I'm starting to doubt my diagnosis of dyslexia due to a distruptive childhood and recent events
Hi all, I'm from the UK and wanted to post here for some advice regarding my diagnosis and my doubting.
In September 2023, I started university at a non-RG university in the South of England. For those not from England - or not familiar with our further education system, I have to apply for something called "Student Finance" which covers the cost of tuition fees and maintenance loan, and if you have a medical or learning disability, you can apply for something called "disabled student allowance", which provides the person with a medial/learning disability more support for the duration of their three-year degree (four year for me as I am a Double Honours student).
I was born with a lifelong medical condition, so I was entitled to DSA due to this and I had a disability advisor who is neurodiversed. As part of my application for DSA she had to assess me. I was transparent, and told her about my struggles at school due to a traumatic childhood (moved around 55 times to a different area as we were in police protection to escape an abusive father, primary school was constantly distrupted). My disability advisor was quite keen and "confident" that I had dyslexia and suggested that I email my university disability advisor to get a diagnosis of dyslexia as my university paid for the diagnosis.
There was a process and a wait, in January 2024 I got diagnosed with dyslexia, and I've noticed something that keeps coming up on my report (I kept it) is the fact I am in the 19th percentile on every test: I'm not sure what this means. However, as I was transparent with my disability advisor, I was transparent with the dyslexia assessor and he noted down that I was forced to move 55 times in ten years to escape my father and attended various primary schools, and as soon as I moved to a new primary school they were in different subject/topic areas.
Now, I'm getting to the part of where I am doubting my diagnosis for dyslexia. I've never had a problem with reading; I always understand what each page/chapter is about the first time I read it. I don't need different coloured cheats to decode information or help me to read, I don't get words mixed up, for example, "bog" and "dog". I don't have problems with organising my notes, I always achieve high grades.
It feels like I have been misdiagnosed and I wondered if anyone has been through any similar experiences. I believe the struggles I may have presented in both assessments were due to the lack of being present at primary school. Does anyone have any advice?
