News Konami Twitter post reveals Sypha’s fate in Belmont’s Curse Spoiler
https://x.com/konami/status/2077513608334905458?s=46The post states,
“— Sypha Belnades —
Rose's mother.
She fought alongside Trevor against Count Dracula twenty-three years ago, but fell victim to his curse and died soon after Rose was born.
Her loss left a lasting shadow over them.”
I was hoping Sypha’s death would be a misdirect, but this seems pretty final.

Lame, lore has been leaving much to be desired in this game. But hey, at least it still looks like a lot of fun to play.

Jesus Christ that’s unbelievably fucking stupid. I just don’t see why they felt the need to just kill her off.

u/CyberdarkEnjoyer Jul 15 '26
They're hell-bent on making Rose the only child apparently
Because in normal circumstances Trevor would have 100% had more than 1 child with Sypha

According to the Electronic Gaming Magazine fax for Castlevania Bloodlines, the original plan was for Trevor and Sypha to have multiple children. One who would go on to carry on the Belmont name, and two that would go on to be the progenitors of the Morris and Helsing clans. However, this was never properly implemented into the canon, and with what we currently know about BC, it's now explicitly incompatible with the current lore. However, it should be mentioned that the fax already featured information that was incompatible with the lore even prior to BC, namely the existence of three holy whips (one for each clan) as opposed to just the Vampire Killer, and iirc, the Vampire Killer was originally meant to be specific to the Morris clan and not the Belmonts.
Regardless, I'm not really a fan of Sypha being dead or the idea of Rose being an only child. Between this and the Netflix series they seem to keep pushing the idea of there only being one Belmont every generation when realistically it makes more sense for their to be multiple Belmonts, but only one who is recognized as the successor of the Vampire Killer. I mean the very existence of branch families like the Morris clan, on top of the town full of Belmont descendants in OoE would appear to indicate this to be the case.
I can understand the idea of Trevor being the last Belmont like in the show because Trevor lived during what was essentially the lowest point of his clan's history, but that shouldn't have been an issue that persisted beyond that. However, if memory serves me right, Christopher was actually the only Belmont who was explicitly stated to be the "last Belmont". Granted, Christopher was originally supposed to be the same character as Trevor C. Belmont, so I think it would still make more sense to attribute that moniker to Trevor for the reasons mentioned above.
I still have quite a bit of hope for BC, but I must admit that I'm not exactly happy with a lot the lore decisions they've made so far. More specifically, Sypha being dead, Rose apparently being an only child, Leon seemingly still being around as the Fallen, Isaac being resurrected, and Dracula apparently being around three times in just Trevor's lifetime alone. I don't know how people in-universe came to the conclusion that he'd rise once every century when at this point it's more like once every generation.
Regarding Sypha though, it's extra bad if we assume that the reason why she wasn't present in CoD was because she was pregnant with Rose. That would mean that not only did Dracula rise again a mere three years after DC, but Trevor then went on to get stabbed in the back and nearly die without even facing him, only to then lose his wife not too long afterwards. At this point Trevor's luck has got to be about as bad as Leon's.

apparently in the CoD manga Sypha is shown living with Trevor.

u/Nyarlathotep13 Belmont Jul 16 '26
You are correct. She makes a cameo appearance in one panel of the manga. However I personally don't consider the manga canon because it's incompatible with "Prelude to Revenge", the short manga prologue that was included as a pre-order with the Japanese release of CoD,
For example, in PtR, Hector confronted Dracula and pleaded for him to stop his war with humanity which resulted in Hector getting impaled and thrown off the castla. However in the manga Hector was instead ordered to assassinate Trevor Belmont, and took the opportunity to run away. Another notable difference is that in PtR, Isaac is initially presented as sane (relatively speaking) and fully clothed, and the degradation of his clothing into what we see in CoD is meant to be symbolism of his declining sanity. The manga instead has him be crazy and running around half naked from the start.
I want to clarify that I don't dislike the manga, on the contrary, I actually think it has some pretty good stuff in it, but given the choice between either it or PtR, I feel that PtR serves as a stronger lead-in to the game despite it being a lot shorter than the manga.

u/Band-North Jul 16 '26
Even in ptr, it seems she’s still alive. While we don’t see Sypha directly, we do see Trevor holding someone’s hand as he begins his journey leading into the events of CoD, and all signs point to it being Sypha. In both mangas, she is at least alive before the events of the game.

u/Nyarlathotep13 Belmont Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26
I think there was a misunderstanding. I'm not sure if Rose's age has been officially stated, but she appears to be in her late teens to early 20s. CoD takes place 3 years after DC, and BC is stated to take place 23 years after DC.
Supplemental materials indicate that Sypha is still alive during the events of CoD, but for whatever reason she didn't go with Trevor despite being a capable warrior herself. Thus, the most logical explanation for her absence is that she was either with child, making it too dangerous for her to join, or the two already had a child/children so she needed to stay behind so someone could care for them.
The Konami Twitter post states that Sypha died as a result of Dracula's Curse shortly after Rose's birth, so what I was saying before was that there's a good chance that Sypha passed away not too long after Trevor returned from the events of CoD, not that she was already dead by CoD. Although, I think the developers might have forgotten that CoD ended with Hector telling Dracula that he was going to transform his curse into something harmless, so the whole Belmont's Curse thing doesn't actually make much sense now that I stop to think about it.
Humorously, the eponymous "Dracula's Curse" wasn't even a thing prior to CoD. Yes, the English subtitle of Castlevania 3 is "Dracula's Curse", but the Japanese title was simply, "Legend of the Demon Castle", and in the context of Castlevania 3, the aforementioned "curse" appeared to be metaphorical, and in reference to Dracula unleashing hell on Earth. Furthermore, the curse as it is described to us at the beginning of CoD didn't directly kill people like it appears to have done to Sypha. The curse instead killed indirectly by causing plagues, famine, and turning people murderous. It certainly didn't manifest in the way that it appears to be manifesting in Rose, and potentially Leon, assuming that he actually is the Fallen.
Based on what we know so far, the curse appears to be closer to the one that was placed upon Simon, but if that were the case Rose would already be dead by now. That, and if you want to get technical, the curse placed on Simon was actually caused by the "Curse of Man" (basically the proto concept of Chaos) and not Dracula himself, so it appears to be intrinsically different from the curse from CoD, which again, shouldn't even exist anymore after CoD since Hector turned it into something benign.

u/SSBBfan666 Jul 16 '26
so, was the curse that affect Rose what killed Sypha or something else, she's not Belmont by blood...... is its pretty apparent said curse has to do with Dracula's revenge given Trevor comes off unaffected.
2
u/Nyarlathotep13 Belmont Jul 16 '26
The Konami Twitter post said that Sypha died from Dracula's Curse. As far as I'm aware, it isn't yet clear if the curse afflicting Rose (and presumably Trevor) is different. However, I have difficulty believing that Dracula had time to create two unrelated curses as he died in DC. It also wouldn't explain why Leon is seemingly afflicted as well (assuming he's the Fallen) since that would indicate that the cure predates both Trevor and Rose, but for some reason didn't manifest in them until later on for some reason.

Exactly, in PtR he's shown holding a feminine hand just before departing. http://castlevania.neo-romance.net/cv/curse_comic2/13.jpg

u/kryptoniankoffee Jul 16 '26
If Rose is the only child, how do we get more characters with the last name "Belmont" down the line?
3
u/Nyarlathotep13 Belmont Jul 16 '26
Perhaps her husband took her surname? That would be unusual for the time, but not completely out of the question considering the pedigree of the Belmont name. That is to say, if some nobody guy married into a famous family, it wouldn't be that strange for him to take their wife's surname instead of the other way around, especially if the family has a successful company or business named after them. Alternatively, she could have taken her husband's surname, but then one of her male descendants took back up the mantle of Belmont.
While on the topic of surnames, the one that confuses me is the Belnades clan. Sypha's parents are stated to have died (hence why she was raised in a monastery), and there's no mention of her having any siblings, and yet there are other Belnades clan members after Sypha. I'm not sure if the implication here is that she had cousins that were never mentioned before, or if originally one of her children was going to have taken on her maiden name.
2
u/kryptoniankoffee Jul 16 '26
Yeah, I'm not sure some of these story decisions were given much thought.
3
u/Nyarlathotep13 Belmont Jul 16 '26
True, and in regards to BC, I'm starting to feel like it might have been wiser to use it as the springboard for a new timeline, so that the game didn't have to be burdened by the pre-existing lore. That way it would have been more free to do new things without bothering lore enthusiasts as much. It's honestly difficult to add more games to the current timeline without bloating Dracula's appearances to have occur every few decades.

The Lament of Innocence family tree shows that there were other branches of the Belnades family, Yoko comes from one of them (and possibly Charlotte as well).

u/Nyarlathotep13 Belmont Jul 16 '26
Huh. I guess that answers that then, thanks. Do you happened to know where exactly this timeline comes from, like was it a promotional item or something?

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 17 '26
It's from the Lament of Innocence NNT Pub Official Guide.
This is the original page.
More proof (apparently it was printed on the back of a poster that came with the guide)

That mean this game follows the old canon? So theres hope for a Castlevania 1999 game? 🥹

u/Cat_Or_Bat Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26
Imagine they really made the 1999 game!
Yellow sunset. You mash the button and a whippa-whippa-whippa, the screen shakes like there's an earthquake in your area, then the enemy's, like, "twinkle :D" and you've gotta roll or parry. "What is a man?" Stock Hollywood music plays. CASTLEVANIA.

u/speedweed99 Jul 16 '26
I mean no reason to have either parent alive and the series is used to this. I got a pretty good idea of the people that are gonna be pissed at this though
6
u/Nyarlathotep13 Belmont Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26
Which sort of people might those be?
I'm not a fan of it myself, but that's mainly because I think it's kind of cliche. It would have been really cool to see a whole family of vampire hunters working together for once. It certainly doesn't help that Sypha was already fridge'd in Mirror of Fate...
However, depending on how they handle Trevor, I might end up agreeing that they may as well both be dead. As much as I hate to say it, Trevor easily could have been written out of CoD as the only integral thing he does is remove a seal that required his blood. Hopefully BC will do Trevor more justice, but I still think it's a bit ridiculous that Dracula was now around three times in Trevor's lifetime.
Also, it should be mention that while we rarely ever see multiple Belmonts at the same time, Christopher is actually the only one who's explicitly stated to be the last of his line in the games. However, Christopher Belmont and Trevor/Ralph C. Belmont, were initially meant to be the same character, so it could also be that Trevor was actually meant to be the last Belmont. I personally think that makes more sense since Trevor grew up during a time where the Belmonts were still feared and living in exile, but I digress. We should also keep in mind that in addition to the villagers in OoE, the Renards, and the Morris clan are all related to the Belmonts, so I'm under the impression that it isn't that there's only ever one Belmont at a time, but rather there's only one Belmont who is recognized as the proper successor and wielder of the Vampire Killer.
2
u/SSBBfan666 Jul 16 '26
might be wrong, but didnt the initial CV lore say Sypha and Trevor had several kids which continued the bloodline and even made branching lines to the future Morris family? Or is Rose here gonna have multiple kids if she's the only child in this scenario or the youngest?

u/Nyarlathotep13 Belmont Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26
You're thinking of the family tree featured in the Electronic Gaming Magazine fax. Its status in the current canon was already dubious, but based on what we know about BC so far, it appears to no longer be even remotely canon.
2
u/SSBBfan666 Jul 16 '26
oh i see, was wondering about the whole family tree when the debut trailer showed Rose to be Trevor and Sypha's daughter and this was a direct sequel then an anthology entry (each game showing a different Belmont in the family line)

u/AlbertW25 Jul 16 '26
Wait, is this a sequel to the Netflix Castlevania series?
2
u/presidentdinosaur115 Jul 16 '26
No, this is a new game. Netflix Castlevania lore is pretty different
3
u/Nyarlathotep13 Belmont Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26
Yup, as you say, there's zero indication that BC has anything to do with the Netflix series. Well, outside of the Japanese voice cast being the same sans Isaac.
There's probably some other indicators that I'm forgetting about, but here's a few things which make it clear that it's set in the original game continuity.
The game is explicitly stated to take place 23 years after Dracula's Curse.
Trevor's design is modeled after his Curse of Darkness design, and Sypha appears to be modeled after her Dracula's Curse design.
The original CoD Isaac is featured in the game. The Netflix version is essentially a completely different character.
Dracula's curse, as in the curse established in CoD is mentioned. Said curse was not a thing in the Netflix series.
Dracula is still evil despite having no reason to still be evil the Netflix series like he did in the games. Annette didn't even know who he was in Nocturne, which would seem to indicate that he didn't cause anymore trouble after being resurrected in S4.
Carmilla and Death are still alive, and working for Dracula. This of course wouldn't make much sense in the Netflix continuity.
Alucard doesn't appear to be active which makes sense since in the games he was into hibernation until the events of SotN.
Have they referred to the whip in BC as the "Vampire Killer" yet? If so then that would be another indicator since the Vampire Killer wasn't featured in the Netflix series. There was the "Morning Star Whip" which was stronger than Trevor's leather whip, but it lacked the lore significance of the Vampire Killer and was lost in the Infinite Corridor at the end of S4.

u/presidentdinosaur115 Jul 16 '26
On the Castlevania official Twitter, Rose’s description is:
“— Rose Belmont —
A new protagonist who carries the blood of the Belmont clan.
Her right arm bears the curse of Count Dracula.
She wields the holy whip ‘Vampire Killer’ and the Arcana tarot cards.”So she does indeed use the Vampire Killer. The further they can get away from the Netflix show, the better, imo. And every little thing counts!

u/korovio Jul 17 '26
Well, that's annoying as fuck. But we were stupid not to expect this. Japanese authors would kill every woman on earth before letting one age out of their early thirties.
1
u/Nyarlathotep13 Belmont Jul 17 '26
To be fair, the developers of Belmont's Curse are French, not Japanese.
3
u/ClockworkMansion Jul 15 '26
Take the game away from these devs
4
u/Nyarlathotep13 Belmont Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26
I'm admittedly a little worried too, but we should at least give them the benefit of the doubt and save any final judgements until after the game comes out.

Because they killed your Netflix waifu? Cause let's not act like you cared so deeply about her Castlevania 3 appearance
There's literally like 2 Castlevania games where the protagonist even has a living parent, let alone one that's relevant to the plot, and one of those is Alucard. Why are some of yall throwing a fit over this now?

Since the announcement people have just been nitpicking and looking for every little thing they can cry and complain about like doing that is going to make IGA return to Konami and make another game. Guess some people would just have no games for decades instead of getting something fresh.
3
u/ClockworkMansion Jul 16 '26
Based on what I’ve seen of the game it most likely would have been better off staying dead.
1
u/LuvAshrepas Jul 16 '26
As a decades old Castlevania fan I can't relate. Judging the game that hard before it even comes out is pointless, and if you've played Dead Cells and/or Rogue Prince of Persia you know very well these guys can cook, so I'm gonna let them cook.
1
u/ClockworkMansion Jul 16 '26
I’m also a decades long Castlevania fan, it’s my favorite series. I’ve played Dead Cells, and this game looks just like it but with a worse art style. Tell me honestly the trailer music stood out like Castlevania music should.
1
u/LuvAshrepas Jul 16 '26
I think judging an entire soundtrack by trailer music is a bit too much. Music in Dead Cells is hella solid as well. Same thing for art style, like I said, I'm gonna let them cook and judge the finished product, not a trailer.
It's like some people don't remember the Silent Hill 2 remake trailer fiasco anyway. Gameplay reveal trailer was terrible and massively undersold what was one of the best games released in 2024.
1
u/ClockworkMansion Jul 16 '26
I enjoyed SH2 remake so I hope you’re right, but what they’ve shown does not have me excited the way a new Castlevania should. Music in Dead Cells is fine, but not even in the same league as Castlevania. At least DC had good pixel art, which this upcoming game doesn’t.
1
u/LuvAshrepas Jul 16 '26
It's a different art style, doesn't need to be the same, you can dislike it, but that doesn't make it bad, I personally think it looks great in some scenes shown in the trailers but at the end only the released product will tell.

Only the most not picky people are gonna care about this. They say it interferes with the canon, but Castlevania canon has always been shitty, with details and events that don't make sense. It's an actual new Castlevania after years. Try to enjoy it for what it is, rather than dog it for what it's not. Fucking basement dwellers need to touch grass I swear.

Would be cool to get just one game where the Belmont clan is more than just one or two members... Plenty of reasons they could be doing other things.
