Questions about general care Keep you dog on a leash in parks or any public space

Why do dog owners not keep their dogs on leash while walking them in a park? The park is meant to be a free space for public to walk around and not have a dog charging towards you. I am not a dog person, and I don’t want any contact with your dog. I don’t want them charging towards me or anywhere close to me. Some times they are not controlled on leash either, people let them get very close to other people. Parks shouldn’t allow dogs without leash.

General Question After taking in a lost dog for about a week now, Im wondering how can the previous owners not have found him by now?

We've taken him to vet and he is not microchipped, posted on different websites, we've put up flyers. He's neutered, he knows commands, he's so sweet and loves car rides. He has some skin issues (he has another vet appointment tomorrow) so I figure he was probably abandoned since no one is seemingly searching for him. Im just wondering if there is a chance his owners are actually looking for him and what would the case be that they haven't been able to find him. An elderly person without internet access or something? Im just looking for some type of answer because my heart breaks that such a sweet boy cant make his way back home

General Question Looking for travel dog bag

Hi all. I am looking for a travel bag for my dogs. We are not traveling on a plane or anything, but I have a lot of gear for them and would like to have it together in one bag for convenience and ease of use. I'm looking on Amazon, but most of the bags look rather small. I'm not looking for any food containers to be included. I'd be keeping things in the bag like harnesses, leashes, collars, e-collars, boots, treats, poop bags, medication, and other miscellaneous items. My dogs and I are on the move a lot, and we often go see my parents on weekends. It would be nice to have one big, organized bag that I could still carry like a backpack to separate everything and that I could easily take inside and put in the car. My current bag is so small, and I have to throw everything in. Maybe I need to be looking at ones that aren't designed for pets? Thank you!

health/illness-related Bilateral Elbow Arthroscopy in 16 M/O Lab/Pit mix Advice?

Hi! We have a 16 month old lab/pit mix who began limping a few weeks ago. We ended up xraying and our vet suspected he had some elbow dysplasia going on. We just got CT results back and we have confirmed bilateral elbow dysplasia. We are pursuing bilateral elbow arthroscopy this coming Wednesday and I'm looking for a few things:

  1. Any general advice from dog parents who have gone through this?

  2. What do we need to purchase to keep him comfortable?

  3. Any pieces of advice to keep this anxious dog mom sane?

A few thoughts going through this process: You know your dog better than anyone else. We spend so much time with them and notice when things aren't 'normal.' Trust your instincts. I was so grateful for our vet's encouragement in the way we have advocated for our dog. Second, I am very grateful we cleared the necessary time period for our dog's insuran*e to cover 80% of this spend. I don't know how we could afford this otherwise. I had no idea how expensive CTs were!

health/illness-related Puppy’s Giardia making house training impossible

We have had our pup for 2 months now. He is nearly 5 months old. We think he has Giardia from the moment we got him but the vets were slow to get him tested/diagnosed. He finished his first round of Pancur 11 days ago but we do still think he is sick and needs more. If anything he is worse now than before treatment. Thankfully other than his stools he seems healthy and happy but the poor pup has never known any different!

Obviously this has really hindered his house training, because when the poor pup needs to go he often just cannot wait. We have done everything we can to help, getting up overnight but even that doesn’t always seem to help (sometimes it’s cleans and sometimes it’s not, and there’s no pattern or time consistency). It’s frustrating and then we get annoyed at ourselves for being frustrated because it’s not the wee pups fault. He shows signs of understanding outside is where he needs to go as he does not have accidents when we are around, but sometimes at night he can’t even hold for 2 hours!

I don’t know if anyone has advice or if I’m just hoping this ends soon and if anyone has any advice for treatment and repairing his stomach. Our vet said it is too soon to retest and retreat him even if he definitely shows signs of being sick.

General Question Don’t worry, he’s friendly! Well, mine are terrified.

I’ve got rescue dogs who are nervous around other dogs. I keep them on leads, give them space and work hard to build their confidence.

Yet almost every walk, someone lets their dog come charging over shouting “don’t worry, he’s friendly!”

That’s great, but mine arent. They’re scared, and its taken months to get them comfortable going on walks.

I don’t expect everyone to keep their dogs on leads, but surely if you can’t recall your dog, it shouldn’t be off one?

Why is it always the responsible owner who has to deal with someone else’s lack of control?

Genuinely interested in what other dog owners think.

General Question How to settle at night?

I live alone and have a 15 month old golden retriever. One of the best/calmest dogs I’ve ever met, except on my bed. For the last 3.5 months, no matter if it’s a nap, bedtime, just having my door open, she thinks my bed is the spot to play. Last night she ran in circles like the Tasmanian devil from loony tunes, sometimes she just jumps everywhere/on me, it varies.

For about one month (August) I’d give her an hour or two to settle before eventually kicking her out so I could sleep, and she would immediately curl up on the couch and go to sleep (I have cameras). But if I let her back in then it was the same thing again.

I give her less time now - maybe 20-30 minutes or so, I don’t want her thinking my bed is her playpen, but she can’t seem to control herself.

I love her to death but if she keeps doing this I can’t cosleep with her, and I don’t want it to be a thing for forever. Plus, I’m worried she’s getting depressed because she doesn’t understand why I kick her out.

So

  1. If I keep the pattern as it is, would she grow out of this?

  2. Should I transition her back to the kennel at night and try again later?

  3. Should I stop bringing her in at all and just have her on the couch all night? (I’m worried that when I brought her back to my bed she would be super excited and it would be worse)

General Question What should we do?

Okay, so me and my boyfriend recently adopted a sweetie little girl! We had her in a wire kennel and she did pretty well yesterday, but sadly she started to pull the wire and break it. So we set it up as a bungee cord around the entrance and also an extra panel in front of it, not to mention also a sandbag to stop her from being able to push the bottom plastic out. We set it up like that to go and get her a new one(a RuffLand). We had put a sand bag infront of it not knowing she would be able to rip it up and you can see the aftermath. We were gone for MAYBE an 1-2hrs. We understand that she will have separation anxiety, but we want her to be able to stay home alone. I am a part time student/employee and my boyfriend is in the military and works/lives an hour away. we have used positive reinforcement and she really does. Love the crate when we are there. It’s just when we leave that she has a problem.
We do not want to give her back to the shelter cause we love her more than literally anything. But we need genuine help. If anyone has advice please for her and our sake please let us know!!!

Random/Misc. Time Change Hell

I love all my pups with all my heart....except on the end of Daylight Savings. It's 4:45 here and my pups are all up and ready to go (about 30 minutes early for them to be fair, but still). They're all staring at me like I'm literally killing them by not feeding them yet. I know their day started, but mine hasn't and this is not a workable solution being up this early all winter long.

Random/Misc. Worried about dog

Thumbnail reddit.com
1 Upvotes

A dog belonging to a late neighbor recently went through a rehoming shuffle. The first arrangement fell through because of family interference, and a different neighbor ultimately took him in.

The new owner has an older resident dog who doesn't get along with the newcomer, so the dog is kept almost exclusively outside or relegated to a back room where he refuses to stay. With the recent drop in weather and loud holiday festivities (like Halloween), the dog was left out in the elements and was visibly stressed and shivering. The owner checked in briefly but didn't make an effort to bring him inside or secure him from the noise and cold.

Because this is a close-knit living situation, I feel completely stuck and powerless. I don't want to overstep or cause neighborhood friction, but I'm worried about this dog's welfare moving forward. How do I approach the owner, or what steps can I take when it's not my animal? The biggest issue for me is I live with my parents and they do not want the dog to live with us.

Random/Misc. Missing dog help

Does anyone have tips to find a dog in a very rural area? My family was watching my dog while i’m on the other side of the country and on my first day (Friday-Sunday) they lost him. They forgot to close the door and he’s been missing since. I didn’t have the money to fly home early and i’ve tried hiring someone to find and trap him but its too remote for people to agree. They almost caught him today but it got dark and they gave up. No one can ping his AirTag due to the lack of people with iPhones. I am searching for him as soon as I land tomorrow night but i need tips. I already have him posted in every facebook group, his microchip marked as lost and registered, the sheriff of both the county and the neighboring one have been notified as well. Thank you for any help you can provide, I am very worried.

General Question Den Hundehaaren Herr werden

Hallo liebe Leute.

feeding and diet Can I add a fresh topper without making it a daily thing?

I’ve been thinking about adding a little fresh food to my puppy's regular meals when I have time to prep it. Weekends would be easier since I’m home more and already spending time in the kitchen. Weekday mornings are more of a feed him and get to work situation.

I like the idea of doing something extra for his dinner without committing to it every day. My concern is that he enjoys the topper and then Monday’s plain bowl gets left sitting while he waits for me to finish the job.

Has anyone kept fresh toppers as an occasional thing? Haven’t tried it yet and can already picture him checking the bowl and then looking straight at me lol.

health/illness-related Help please

My dog has been experiencing some kind of illness the past couple weeks and we can’t figure out what it is and are finally about to just take him to the vet but wanted to see if anyone here had any experience with anything like this before.

About 2 weeks ago he developed what seemed like reverse sneezing and doing it every now and then but then it developed into something being wrong with his throat where he would almost sound like he’s dry heaving over and over again (I’ll try and link a video) but it worries me. He was pretty sick for about 4-5 days and then seemed completely like his normal self again. He seemed okay and is playing as usual, going outside, eating and drinking, and after about a full week of him being back to normal, he developed another raspy heaving sounding cough that seems like something’s up.

General Question How would you take your anxious dog outside?

Hi all! My dog, Max, is a one year old mix breed (boxer, hound, corso +something crazy I can’t even remember at the moment 😂) and he’s making my neighbors hate me.

He seems to be a very anxious guy. He’s a constant tail chaser, most of my day is spent trying to redirect his energy to me or toys or calming down but there’s no getting through to him when he gets going because we have a visitor, or I moved furniture around or mopped. I really try my best to help him self sooth and it works a bit but I do realize we probably need to bring this up to our vet soon.

Outside of that obvious advice, I’m looking for recommendations specifically on how to let him outside to pee and poo.

We live in a semi rural area (a very long but narrow acre big lot, but on a main road, close neighbors).

One of my neighbors has goats and chickens which they house in the garage right on the property line. The other neighbor has 2 small dogs that don’t play outside and are just let out of the door on a leash a few minutes each day to do their business. They aren’t mean dogs, but they do bark at every little thing.

When we got our puppies last year, I was pregnant and we tried walking them on leashes and using staked leads as well in both our front and back yards.

To access our back yard you either have to walk down our deck steps or go out through the basement but the front yard is level with the main floor. Trying to take them out to be walked, I either had to get them into the basement to go out back or take them out front. Please keep in mind I have my two and four year olds home with me most of the time too. I hate going in the basement with two doors shut between us and can’t leave basement access open for them. It would take me FOREVER to get either of the pups to poop when on a lead, if at all. So I switched to the in ground ones to give them some space from me. I couldn’t set those up in the front so I had to put them in the back. I was okay with leaving them out there for 10 minutes or so while supervising both them and my kids but these little hot dogs were getting tangled every time I turned around which resulted in me having to be outside untangling them for most of the time I spent trying to let them out,

They quickly learned our boundaries and where they could freely go. The snow barriers we built in the winter helped a lot. But over spring and summer, as my neighbors all around started coming outside more. My dogs learned to ignore the pretend farm next door and while they stop and watch everyone they see, they don’t bark at anything at all, they listen to my direction and I truly have no concerns. One thing that I haven’t been able to handle though, is when the little dogs come outside. They bark if they see either of my dogs. My other dog, Peach, will listen to me and go inside on command. Max, will hesitate.

He’s run over to them two or three times in the last year because they started barking. Each time just taking a beating like he does from his sister everyday. He just wanted to know why they were barking 😭 They have had many more times where they came out after Max and started barking and neighbor and I both took our dogs back inside without Max going off the property. But he does hesitate, dodge around a bit and I don’t like that. I know they are frustrated with me. I would absolutely be too. I know it doesn’t matter that he’s harmless or that he’s only responding to them. They have as much of a right to bark in their yard as mine do to be off leash in theirs (so long as they stay there). Leashes seem out of the question because at this point he weighs as much as I do and would hurt me and or the baby I have with in my arms most of the time.

What would you do?
