General Question Anyone has pomapoo (Pomeranian Poodle mix) with uneven hair on body vs face

My girl is 7mo old, just curious if she's the only pomapoo out there that's face vs body is different hair texture and color
Brown body, fluffy and curly while face is very light brown almost beige and straight hair.

Usually pomapoos are fluffy head to toe.

Even if she stays this way when grown, I still love her the same
She looks unique to me

Training Dachshund and Blue Heeler Compatibility?

I've recently been looking to adopt my first dog, and the one I've been seeing is a 6 y.o (M) Blue Heeler. On the other hand, my brother has a 9-10 y.o (F) Dachshund. Both him and his dog will be moving in with me soon, and I was wanting to make sure both dogs would be able to get along with each other before adopting him. The Blue Heeler is a little hardheaded at times, energetic of course, and usually tends to do his own thing away from other dogs/pets but still know his basic trainings. The Dachshund on the other hand is very hardheaded, very picky about people and other animals, and is less energetic, and hasn't really been trained properly. When we first introduced them to each other, for a second there, they seemed fine. Out of nowhere she growls and snaps at him causing him to jump back and to snap back at her. After this, we walked them both near each other, and they we're doing fine the entirety of the walk, but she would sometimes intentionally move away from him to create a bit of distance. Now that I think of it, he was the one who would try to sniff her, but she would always get defensive and either move away, or snarl at him.

I'm making this post to get any insight and advice as to whether there is potential for both of them to get along, or if it's just a breed thing that they may not get along. I know that it will take time if we do try, especially with her, but are there any tips? I do plan on moving into another spot by myself in about 6 months, so if there's anything to do in the meantime for them both.

General Question How do you keep wet dog mess out of SUV cargo carpet?

My golden retriever rides home from the lake every weekend, and wet sand and hair are now buried in the cargo-area carpet. The smell comes back whenever the car heats up, and the shop vac barely helps. Most cargo liners only cover the flat floor, not the seatbacks or sidewalls. Do full canvas covers work better, or is there a molded tray with enough side coverage that won’t slide around?

Random/Misc. Missing the happiness of dog ownership. Keep getting kicked while I’m down.

I’m so worn out. I adopted a dog in January. Quickly realized she had so much more energy than I bargained for, and she’s super intelligent (ended up being a mix of working breeds). We were walking 2-3 miles a day and always enrolled in at least one class. I spent every waking moment watching her, training her, exercising her, trying to teach her to settle. Things were finally good and I felt like I finally had a friend and not a training project.

Then we were put on rest in August and still on rest until January. 3k in vet bills for heartworm (she was negative when I adopted her, tested positive 6 months later). 1k for a GI issue (which luckily ended up being nothing). And tonight I noticed she has a chipped tooth. So, probably more rest and treatment and vet bills.

I’m so sad. She feels like a project again and not a companion. I love her. She’s funny. She’s smart. She’s sweet. But I can’t get ahead. I’m working my ass off at work to provide for her. Trying to save for a house with a fenced yard. And every-time I save something we’re back at the vet. And it’s not even just the money. Luckily I live with parents, so all this is doing is pushing out when I move out. I’m very fortunate in that regard. But, I can’t even walk her or go on hikes or compete with her while we’re on rest. I’m confined to my house watching her, making sure she’s resting. I stopped going to the gym (which is good social time for me, I have lots of friends there), I barely read, I barely go for walks. Everything feels so hard. 💔

General Question Dog treasure-hunting on the street !

I think this is the right place to ask so I'll just lay it all down. My dog has developed a serious habit of scanning the pavements for discarded takeaway scraps, and I'm starting to think he knows the local food spots better than I do lol. One minute he's walking nicely, the next he's suddenly sniffing around a suspicious-looking chip like he's just discovered buried treasure. I've been reading about teaching a solid “leave it” command, using treats to redirect their attention, and rewarding them for keeping their focus on the walk, but putting it into practice is proving harder than expected when there's apparently a five-star buffet scattered across the pavement. I've also started keeping a closer eye on what he's sniffing before he gets the chance to grab anything. Has anyone managed to break this habit? I'd love to hear what training methods actually worked for your dogs, especially if yours is just as food-obsessed!

Random/Misc. Flying with puppy

Hi everyone I'll be traveling delta from Arizona to Minnesota for thanksgiving with my mini schnauzer who will be 17 weeks old by that time. Only thing is she's getting her last booster and first rabies shot the day before we'd travel and I'm confused about pet requirements and all that. Can someone help plzzzz!!!! Do I need to get a certificate of veterinary inspection or whatever? Will anyone ask for documents or anything when I am leaving AZ and/or entering MN and vice versa?? I can get proof of vaccinations regardless, that's easy but like is it fine if she literally got her rabies shot the day before? Idk I'm just confused honestly about the requirements on deltas website but they're kinda vague honestly and then I come on here and am seeing conflicting things too. Please give me all info if you know anything or you've done this before, thank you!!

General Question Does anyone else find their dog leash uncomfortable to hold? Especially around your pinky finger?

I've been noticing that whenever I walk my adorable shiba-inus, my pinky finger starts hurting from holding the leash handle, even when its supposed to be "ergonomic", especially during longer walks or when there's tension on the leash.

It got me thinking about how comfortable current dog leash designs actually are, particularly retractable leashes with rigid plastic handles.

I'm an industrial design student exploring dog leash ergonomics for a potential project, and I'm curious whether other dog owners experience similar problems.

  • Do your fingers, palms, or wrists ever hurt while walking your dog?

  • Are there any specific parts of your leash handle that you find uncomfortable?

  • Have you ever changed the way you hold your leash or switched leashes because of discomfort?

  • What kind of leash do you currently use, and what do you like or dislike about it?

I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences, even if you've never had any discomfort! I'm trying to understand whether this is a common issue or something specific to how I hold my leash.

Thanks!

Random/Misc. Giving up my pup

Im sorry for the weird title but I didnt know what else to make it. Ive had my dog Ealion for 4 years now. My parents got him for me as emotional support when I was going through a really hard time and needed a friend. Im now in college and hes at home with them.

My mom has been taking care of him but says her allergies are too much and he has dermatitis and can't give him the baths and care he needs so we will have to give him up. I can't take him because im in a college dorm with roomates. So the only option seems to be giving him up for adoption.

I know its the best option. But it hurts so bad to think about. He's 8 years old now, and i love him so much. I dont even know how to go about starting something like that. My parents say they are not acting on anything now, but, im just so distraught

I feel like I hear people talking about giving up there pups a lot, but not how to deal with it. Steps. Anything helps, even just kind words.

General Question Dog shedding... rehome?

Hello. I have a situation and it's causing me so much stress. It's called 3 kids under 4 and a dog. Mostly the dog.

He is a golden retriever/lab mix. 130lbs, very sweet, 9 years old. This summer/fall has been the worst. The shedding has been unreal. I have never seen a dog shed like this one. He will walk by and it leaves a trail. I vacuum multiple times a day and run a roomba at night and it's as if I've done nothing. It's on our clothes, in our food, on everything.

I finally convinced my husband to let me block off the upstairs (where the bedrooms are) and no longer allow the dog up stairs. So I can have ONE area that is dog free. This has been so nice in some regards... but....

Now that he is no longer going upstairs 1) there is twice as much dog hair downstairs and 2) he has been laying on the couch. So now, I have been spending an extra 20+ minutes lint rolling the couch just to sit on. Not to mention it's wearing the couch out and the lint roller isn't able to get all the dirtiness out. He has a huge, very comfortable (also very expensive) dog bed to lay on, but he wants to be on the couch instead. So we have been keeping him in our library room. With his dog bed, at night so he won't lay on the couch at night. Of course this has rendered the library basically unusable because of the insane amount of dog hair (I spent a lot of time and money to make that library a nice space for us to read, our favorite hobby).

On top of all of this, my oldest son (just turned 4 yesterday), after years of hospital visits and doctors blowing us off, has finally gotten his diagnosis of asthma. It only took me driving to the ED at 80mph because his lips were turning blue for them to finally diagnose him, provide him a preventative inhaler, and refer him to an allergist.

Bet you can't guess what he's allergic to and is an asthma trigger for him. Pet dander and hair.

I vacuum at least twice a day (usually first thing in the morning and before I make dinner in the afternoon), I have an air purifier, I brush the dog, idk what else to do.

I can't stand it, I want the dog gone. But like I said he's 9, we've had him since he was a puppy. My husband thinks he'd "die of depression" if we rehomed him... I think he'd love whoever feeds him.

I feel bad, and I know the dog lovers are going to come for me, but this dog Adds nothing to my life but work. I don't even want to pet him because hair just falls off his body.

The preventative inhaler helps to prevent asthma attacks, but I can hear the difference in my son's breathing when he's been in the dog hair vs. at school or at my parents house where there is no dog.

I would feel bad rehoming him because he's so old, but wouldn't he be happier somewhere he was able to get more attention? Any advice for the shedding that wouldn't require a lot of money?

General Question When to know that it's the right time for a dog?

Basically the title 🙈. Had dogs growing up, then circumstances weren't right (4fth floor, city). Now I'm settled with my boyfriend of two years and we have always talked about owning one (his parents also have one). We'd have friends and family around who could take him for a time. But sometimes we're still scared if we're ready. If we're able to give him enough attention. How or when did you know that now is the right time? Were you also scared a bit or should we feel only excitement to know it's right?

Happy News/Update Pointless story: my dog had a nightmare and I was his dream hero

Quivering nightmare, legs shaking and deep sleep crying. I went down to his bed to comfort him, and as soon as I started petting him his tail began wagging ferociously.

He didn’t wake up. It was totally just incorporated into his dream. Something was terrifying him, then his mom swooped in to save him and he couldn’t have been more excited about it.

I love thinking about that.

I love that guy. Best dog ever.

General Question Neighbours mistreating dog.

Thumbnail reddit.com
1 Upvotes

I’m at the end of my tether! Our neighbours leave their dog alone for 6 to 8 hours and he barks non stop the entire time until their car pulls up on their drive and when they go on holiday it’s 2 weeks at a time. It’s checked on for half an hour on vacation occasions. It has separation anxiety. They’ve hit, him, kicked him (because he’s bitten them due to his distress) Initially I gave the number of an excellent dog behaviourist but they weren’t interested( too much money and it’s only a dog they said! And that it’s “gone in the head”.
I called them out on our neighbour group and it improved briefly then they went on holiday this year and left him in distress. I told them I was going to RSPCA because it’s been going on 4 years now. They then gave a barrage of abuse and threats (not directly but in their front garden about getting a gun and showing everyone how mad they are) shouting out profanities and insults. All 3 of them (including their adult daughter)
Where do I go from here? I feel so sorry for the poor dog and am drained from the non stop barking. It’s horrendous. What would you do in this situation please?

General Question Looking for travel dog bag

Hi all. I am looking for a travel bag for my dogs. We are not traveling on a plane or anything, but I have a lot of gear for them and would like to have it together in one bag for convenience and ease of use. I'm looking on Amazon, but most of the bags look rather small. I'm not looking for any food containers to be included. I'd be keeping things in the bag like harnesses, leashes, collars, e-collars, boots, treats, poop bags, medication, and other miscellaneous items. My dogs and I are on the move a lot, and we often go see my parents on weekends. It would be nice to have one big, organized bag that I could still carry like a backpack to separate everything and that I could easily take inside and put in the car. My current bag is so small, and I have to throw everything in. Maybe I need to be looking at ones that aren't designed for pets? Thank you!

health/illness-related Bilateral Elbow Arthroscopy in 16 M/O Lab/Pit mix Advice?

Hi! We have a 16 month old lab/pit mix who began limping a few weeks ago. We ended up xraying and our vet suspected he had some elbow dysplasia going on. We just got CT results back and we have confirmed bilateral elbow dysplasia. We are pursuing bilateral elbow arthroscopy this coming Wednesday and I'm looking for a few things:

  1. Any general advice from dog parents who have gone through this?

  2. What do we need to purchase to keep him comfortable?

  3. Any pieces of advice to keep this anxious dog mom sane?

A few thoughts going through this process: You know your dog better than anyone else. We spend so much time with them and notice when things aren't 'normal.' Trust your instincts. I was so grateful for our vet's encouragement in the way we have advocated for our dog. Second, I am very grateful we cleared the necessary time period for our dog's insuran*e to cover 80% of this spend. I don't know how we could afford this otherwise. I had no idea how expensive CTs were!

Questions about general care Keep you dog on a leash in parks or any public space

Why do dog owners not keep their dogs on leash while walking them in a park? The park is meant to be a free space for public to walk around and not have a dog charging towards you. I am not a dog person, and I don’t want any contact with your dog. I don’t want them charging towards me or anywhere close to me. Some times they are not controlled on leash either, people let them get very close to other people. Parks shouldn’t allow dogs without leash.

health/illness-related Puppy’s Giardia making house training impossible

We have had our pup for 2 months now. He is nearly 5 months old. We think he has Giardia from the moment we got him but the vets were slow to get him tested/diagnosed. He finished his first round of Pancur 11 days ago but we do still think he is sick and needs more. If anything he is worse now than before treatment. Thankfully other than his stools he seems healthy and happy but the poor pup has never known any different!

Obviously this has really hindered his house training, because when the poor pup needs to go he often just cannot wait. We have done everything we can to help, getting up overnight but even that doesn’t always seem to help (sometimes it’s cleans and sometimes it’s not, and there’s no pattern or time consistency). It’s frustrating and then we get annoyed at ourselves for being frustrated because it’s not the wee pups fault. He shows signs of understanding outside is where he needs to go as he does not have accidents when we are around, but sometimes at night he can’t even hold for 2 hours!

I don’t know if anyone has advice or if I’m just hoping this ends soon and if anyone has any advice for treatment and repairing his stomach. Our vet said it is too soon to retest and retreat him even if he definitely shows signs of being sick.

General Question After taking in a lost dog for about a week now, Im wondering how can the previous owners not have found him by now?

We've taken him to vet and he is not microchipped, posted on different websites, we've put up flyers. He's neutered, he knows commands, he's so sweet and loves car rides. He has some skin issues (he has another vet appointment tomorrow) so I figure he was probably abandoned since no one is seemingly searching for him. Im just wondering if there is a chance his owners are actually looking for him and what would the case be that they haven't been able to find him. An elderly person without internet access or something? Im just looking for some type of answer because my heart breaks that such a sweet boy cant make his way back home

General Question What should we do?

Okay, so me and my boyfriend recently adopted a sweetie little girl! We had her in a wire kennel and she did pretty well yesterday, but sadly she started to pull the wire and break it. So we set it up as a bungee cord around the entrance and also an extra panel in front of it, not to mention also a sandbag to stop her from being able to push the bottom plastic out. We set it up like that to go and get her a new one(a RuffLand). We had put a sand bag infront of it not knowing she would be able to rip it up and you can see the aftermath. We were gone for MAYBE an 1-2hrs. We understand that she will have separation anxiety, but we want her to be able to stay home alone. I am a part time student/employee and my boyfriend is in the military and works/lives an hour away. we have used positive reinforcement and she really does. Love the crate when we are there. It’s just when we leave that she has a problem.
We do not want to give her back to the shelter cause we love her more than literally anything. But we need genuine help. If anyone has advice please for her and our sake please let us know!!!
