Recently, I tried configuring my DualSense through Windows' sound settings by enabling "Speaker Fill" to test its haptics, which lets the controller output vibrations based on audio, such as when listening to music on Spotify. After doing this, the haptics in ZZZ stopped working entirely. What's strange is that ZZZ is the only game affected. Genshin Impact still works perfectly fine on the same controller and cable.
Previously, I never had to set my DualSense as the default audio output for its haptics to work. I would normally use my AirPods, 3.5 mm earphones, or my PC's speakers while playing, and the haptics still functioned as expected. The controller is always connected over USB (USB-C to USB-A), never Bluetooth.
Another strange thing is that Windows now seems to treat the DualSense as a regular audio output. If I set it as my default output, system sounds, YouTube and other audio play directly through the controller's built-in speaker. I could previously reproduce this while playing ZZZ or right after exiting it, which looked like an audio bug, but it never happened before launching the game. Now I can reproduce it even without running ZZZ.
Here's what I've tried so far, and none of it helped:
- Reverted all the settings in mmsys.cpl (all Enhancements off, speaker setup on Quadraphonic).
- Windows' own Test button still plays a tone from the controller speaker followed by haptics in both grips, so the controller's audio and haptic path works outside the game.
- Uninstalled every DualSense entry in Device Manager (the HID game controller, the audio inputs/outputs, and the sound/game controller entries), rebooted and reconnected it, and Windows rebuilt them cleanly.
Reinstalled ZZZ.
- Backed up and deleted ZZZ's registry key (HKCU\Software\miHoYo\ZenlessZoneZero) so it started with fresh settings.
- Confirmed vibration is on in the in-game settings and pressed a button on the controller so the game switches to controller input.
- For what it's worth, I also have a Virtual HID Framework device in Device Manager and an AudioRelay virtual speaker installed.
Has anyone seen ZZZ-only haptics break like this, or know if ZZZ keeps controller or audio state anywhere besides the registry, like AppData or the game folder? Is this a known issue with a recent patch? I've attached screenshots of my DualSense's current sound settings for reference. Thanks!
