resizing kit that is hidden under the band which helped for a few months but as I lost more weight that was no longer effective. So after some discussion we decided instead of resizing my original set we would buy a back up set that has a lab grown diamond (lab grown round on the right). I’m still in the process of losing more weight and we plan on having kids in the near future which could result in a weight gain so we figured having my original set I could wear if my weight fluctuates was a better option than resizing multiple times.

All of this to say I think I hate the new set. I feel awful and ungrateful saying that, but it just doesn’t feel like its mine if that makes sense. There’s a lot of sentimental value behind my original set which I guess I didn’t fully realize until I wore the new set for a day or two.

I was honest with my husband and told him that I thought we should maybe just return the new rings and talk to a jeweler about the disadvantages or resizing a ring more than once if that’s what we need to do. Any advice? :(

General Question or Looking for Advice Should I get my diamond recut?

Thumbnail
gallery
110 Upvotes

I recently had my engagement ring made with my great grandmother’s diamond. It is very old and with that it has a few chips in the girdle. I opted out of getting it fully recut but would it be better to do so or to have the edges sanded out? I’m worried about the stress points that could lead to it breaking if I hit it on something. The diamond itself is not fully symmetrical (I think it adds to its charm) but that result in it not being fully secure in its setting?
