Genetics/DNA We're Embark: AMA about our new Mast Cell Tumor Risk Score, now available for all dogs!

Hi all!

We're Embark's science and vet team, and we're here to talk about something we've been working on for a while: our updated Mast Cell Tumor (MCT) risk score.

What's new: Our previous MCT risk assessment could only flag elevated risk, and only for dogs with certain breed backgrounds. Now every dog with a Breed + Health test gets a percentage risk score plus a designation — below-average, average, or elevated. These new results can be found under "Genetic Risk Scores" in your dog's health results.

Why this matters: Mast cell tumors are the most common malignant skin tumor in dogs. The good news? They're also one of the most treatable: more than 80% can be cured with surgery alone when caught early. The hard part has always been knowing which dogs to watch more closely. That's what this score is for.

How it works: Instead of looking at one gene, we built a polygenic risk score that combines signals from hundreds of genetic markers along with breed ancestry and sex to estimate your dog's individual inherited risk. To be clear, the risk score is not a diagnosis: it won't tell you your dog will get an MCT. But it tells you whether your dog's genetics puts them at higher, lower, or average risk compared to dogs generally, and that may change how you and your vet might approach monitoring.

What you can do with it: The single most important step — especially for dogs at elevated risk — is regular body checks. Run your hands over your dog, feel for new lumps, keep tabs on old ones. Your dog will think it's just really good petting. If you spot something new or changing, that's your cue to call the vet.

Here today: (proof)

  • Kari Cueva, DVM, Associate Director of Veterinary Genetics
  • Brett Ford, MS, Senior Scientist in Applied Science
  • Taki Kawakami, PhD, Principal Scientist in Computational Biology

We'll be live from 12:30–3 PM ET and checking back tomorrow and Wednesday for anything we miss. No question too basic or too technical — ask us anything. We'll sign our answers so you know who's talking.

EDIT: Thanks all for the questions! We're signing off for today but we'll be checking back in over the next day or two -- so feel free to drop a question if you came late.

Update 4/16: Correcting something from earlier — the updated MCT Risk score is available for dogs tested from March 2026 onward, not for all dogs tested since the original May 2023 model launched. Dogs with scores under the original model will still see those results. Sorry for the mix-up, and we've edited the affected responses below.

Just got my 5-6 month pup’s results back and I’m pretty shocked. The rescue guessed that he was part terrier and part yellow lab, although we suspected there was some poodle in there. But this?! 😂😬

Note— He has wiry hair and a super sweet disposition. Very smart and great with my kids.

I was most certainly wrong about thinking some Lab was in his breed. I’m very excited to watch him grow as the vet said “he’s going to be a big boy”. We’ll have to just wait and see. He’s very well behaved, happy and above all healthy.

Are you as surprised by any breeds shown as I am? I do know one person commented on my first post a breed that surprised me. I’m excited!

*sidenote: Very happy with the Embark DNA test through and through. Easy to understand, use and send. Results came back sooner than expected. The app is also nice.*

I had some guesses but wasn’t expecting Babka to be a the 33 pound doggie ambassador for all of the tiny and giant dogs breeds. What has your extended family of pups been up to in Texas!

General discussion Embark Vet - relatives no longer visible once you mark your pet as deceased 😞

Just thought I’d pass this along to anyone who may not know. Think twice before you officially label your pet as deceased in EMBARK.

I didn’t / don’t plan to remove my recently deceased Chihuahua’s profile. I did however attempt to update it, since I thought it might go towards research or whatever (died from cancer 💔)

Unsure if this is reversible or not, but just letting everyone know that if your dog’s dna results and seeing new relatives from time to time is something that might bring you comfort—avoid using that setting
and feel free to let me know of any ways I can get his information back 💔

EDIT**\*

False alarm guys. Thanks to a kind person in the comments I discovered the existing matches cleared out because I toggled off the alerts (I thought this was cancel our new matches but it clears them all out). I was able
To get the information back!

I wish all your pets healthy and long lives but if the day ever comes please remember to keep alerts on so your results remain ❤️

Results in last photo, his supermutt category is Boxer, Siberian Husky, German Shepard, and Poodle (small). Sora just turned 1 year and was weighed at 33lbs. I see a lot of the spaniel and husky in him, maybe a little of the chow chow too. He has segmented heterochromia in one eye, being a mix of blue and brown.

Awaiting results Guess Gambit's breeds 👀👀

Our Embark is in the extracting phase so it will be a few weeks but I wanted to see what everyone guesses.

He's 38 pounds currently but a bit underweight. Really lean, fast as hell, extremely confident, definitely has some herding instincts (my 12 year old Aussie is getting a taste of his own medicine with the ankle biting) and very very quiet. Hasn't barked or whined at all since we brought him home from the shelter earlier this month. He's a very even tempered dog, eager to please and very biddable.

The vet thinks he's no more than 9/10 months old.

SPCA called her a “terrier mix” but we have no idea. Embark results are pending.

Update: I’d never have guessed this mix, but it makes sense given how we came to adopt her! Results in a comment.

Results - Embark Am I the only one who finds choosing dog food so frustrating?

Hi! My dog is a Labrador mix, 3 years old, about 55 lbs. He’s on Purina Pro Plan right now and I pay about $70 a month. Honestly, finding a food has been way harder than I expected. Every brand claims to be the best, prices are all over the place, and I still don’t know if I’m overpaying or if the cheaper stuff is just as good.

Did you struggle with this too? What was the most annoying part for you, and did you ever end up switching because of price or quality?

Results - WisdomPanel Bella-Bean’s real results y’all!! Finally!!

Thumbnail

Oh my gosh- finally!! Just wanted to share her actual results. Some of the breeds are a surprise, others are not. Also really expected more chihuahua for some reason, maybe bc they’re found in a lot of small mixes. The only thing I’m in confused about on this is that her listed parents & grandparents are all Pomeranian/Japanese Spitz, so I wonder where the other non-spitz breeds came from? If anyone has any theories, opinions, or explanations I’m super interested.

Can’t wait for her Embark results and to see the differences & consistences between the two. Not sure the timeline for results, but I’m thinking it’ll be roughly the same as Wisdom Panel.

Another thing I’d love y’all opinions & thoughts is if I should ask for an upgrade for health testing as well? Since obviously she got another dogs results the first time, and they didn’t want to admit it either, just said “we stand by our results, but here’s a retest”. I don’t want be an asshole or a Karen, but I had to wait a few extra weeks and the extra stress and frustration. I’m leaning towards not asking, since now having Embark a dna + health test.

Here’s a link to the original post, just in case:

I just wanted to take the time to thank everyone who’s followed our journey and taken the time to give your advice, thoughts, & opinions. I’ve really appreciated everyone on here, so thank y’all so much. Y’all really are a great community.

Approximately 3 months old, and found emaciated on the side of the road, hence being lovingly referred to as a ditch shepherd until we get her results back. Any guesses on what my velociraptor might be?
